Amazing 1964 Gibson GA77 RVT played with a Gibson Les Paul Custom. The 15" speaker is replaced with a 15" Alter 418B which works beauifully with this amp. I was completely blown away by this amp. I used a Sennheiser MD421 U5 to close mic it and an SM57 for the room miking.

These are secret jams for sure. A lot of the old Gibson tube amps are really nice sounding. I find the more I amp shop over the years mid late 60’s are the amp sounds I just dig. Thanks so much for your videos! They give me a real sense of the amp!

I have owned two of these amps. My first was a 1963 that was given to me by my friend's father when I was a teenager. The amp was rather unreliable, and I eventually had it overhauled. Back in 2008, Insane forced to sell the amp. I was in a gigging band at the time and some of my gear was stolen. I needed an amp that was more reliable, so I sold the Gibson. I always regretted getting didn't this amp. It was a gift, and I hated the circumstances that forced me to get rid of it. In 2019, I found a 1962 in pristine condition. Since money isn't an issue any longer, I decided fill the empty part of my soul since getting rid of the amp. I fire up the 1962 every couple of weeks. I love the reverb and tremolo circuit!

small vintage amps are a great way to find some awesome tones. The key is making them safe! Plenty aren't grounded properly or don't have fuses, or someone's been in them with an iron doing strange things.

The gain is awesome but still clarity, just searing for lead… but the highs aren’t harsh and still sounds beefy for rhythm… talk about cutting through a mix and standing out. WOW. Just wow man. Unfortunately, a few years later and the secret appears to be out… although I’ve seen a couple for $1k or under and I can’t think of a modern amp that can do what this guy does for under 1k

What a sound! Thanks Johan!! I would not have guessed this was a 15" speaker if you hadn't told us. I bet it weighed a ton lol. The 12" Altec I keep around is a heavy beast, I can't imagine the 15" version

So bc of you I have 2 Koch Multitone 100’s (bc at $599 why wouldn’t I?) and now a GA-77 Vanguard is OTW… this one has the original Jensen, so I’ll be interested to hear the difference… For under $1k, it’s gotta be work a try. The aggressiveness, responsiveness and clarity from the one in your video is pretty insane. I’m gonna end up divorced for a 3rd time man… but I won’t be bored lol. There’s apparently something about what you seem to be drawn to sonically that lines up really well with my ear. Keep’em comin!

Btw, I would really like to see you try the Marshall Studio Vintage 20! I'm considering getting it as my first tube Marshall. I know this is a common theme in guitar circles but I disagree. Instruments have their own tone and sometimes it doesn't sound good. I think a lot of people don't seem to be able to distinguish between great playing and fundamental tone of instruments. I use this example a lot.... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-D9v5e1TTwts.html Joe Satriani in some fan's basement playing a little practice amp and crappy guitar. The playing is, of course, absolutely amazing, but the sound is just awful. The amp and guitar have way too much high end that sound transistor radio fizzy. (and it's not "youtube compression") It sounds like absolute shit in terms of tone in my opinion. But I'm constantly surprised by how many people think that sounds good. It leads me to believe they can't separate the playing from the tone. When Joe says "that was a little painful on this guitar", I don't think he's only talking about the action...lol. He knows it sounds like shit too.

I had a similar late60s one of these amps - and it was a Les Paul (model name)! I sold it in the early 1980s for £120 - because it always developed faults. Great Jensen speaker, but the sound was nothing exceptional. Still regret selling it though.

So in the US, you can probably find a blackface Concert for a similar price. ($1100 to 1300) I'd have to go with that. Gotta take a pass on any Gibson beyond their 'tweed' era. Have owned them. Tried to gig with them. Sold them.

Do you think an old JBL D120F would work well?- not 15” but could swap a baffle. I was surprised you had so much top end. Was it levels you could stand in your house,....or is this more of a band amp? I’ve only as small, up to 23 watt combos and I’ve learned through experience that number isn’t the whole story. If you have a thought on it, I’d appreciate it. You made it sing and is up there with amps you demo.-thanks I’ve got a 12”Altec 417C come to think of it?-and a 15” alnico reconed Rola but it’s pretty light weight.

Their last attempt at reissuing amps didn't work out so well. But on paper they were awesome. I bought a Gibson GA 5 reissue not so good. I had it modified a couple times because all the components are top grade. Musician's Friends were blowing them out for 299. They were built beautifully but they didn't sound that great.
