I used to be a cable jointer, to fit an earth wire to the cable, the best way is to strip back both steel tape armours, clean off the bituminous impregnated paper off the lead sheath. You then tie the earth wire to the sheath and using a blow torch and D metal you plumb the earth wire to the lead sheath and the other end goes into an earth block. Another method was to change the iron clad cut out for a new plastic modern one and the earth wire then went into the earth block connector on the new cut out. We used to strip these cables live by cutting off the lead sheath and then getting to the cores that were only covered in paper tape.

I agree. Not a risk I'd take. That said, a pal of mine who works for the board did the same thing as a temporary fix for me years ago. Shaved off a bit of the lead sheath & replaced the clamp that was on there for a braided TNS connection. Thing is, he'd worked for the board for many years & was qualified to work on it. I've since paid to have the meter relocated outside & they put in a TN-C-S earth. I do not recommend anyone tries this fix, even as a temporary measure!

As a former elektricien in the Netherlands i am looking at this with amazement!What a mess under the floor!That would not be in the most off the houses in the Netherlands!Just a few cables here and there and under the floor and that is it really! In our houses there is already so long ago decided to use metallic pipes first and later on plastic pipes to get the wires through.Because its tidy and better for the wires.And if some idiote goes mess up with the wires they are easy to find,unless when they are disappearing in the wall. So if there is a trouble with the wiring you can relatively put the new wires on the old ones and it just a matter off puling the wires through until you see the connection with the new wire.And then its correctly again and reliable too. So if there is something above the cellar not right you know you dont really have to check under the floor.

As a retired sparks of 50 years I have the exact same consumer unit in my house ,its a split board and the 2 rcds and mcbs come with the board ,the problem comes when An mcb develops an earth fault it will trip the rcd therefor disconnecting everything else covered by that rcd .so that sparks swapped the mcbs to rcbs so an earth fault on an individual circuit will only trip that circuit and not multiple circuits but he should have spotted that there was no main earth cable

It really makes no difference TNS or PME. The network is all PME. That sheath is still connected to neutral in the joint.

@starman_uk 2 месяца назад
A SNE earth from a PILC service would usually be best endeavour for pre 1972 installs if the joint connection supports it and it passes it would usually be offered but some older networks the (typically legacy ex-DC ones) the lead was not bonded across the old joints so would require either a new connection onto the passing main or at least the old joint dug and cross bonded.

Is the Cooker hood ok? I was just thinking as it was close to the faulty sockets. Also if you had 36.5 ohms at the sockets on Zs is the Main earthing arrangement a TT system? I've had it at a property where the main earth was wired to the cutout MET terminal as TNC-S but it wasnt connected inside the cutout on the Dno side.

Up until the 1950's, many electric systems here in Canada were unearthed; there wasn't even an earth wire.

As it stands the DNO duse not have to provide an earth if there is no earth ,they will maintain an existing if one's is there
