(5/19/12) Bryan Reynolds from the Butterflies of The World Foundation joins Oklahoma Gardening host Kim Toscano for a look at the differences between moths and butterflies.
I'm working on my moth butterfly bead mask....Thanks for this video..Now, I have the concept that I needed for the wings and colors...designs...And thank you nature....
+OklahomaGardening A collector cannot use a butterfly that has passed away. All insects need to be killed and carefully preserved in order to be a perfect sample. It's as cruel as that. To believe anything else would be utterly naive!
+marion olsen I totally agree with you. It's just like when trophy hunters shoot big wild game. They cut of the heads and hang them on their walls to boast about!! Disgusting if you ask me.
in terms of beauty, the silk moths in particular are the equal of butterflies but even drab moths have a subtle beauty. the sheer variety of moth designs totally outnumbers butterflies. and the hawk moths are probably the most charasmatic of the whole order. the hummingbird hawkmoth is a true wonder of nature
Some of this information is misleading. There are day flying moths whose antennae are slim and look like butterflies. Also, many, MANY moths are vivid and bright and just as beautiful (some more beautiful) than butterflies. For instance, the Spanish moon moths, the Madagascar sunset moth, the comet moth, atlas moth, Luna moth, sphinx moth, etc. and so on. There's just some false info here.
Renee Howard There is a list of plants that do well attracting butterflies. The list has hardiness zones, find yours and maybe look at the soil and water requirements for your area. Hope this helps and gives you some ideas! pods.dasnr.okstate.edu/docushare/dsweb/Get/Document-1126/HLA-6430web%20color.pdf
Bryan Reynolds is also the founder of Butterflies of the World Foundation but here is a link to their website to find out more. www.botwf.org/index.html
It's not entirely true that only butterflies have bright colors and moths are dull. Many moths, especially day flying species, are very colorful. Some even mimic poisonous species of butterfly!
