I promised I would do a demo video when I finally got my version of the production line model. This is me running the horn through a battery of styles, dynamics, heavy playing, light playing, etc. If you want to see what this CF trombone can do, I think this video gives a decent rundown. *Disclaimer* I'm not Bill Watrous, nor am I Joe Alessi. I am just giving you a feel for this beautiful, brand new, trombone brought to you by Butler Trombones.

I don't know - just me or does it sound kind of dead? Is the instrument missing the ring of brass? Not talking about the player - the horn.

Bruce Kuehn I recorded it with a dry microphone very near the bell. When in a live setting, it’s very ‘brassy’. my goal was to give commercial players a feel for what it sounds like closely mic’d.

Yeah, once you put it into a natural environment instead of one which deadens the sound, it sounds fine.

I just discovered that playing a Bach 42G with a brass slide instead of a nickel silver slide makes a huge difference. I favor the brassy sound with the richness of overtones. I dont think a carbon fiber instrument does the job for me.

Very nice demo that really shows what the horn can do. Seems to have a nice range of character. Just curious to know if you prefer it to a brass bell? Does it play like a 6H or is it just a different horn? and in your opinion is this a bright or a dark horn? Sounds bright to me which I like, but its always hard to be sure on a youtube video. One last question: some horns feel alive when you play them (6H) and some feel dead (3B). How does the Butler feel?
@lvtrombone
@lvtrombone 6 лет назад
Glenn Bartlett it plays similar to an old 6H as that’s what it’s based on. This video I made with varying volume control so you can hear the soft tones and not be too jarred by the really loud stuff.

The sound too me ranges between a non-edgy soft tone to the sound of those kazoo sounding trombone one's we used to get as kids 70 years ago at the Wringling Bros Circus (when ever faster air is applied,but in this synthesized and electronic age I suppose it would have its place...**

Catch me at :53 with some tuba mirum. Also, even though this is a small bore trombone, it has a timbre of a large bore
@lvtrombone
@lvtrombone 6 лет назад
Anne-Marie Gorman Doyle The timbre is extremely versatile based on what you need it to do. I chose the Mozart especially since it is commonly played on a small bore instrument even today.

What kind of mouthpiece are you playing on? I'm guessing 7C or 12C. Also, is that large, medium or small bore?

Nice playing, man. Unfortunately, at a ticket price of $6,000, I heard nothing that bettered a good brass horn. In every style, what this particular demo showed was that it’s got almost as good a sound as a good brass trombone... for a considerably steeper investment. That said, even the narration sounds as though it was recorded through a sofa cushion! If this was supposed to inspire us to rush out and get that horn, it didn’t. Maybe put up a demo that doesn’t have the sound all mushed up like this demo?

This is an old recording and I was only using that mic you see, not a studio setup like I have now. I’m going to be recording a lot more after the holidays on real mics through Logic Pro. The price tag reflects manufacturing costs that are higher due to the technology and techniques involved. The main difference is this trombone weighs A LOT less than brass trombones. If you have shoulder, elbow, and/or hand medical issues, this trombone allows you to continue your musical life. Thank you for your comments. I appreciate everyone’s feedback.

You forgot false tones! :D the ridiculous fake low register all brass players have locked in their basements.

Well..... It is the ugliest trombone I've ever seen but it seems to play really nicely. I imagine the carbon fiber makes the trombone feel very light....
@lvtrombone

David Dickerson extremely light. There's a reason Butler calls it a featherweight slide

I'm no expert but the resonance of brass is completely absent to my ear. It is dry and without character. Not something I will be investing in.

I recorded this with close mic and in a dry environment. If you hear one of these trombones in a Hall, they sound very much like the brass version of the instrument.
@ToccataFilmsAMR

sounds like its muted not a solid sounding trombone. Sounds very subdued. Asking starting price is too much for this horn $3,250. Let's face we're Trombone Players and being one hasn't made me rich. I know its said but regular Jack & Jill trombone players can't afford it. Good luck selling to only the handful and well to do's.

This video was shot on a vocal mic hooked into an iPhone. If you want to make judgements about the instrument, you really need to hear it live. Most pro level instruments cost in the same range as well. This is very much a working trombonist instrument. Being a trombone player and being rich have nothing to do with each other. Being rich has to do with managing finances and investing smartly. Playing trombone at a pro level has to do with practice and routines.
