I bought ANOTHER Vintage Gibson GA5-t Skylark Amp, I love these little amps and they continue to prove to me the value of small guitar amps. A 5 watt 1x8 combo amp like this is super versatile and makes a great recording amp.

@andrewthomas7573
@andrewthomas7573 4 года назад
Same, I'd love to hear his thoughts on this. I usually use a large diaphragm condenser paired with a 57 for lower wattage amps, but you can also use a ribbon and a dynamic mic (like the 57) paired on almost any amp and it'll sound good. Honestly, it just takes experimenting. Also, the closer you go to the center of the speaker, the brighter your tone, and vice versa. So, with that in mind, you can get a good estimate of where to start (I usually start with my 57 pointed to where the dust cap mets the speaker cone). After that just experiment with different mic combos and different placements and see what you like.

Uh...Rhett... “you can’t use it for gigging.” 1973, I was touring and playing in clubs getting tired of lugging a Super Reverb with a Sun bass cab. We had a good PA system and I started using my 73 Fender Champ mic’d through the PA. Not only is it do-able, a small amp like the Skylark or the Champ can sound great, and it’s easier to lug than a big rig. Nice work and good info. Thanks Rhett!

I have been using an amp I found from a friend of mine that I bought for a $150- virtually brand-new. It is a Fender Mustang Mark III V.2 - from Studio to Stage it is indispensable. The emulations are spot-on including the reverbs. All Digital emulations but the Reverb sounds so real it seems like you should be able to pick it up and drop it and you're waiting for the splash from the Springs but it doesn't happen...!! I took this amp and I put it on a Princeton reverb mid 60s era setting and did a take, then plugged into a real Princeton and I'll be darned if you couldn't tell the difference---- you just could not tell the difference between the two. One single 12 celestion silverback being pushed by a hundred Watts with a plethora of modulation delay and stomp box pedals built-in. If you're looking for a Workhorse of a little lamp or would just like to check out its capabilities just search Mustang III V.2 demo .... I guarantee you you will be very surprised! All of y'all hang tough, stay safe, and don't sweat the of the small shit. Peace, out.

Yep - the first band I heard of using mic'd up amps through PAs were the Tremeloes, a west London band. That was 1967/68 - certainly the only band at that time routing everything through the PA - so it was doable - just that we liked our stacks and we thought they were a bunch of softies for doing it!! It's an ECL82/6BM8 that this amp sports, not EL82. The ECL82/6BM8 is a triode-pentode tube. The triode is used for the tremolo. And in reality, this amp is more like a 3 Watt amp (at least that's the max output noted for single-ended in the ECL82 datasheets).

Though they need to tweak the circuit for an EL-84. Putting an amp on the market that takes an EL-82 or other "off" tube isn't a great idea from a marketing perspective.

With the cabs placed reasonably close, you'll get a sympathetic bass response from the two cabs that will sound way bigger than 8" speakers. And the depth you'll get from the wet/dry will be astounding. Alas, for my small apartment, a DSL1CR on 0.1 Watts mode is as loud as I can get. Dimed on the clean channel with the Tele is a glorious thing, though. Haven't gotten evicted after several months, so I'm calling this a win.

I think it sounds great. Some people are unaware that Jimmy Page recorded many huge-sounding rhythm tracks on the first Led Zep albums using a TELECASTER and a low-wattage Supro amp. I used to own a Gibson GA-6 which I sold because I'm an idiot.

Just found and bought a Skylark from my local Guitar Center. The thing is very clean and in great shape, but I'm getting a nasty 60-cycle hum which makes it basically unusable. Is there anything I can do about that? It still has the original 2-prong plug which I assume is the reason. Any ideas would be appreciated!

GIBSON actually made some truly great amps over the years ridiculously underrated but from what i understand they were not generally durable enough for the road and plus GIBSON just simply wasn't willing to do what was needed for proper promotion of its amplifier lines. especially alot of their 70's solid state amps were probably some of the best solid state amps you could get in the 60's and 70's but, again, GIBSON didn't promote enough and they were a little too delicate to take on the road.

I tried to email you but it got complicated... I just picked up an old Fender Bronco. It needs a speaker and I ordered a Celestion TF0818 8". If you like I'll keep you informed....

Rumble & Shake it All Over are the first 2 songs I learned back in 5th grade from my brother on his 58 Les Paul Jr & Premiere twin 8 amp Widows Peak with Tremolo.He gave me the guitar & amp because he said I’m a natural. I still have the guitar but the amp.... well it died a horrible death down a flight of basement stairs. When I plugged it in it smoldered & sputtered. I was in 9th grade in 1971.I found another one in Houston but they won’t sell it. Really would like to have one again.

I bought a 1966 GA-15RVT last year for $450 Canadian, all original, and it sounds great. It has a ton of headroom though, so nearly impossible to send into overdrive without pedals. Speaking of which, it takes pedals amazingly well.

Got a 80 year old Magnatone for less than $200 Canadian. With a simple solder that thing starting to sing. 6 Watts, and all the tubes have been out of production since the 60s. The replacement tubes I had to get were NOS surplus for US Navy Radar systems!

I have a more modern '90s GA30rvs, that I will never get rid of. But in the reissue plan you speak of don't forget the Gibson Maestro Rover Cab, good enough for Gilmour...

I'm pretty sure Gibson reissued the Les Paul Jr. amp (the one that's basically a PTP Champ circuit with different transformers) about a decade ago. Not sure how accurate historical accurate they were I think they Mojotone build them with hand wired boards, Carbon Comp resistors and Heyboer iron. I recall they didn't sell too well and they can be had used for a song nowadays. would love to try one.

”You’re not gonna be able to gig with this thing” and less than one minute later; ”Under a microphone these amps don’t sound like they look.” Why wouldn’t you be able to gig with it? Mic it up, some EQ and bluesy stuff. That’s it. Just because you think it’s not the best for live use, doesn’t mean that someone is not gonna be able to gig with it.

Hi Rhett, knowing that you own both a 50s and a 60s GA5. Do you have a preference? I am looking for one now and can't decide which one. Is there any difference in tone with these amps? I believe the 50s may have an 8 inch speaker and the 60s has a 10 inch speaker?

Hey Rhett, late to the party here. Great video and congrats on the Skylark. Love them old Gibbys. Did you ever get the tremolo issue sorted? If so, what was the fix?

What price is fair for this amp? Was thinking of getting a Princeton reverb for that clean tone, edge of break up etc. but... it’s only for recording so maybe this would be better. It will be my only amp. Until...

Maybe a 10'' speaker like the eminence RF10c would be a good replacement for an old 8'' if Gibson were to revisit these?

I just had a 62 Skylark come in yesterday and the gain will not get close to that. It has some really old RCA tubes in it so this afternoon I’m going to swap some gold lion 12ax7s in the pre and see what that does. Amp still sounds great as is. It can get close to Rocky Mountain way breakup with my 59 ri

Ohhh shit.. those first chords and that fucking amplifier's sound. Taste. Side note, you are a gear collector, bro. Maybe not a glutton like say, Bonamassa, and that is a good thing, but a collector nonetheless.
