I remember buying my first 100. Saved up for it, I was planning to begin my LLC January 1, 2018. Went through them quick. Createspace was going and I wanted the books I had already written to be under my business' imprint. After going through the second 100, I finally went for the 1000. I went "ouch" at the price, but even as much as I write, writing another 200 more books now that I've slowed down, may not happen. But never say never.
I totally remember that. I recall you saying how you'd rather get it done with. I didn't pull the trigger till about 2021. All the time before that, I just used free ISBNs. I've been slowly updating all fitness books with the new ISBNs. I've got about another dozen books to update and publish wide. It's just been tough taking the time to do it. As you know, it's not a simple button click. haha
Hey, thanks so much. That's what I aim to do. More content on the horizon. I'm working on three new pieces right now with one deep dive about how much self-published authors make. It's been insightful.
Hey, thank YOU! You're the first commenter this time. haha I didn't release this last night to the channel members because the thumbnail wasn't ready. Otherwise, you would've seen this pop up in your feed around 12:30am EDT. I appreciate your support, DL!
I totally see why you’d feel that way. It’s a huge reason I saved up the $1500 to get 1000. Now, I’m never going to have to worry about ISBNs. I’m typically launching five iterations - ebook, paperback, hardcover, and audiobook - so that’ll cover at least 200 publications. I highly doubt I’ll hit that. Haha but, if I do, I’m ready for it.
Solid information Man. I think the more things develop with Independent Authors taking control over their business (and relying less on external platforms) the less they will have to rely on ISBN. I think that should be the goal in my humble opinion. Side note to Authors, on KDP, for E-Books only you can still put your own publishing name even if you use a KDP ISBN. Hope that helps someone. I'm super curious if you were using a teleprompter in the video. That was a lot of information and the delivery was great. If you did use a teleprompter, bravo! I didn't see your eyes moving at all, 2 Thumbs up. Thanks again for the video.
Yes! Totally forgot to mention using the imprint slot on the ebooks. I shared that tip awhile ago in my 50 tips for KDP but it slipped my mind. And yep, that’s a teleprompter. I use the teleprompter for almost all my content, even the podcast. The only time I don’t use it is for the news segment since it’s merely me sharing the info and my raw reaction. Thanks for the high praise. I’d like to think that after 1,500 videos I’ve gotten a little bit better. 🤏 haha
I always buy my ISBN. I typically buy the group of ISBNs as those are cheaper than just buying one and I normally need 3 for a book. I know the e-books do not require one but I still use one. I would caution individuals, in the US, just to purchase them from Bowker, who is the only one authorized to sell the ISBN. Countless ads are saying they can purchase one from a person or another company, do not do that, as it is not yours.
Exactly! I hope people caught that in the video where I explained getting it anywhere else is a waste. I blew $50 on a third-party company only to find out they had THEIR name on the imprint, not mine.
My head is STILL going around ;-) After being a journalist for 40 years (!), I wrote eight children's books in a matter of months but it's been YEARS trying to figure out how print them cheaply (without ISBN numbers) to just have on hand to sell when I sub in schools (people only BELIEVE you're an author if you have a physical book in the trunk of your car. ;-) Amazon was a no-go for me (print on demand turned out to be be over $1000 once I looked into it). Your info is so delicious and detailed--do you have a U.S. printer that you recommend ? (more for the trunk of the car ;-)
IngramSpark, BookVault, Lulu, and Barnes & Noble Press will allow you to print books through them without distribution, if you want. Here’s a recent videos with some options: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-WDDb6siOWEk.htmlsi=V0KEqpL9uv4S4duj
I live in Thailand, but plan to sell through D2D in the US. I'm concerned that the country code in the ISBN will throw a wrench in things if I obtain through Thailand. What are your thoughts?
I'm. Confused about something. On my research about ISBN I notice some known authors publish their ebooks on kdp using kdp's ASIN, but when looking somewhere else like B&N the same author chooses to use an ISBN for the same ebook. So, why not using the same ISBN if you already have it?
@dalelroberts I am an author from South Africa. I used Amazon's free ISBN and take your advice to just deselect them. I am going wide on 1 July 2024 and I got a couple of ISBN's from the South African ISBN agency which is our National Library (we work the same way as New Zealand). It's free of charge in South Africa by the way. Now, if I put my ISBN on my book which identifies my country, won't I run into difficulties when it comes to distribution in US or UK book stores and Libraries (I intend to use D2D)? Won't it be better for me, as a South African to use D2D's free ISBN? I just set up my Company (what you call an LLC in the US), and don't want to make costly mistakes which I can avoid. Thank you for all your advice by the way. I also subscribed to your videos on your website. Greetings from South Africa.
