About:
Jason and Lorraine. In 2016 we sold most of our belongings and left the city in southern California to start a small homestead in the mountains of North Carolina. We left the city in search for a more minimal and intentional life. We became passionate about growing our own food and knowing what exactly is in our food after I (Jason) became diagnosed with cancer. Now 8 years in remission we as a family are on a journey to live our passions.
We document our life on RU-vid videos to inspire others to get out of their comfort zone and not be afraid of change. We started our own online general store where we have available the things we make and use in real life. Thank you for following us on this incredible life changing journey!

If you shop around you can probably find your piglets for $20-$40. Also your take home meat is usually about %65 of your hanging weight.

Jason you all did a great job, and by charging just a little more you can break even next time. If you wanted, you could even grow a couple of pigs all the time, and sell them both at a profit until you need the meat again yourself.

Raised two pigs for several years. Fed them mostly barley. Ended up costing $600 per pig. But butchered them myself as I wanted the bones for stock and the skin on. At the time store pork was cheaper, but, the flavor of the homegrown pork more than made up for the added cost and effort. Pigs are super easy to raise, even in Alaska.

Also better to raise at least 2 pigs because they are social animals and this will cause less stress in the pigs.

wow! - amazed at the prices you pay for all of this. We do the same, but buy the pigs once weaned. The cost £35-50 each. The abattoir processing fees is around £75 for each and this includes brining for bacon, ham and making sausages. FYI £1 = $1.30

It would be interesting to know next time, how many labor hours you devote to pigs. If you include a minimum wage figure, that would be helpful. And all the overhead cost which is water turned on by an electric pump. Portion of insurance and property taxes as well. Your pigs were very healthy looking! I think they are my favorite but I have no clue about the difference in taste between breeds.

With only raising 2 pigs...you are doing good to break even. Hard to "make" money with only two pigs...unless you are going to sell both of them. I did the same thing last year, and broke even. I have 6 this year and am projected to make a little profit. Keep doing what you are doing. Love your channel and the informative lessons you put out there.

You did really well getting your own pasture-raised, non-GMO pork. Add to it all the fun 🤪😉. The processing was the most expensive part of the operation, over $1/lb.
@karincartwright8752
@karincartwright8752 3 года назад
I did my own pig math. Cost to raise AND process two pigs: $1403.00. That's $3.42 per lb processed. Charge $7.00 per lb and you get $1400 back on the 200 lb pig. That means you paid out $3 for your 210 lb of pork in the freezer. But since you charged $1000 you paid $403 for your 210 lb of pork. That's pretty dang good!!! Paying for the structure needs to be factored in over SEVERAL pig raisings.

Great video! My father passed away last November and now it’s me and my mother who I cannot and will not leave because she only has me and no other family. We currently live in AZ and we’re going to Tennessee to look for some property and start a homestead and quiet living. I’ve been researching a lot about animals that I’d like to get to provide us with humanly raised quality organic meat. I have some years of horticulture and gardening from school courses but never got into the animal part. These types of videos are so incredibly helpful and I only hope things will fall into place without many failures which I know will happen regardless of how hard I try, but the goal is to minimize these failures. I really appreciate this content as it can be used as a guide to help me understand the process a bit more. Thank you!

Jason, you missed including the cost of wood chips in the cost, while the value of compost in the income. Also can you raise 3 pigs within the same structure. If so, doing it in future will ensure your pig will cost you zero, if you decide to sell 2.

Wow! You guys scored on that feed! First time we raised pigs we ended up with over $5/lb our cost. We mixed our own feed from organic grains from a local homestead store. This time we’re raising more pigs and buying in bulk, 2 ton totes. Roughly $850 in feed for every 3 pigs, not including any supplements. Off to watch your other videos and see how you fed these guys! Also, why Berkshire?

If you can go grass fed in mobile pens and process the animal yourself, even better - AND - YOU did this and now you know more about what it cost you and what you might do differently next time. Costs of production are amortized over the life of the item, not on one cycle. Great video - thank you.
