I agree about the old farmers giving advice. A lot of old old farmers have kids that left and don’t want to work the farm. They’ll be glad to pass on their knowledge with the younger folks if they are just willing to listen and learn. Also, take the time in return to go help the farmer out with some work on his place. I’m sure you’ll get just as much out of the day as the farmers gets from you helping. Remember when these old timers are gone their gone and their knowledge goes with them and that knowledge is something you can’t learn on YT. God bless from Missouri

My wife and I are breeding kunekune in Western NC. What we have found is the only way to know for sure what you’re getting is to buy registered stock and follow the breed standards as much as possible when breeding to sell. Anything less than quality should be put into a meat program or sold unregistered.
@HomesteadingtheHardWay
@HomesteadingtheHardWay 2 года назад
I've seen to many registered animals that just had a piece of paper stuck with them . Ran into that with a boar this year already. Best thing is learn how to judge an animal for yourself. For registered stock to be off all that had to happen was someone threw a few extra pigs of the right color in the litter and that used to be common. That and there can be a world of difference in the same breed .
@HappyQuackFarms
@HappyQuackFarms 2 года назад
Regarding registered KuneKune- you’ll notice the NZ bloodlines are much bigger and faster growth than American bloodlines- I see it all the time with KuneKune pigs that are registered and looking up the bloodlines and yep every time the smaller ones are American KuneKune
@HomesteadingtheHardWay
@HomesteadingtheHardWay 2 года назад
@@HappyQuackFarms it's the same way with large breeds , there can be a wide difference from one bloodline to another. I've stuck with a Duroc base and bred for type, mothering ability and vigor in boar's . Things that are gone from the confinement bloodline.
@HomesteadingtheHardWay
@HomesteadingtheHardWay 2 года назад
@@HappyQuackFarms l need to do a video on " registered" stock I don't think people know how common fake papers and switching papers on grade animals is . G'day Chris, the hubby and I love your content and lessons your teaching. Duroc pigs are what we are going to start breeding soon, we did have saddle backs but want something a bit different this time round. Do you have certain traits that you look for in a hog?. Cheers from Australia 😊
@HomesteadingtheHardWay
@HomesteadingtheHardWay Год назад
When picking breeding stock you want a long pig that's symmetrical and has good lines , stands well ( good legs ) a good under line even teats 14 preferably . Look at the parents you want good big sows with a little backfat but not too much . A decent temperament is a plus but most of that is handling avoid anything overly line bred

@HomesteadingtheHardWay
@HomesteadingtheHardWay 2 года назад
Our stuff is harvested with a self propelled combine and it's clean enough for feed . Tow behind combines exist but I haven't seen one in decades . For making flour we clean the grain by pouring it in front of a fan and looking it over good but it's whole grain
@David-kd5mf
@David-kd5mf 2 года назад
@@HomesteadingtheHardWay I've looked at a foot powered thresher that amish were using on youtube. Also looked at a seed cleaning machine. They would have to be used in combination though. Most of my wheat is near ready to harvest is why I am investigating. It's just a 20ft by 100ft plot in between rows of trees in my yard. But next year id like to do half acre to an acre of small grain on land I'm renting. I will probably use a drill with a rod that has chains attached in a five gallon bucket to flail the heads of wheat in a blending action like I saw on the RU-vid's to thresh. Then use pouring with box fan to winnow and clean the wheat this year.
