Used to navigate longitude on a solo circumnavigation sailing expedition. What more do you need that an Omega is going to offer in any more superior form? Omega has some fantastic watches, excellent movements,has lots of heritage, and some great designs, plus they are better value IF (and only if) you intend to keep them and enjoy them. The Omega is my favorite, come feel, come how it wears, the looks aso. I don't care about the financial value, and people who buy watches to flip are not owning a watch long enough to build up memory and attachment. Omega is superior to Rolex, all what Rolex has is better marketing and artificially making up that they rare - unless you smart and look at their sales figures then you notice they manufacture over a million pieces in a year. Also, don't forget, Rolex was founded by a sales person, not a watch maker.
@TheOldSchoolExpert
@TheOldSchoolExpert 11 месяцев назад
@@ldorman No one who knows anything about luxury watches says Rolexes are rare, including Rolex themselves. It's simple supply and demand. Literally everyone knows or can easily find out that Rolex produces around 1 million watches a year (it's on their Wikipedia page, you don't have to be "smart" to see their sales history as you claim). The difference is that, although they make lots of watches annually, the demand for them is fierce and their supply is not enough to keep up with that demand. It will change one day, but for the time being, the insatiable demand is what keeps their prices high. Not the "rarity" as the Rolex haters love to claim.

@terryl7749
@terryl7749 Год назад
@@johanvandersandt8904 It's all because of social media that people make assumptions on what they hear rather than what they experience. I can only say collect what you like but don't follow trends & fashions. Follow your own path. Never judge a book by it's cover. I've owned 10 Omegas & 7 Rolexes. The wearing experience was completely different. I liked them both for different reasons and it depends on the model. For example I avoid Daytonas and Moon watches (too common). But I love the Explorer 2 and the vintage Speedmaster Mark 2. Both unloved in their own right but they have a great history behind them; without the media hype. The Mark 2 which was designed to replace the Moon watch but got rejected mostly due to NASA budget costs. The Rolex is more an aspirational purchase and a boy's own adventure story kind of watch if you read about the adventures they've been on. Like the Explorer 2 worn by Erling Kagge who wore it to summit Everest and to both solo expeditions of the North & South poles. And Ed Viesturs who also wore it on a majority of his expeditions to the 14 of the eight thousand meter mountain peaks. Mind you these were the days before GPS or mobile phones. The watch was a tool used to navigate. I own a vintage Explorer 2 from the same period. I also have the same reference Submariner as one that was accidentally lost in the Pacific Ocean by a fisherman, which was recovered more than one year later, still working with barnacles growing on it. Hate Rolex if you must and call them inferior in fit and finish but they will almost last a nuclear bomb. Actually there were two Volcanologists that died whilst researching a live volcano and the only remains of them found was a Datejust one was wearing! Then there's also the sailor, Sir Francis Chichester who solo circumnavigated the clipper route for 9 months in the 1960s with only the aid of a sextant and his Rolex Oyster Perpetual to navigate Longitude using the sun and stars. Does it get more reliable than that? I also hate to say it, but they retain their value. I've traded a lot of Omegas and lost money on all but one of them. Over 10 years that amounts to thousands of dollars. We don't like to talk money in this hobby but when you're spending tens of thousands of dollars, you start re-thinking what you should buy. If you only have one watch then that's fine, but as a collector it adds up. You've got to be naive not to think so.

Watches were never meant to be “investments”(unless sentimental or family heirlooms) and might appreciate over a generation but not the way they are being traded now, like a stock option or a derivative. It’s a shame that a group of people driven by money have been able to manipulate the market and drive the narrative because people are missing out on the beauty and fun of horology. To sum it up, you should buy what you like and not be worried about making a buck.

1. Never buy a watch as an investment. Even Rolex. 2. If you’re an end consumer and buying a watch from a gray market dealer specifically Rolex that you’ve probably paid over retail, you’re almost 9 times out of 10 gonna loose money. 3. Ok, so if Omega looses value then buy preowned and save yourself the 30-40% discount. End of the day buy what you like. Watches are made to be enjoyed and passed down. Not an investment.

IMO, neither Rolex nor omega are good for investment currently. If you can buy Rolex from AD then sure that can be an investment piece but if you can't (literally story for 99.99% people), you are paying a premium which you have no guarantee you will get back on resell a few years later.

You know what I agree with him people please keep buying Rolex and making their price go up, it just means I get to buy omega at MSRP or cheaper in the grey market because people are too focused on Rolex to realize omega makes just as good watches. So I get to enjoy the quality of Rolex (or even better at times) at an affordable price and without having to join waitlist or over pay

The thing is… Just like with my Rolex’s my omega watches are intended to be permanent additions to my collection… So the resale doesn’t mean much… I did sell a submariner after only having it for three years… It was in very good condition… Not mint, but close… are the best offer I could find still had me losing 3400 bucks off the retail price that I paid of $10,400… so not exactly value retention as far as I’m concerned

I really appreciate this channel. There is always a lot of useful insight into the watch world, but I have both Rolex and Omega in my collection. I love that both brands exist. I think they both bring their own unique qualities to the table, but it is a hard sell to convince me that Rolex has a stronger build quality than Omega. It is true that Rolex will hold its value and is a much better investment, but I collect watches for the love of them. It has never been transactional for me. Each of my time pieces tells a story and represents a significant moment in my life. I buy them to enjoy them and one day pass down to my kids. It’s never been about turning a profit.

The build quality and design are two different levels? yeah - watch "experts" frequently say Omega's is better. It's the value proposition that people like. Rolex hold their value and no-one seems to be able to explain why.

If you bought a Rolex for more than MSRP you’re a complete fool, unless you’re a gray dealer and take advantage of the fools. Omega from a horological perspective is a better watch. Omegas gorgeous 8900 movement with coaxial escapement and magnetic resistance is far superior to Rolex 3235 movement. Rolex doesn’t even want their movements to bee seen.

Omega collectors are normally smart buyers, buying used, grey market (when the price is right), neon vintage and vintage. I don’t see to many guys buying an Omega at retail to sell it to a dealer for 1/3 the retail price. Watch guys buying retail Omegas have no plans on selling. But he is the honest watch dealer……

Love Omega. All of us should have 1 in the collection. Rolex is overrated, and ppl just buy and sell for profit. Seamasters and speedmasters are ridiculous for the preowned prices. Def wouldn't buy omega new, tho. But that's the pt. im not buying to sell it. Im buying it for the watch look, feel, history and quailty. Not for just the name... smh S/D is annoying, and if ppl stop buying rolex at the high prices, they will go down, and then we all get one for cheaper. Jeez

Charlie, I have to respectively disagree with your opinion. I am talking from experience buying several Omega watches. You are correct that if you buy an Omega from an AD, you may be able to get a 10% discount, but still lose money IF you plan on reselling it in the near future. However, if you shop on the grey market and buy the Omega at a 20%+ discount, then your watch will not lose a great amount of value. Of course if you wear and keep your Omega then it does not matter. Watches are not investments, so if I take the savings from buying an Omega over an equivalent Rolex, I can invest the savings and smile all the way to the bank while WEARING my Omega.

Ah yes absolutely, they are incredible timepieces, if you are going for these it’s definitely best advised to go on the secondary market to save some money. Like you say if it’s to buy, wear and enjoy it doesn’t matter as much in the long run 👌🏻
