You really capture sailing; the boat and wind rigging noise and the sudden frantic activity, the angles of the boat the views of water and sails, and all caught on camera

A day on a boat is a good day! If you fall off the boat without a PFD on, it will not be a good day. The chances of you getting back on the boat is near zero, even with a PFD. I have friends tell me they are excellent swimmers. That doesn’t matter when you hit your head on the way over. The only reason you end up in the water without trying is that something went wrong. Be prepared for those times or this could be your last good day on the water.

Good advice here party people. Don’t be like me. Wear your lifejacket. You should wear two. Because I’m not going to wear one, unless the weather is rough. That’s just the way it is. I would consider an automatic inflating one if it’s not too cumbersome. And you will also see me shoeless in all my videos. If safety was first, we would never leave the dock. So remember, safety a close second. Thanks for watching and commenting.

I refurbed a 27' Pearson Ariel several years ago. Complete makeover with a new 8 hp inboard diesel engine. A couple of years later my arthritis kicked in hard and I could no longer trust myself to manage her. She had over $20K in refurb work, paint, new equipment, etc. and I only got around $4K for her when she sold. I miss that boat all of the time. Sailing is just the most relaxing thing I've ever done....except when it's really hot.
@smallsailboatbigwater3959
@smallsailboatbigwater3959 Месяц назад
You probably enjoyed doing the refurb., so there’s an ROI in that. You also left a good boat better than you found it. So that’s gotta make you feel good.

Excellent video. Brought back so many memories. My wife and I live in OK now but while in The Woodlands, we took ASA 101 lessons in Clear Lake and did our solo sail in Galveston Bay. The blue covers on top of your headsail winches are self tailers. You can secure the line in them instead of cleating off. 2-3 wraps on the winch and 1 around the tailer. Watch your lifelines. When the plastic starts cracking and rust bleeds through you are close to failure.
@smallsailboatbigwater3959
@smallsailboatbigwater3959 Месяц назад
Hello, yes, I use the self tailors occasionally. They are very worn and don’t hold as good as I would like. Usually I like to cross sheet to the cleat. I know my lifelines are not to be trusted. I would like to replace them with the braided lines that I see people doing. That’s a project I’d really like to do. I know how important life lines are. I really appreciate your comment, thank you.

Nice video, have a 22 feet sailing cabin cruiser myself and enjoy retirement too. However two things struck me in you video; one you are not wearing a life vest and swimming after you are hit unconscious by the boom is very difficult and two you are on bare feet in the boat, which to my experience is guaranteed to get your foot injured some day. Greetings Peter

Hello, I’m considering purchasing an automatic inflating lifejacket. But I never wear one unless the weathers really really bad. So if you do see me in a lifejacket, you know those waves have gotten big. As far as shoes on a boat I just don’t think they belong. I get much better grip barefoot. Technically, you may make a good point, but after sailing for 30 years this is just what works for me. I know solo offshore sailors, who don’t wear lifejackets, because if they fell overboard, it would just prolong their eventual death. But I appreciate your concern and your comment. Thanks for watching.
@ximono
@ximono 23 дня назад
@@smallsailboatbigwater3959 That's saying something about the mentality of some offshore shorthanders! One thing's for sure, a false sense of security can be dangerous too. It's best to avoid falling overboard alltogether. But I do like the insurance that lifejackets bring when cruising. You never know what will throw you overboard or when it will happen.

When sailing in Alaska, the big hazard was timber floaters just barely under the surface. You hit that tree and BAM, the damage can be fatal. My monthly reoccurring expenses on this boat total $300 a month. $285 Slip Fee, $10 Insurance, $5 Gas Which to a frugal guy like me, is a lot. So I try to make the most of what I get for my money. As well as giving up things that make me sedentary. I just sold all my TV's. for a recent example. I don't want to sit out the rest of the game. If you buy a sailboat that is easy to haul and can be parked in your garage, you're golden. I owned a ComPac 16 and it was perfect for my situation. There is one at the end of my dock that has an enclosed wet head. Tremendous boats that use space wisely. I really wish Hutchins would change the interior of the 23 to be more open like the Flicka. I’ve got a video called Remotely Steer Your Boat From Anywhere. And I also show it in this video. I know it’s a long one, but I have a couple shots of it. It’s just a bungee cord going to the tiller, which I adjust the tension with the number of wraps and then opposite that I have a line going to a block located on the rear stanchion and then I take the line anywhere I want to go. This little system has allowed me to take my boat out alone without any worry. I hope you try it and I hope it works out for you like it has for me. Thanks for watching and commenting. Should the starboard jib sheet be inside the shroud? Enjoy your little boat. Smaller the boat, the bigger the adventure.

On the smaller sail like the 80% and under, I believe I can run them either way. With the 100 or the 150 Genoa they should be on the outside. I’ve sailed on bigger boats on the bay and it’s a little boring. The biggest boat you can get is what you want in the Gulf of Mexico, but this 23 footer is perfect for Galveston Bay. Thanks for watching.

The Laser may be a handful, but a Com Pac 16 or a Montgomery 17 will take good care of you. I owned a CP16, very sturdy, felt invincible. Thanks for watching.

Would that floating hazard be something you could report on your vhf channel 9?
@smallsailboatbigwater3959
@smallsailboatbigwater3959 Месяц назад
I’m not sure about using channel 9. I see a lot of floating stuff in the bay after a storm, but I’ve never seen anything this beefy. I was wondering if I should report it. So I started scrolling and doing a search, while sailing, of what should be done if anything. I saw that the Coast Guard was an option to report a floating hazard to. When I got the boat back, I did some more looking and saw someone had posted a picture of the object on a Texas sailing Facebook page. It looked like a lot of people knew about it. Hopefully no one hit it.

Looking for a boat that will be comfortable for 4 people to weekend. Recommendations? Sailing inland river of the northwest.
@smallsailboatbigwater3959
@smallsailboatbigwater3959 Месяц назад
I would first narrow my search by determining the water depth and maximum draft I’m comfortable with, then decide on which keel configuration is best for you. Next I would choose if I want an inboard diesel or an outboard motor. From there it’s all about design and builder reputation.

Sailboats are so inexpensive for what you potentially get. It's a lot of fun researching which is the best boat for you/where you'll be sailing. Then boat shopping is always a blast. As long as you do it all without borrowing money, it's all good. I hope you go for it. Thanks.

The commercial traffic in Houston Ship Channel and the intercoastal waterway is heavy. Where they merge is called Boliver Roads. Throw in the ferries and shrimpers also. I sailed my J24 from Clear Lake to Offats Bayou engineless and overnight. I had some memorable moments. I would highly not recommend doing what I did, but when you’re young you feel like you can do anything. Thanks.
