In Germany there is a ban to import animal products etc from outside the EU, but it seems i can just order some WII or Gamecube from Japan and get some free Bugs with it. Interesting.
Your write speed is set to aws and if you've not configured it it will default to max wrote speed which will cause issues. Put it 2x and it will probably work.
The word "off" in Japan is a synonym for discount. For example, their version of half-priced books is Book Off. So hard off isn't much of a stretch. Instead of naming it off, hard off would mean very discounted. I even saw a sign for a store named Jack Off. This would be like calling it Jack's discount store.
The "hard" in "hard off" refers to hardware. Japanese shorten the word "hardware" to just "hard" and "software" to just "soft". You can buy stuff like old DVD players, random TV remotes and unknown cables, old PC parts, old home appliances such as microwaves and takoyaki makers, etc.
Its nuts how a junk bin in Japan has so much good quality expensive stuff for a low price- Like... easily fixed stuff just being tossed and sold for 1-3 bucks.
@@SoidSnake I'd agree with you if it weren't for thr fact that like none of it is actually broken past a single fault, so I can't imagine what their criteria for unrepairable is.
@@lepidotos The point being that we the western world and the Japanese world live by the same rule. If it doesn''t work, get rid of it. But for the westerners it goes to the garbage bin, while for the Japanese it goes to the cheap broken bin instead, which is much better,
Your videos inspired me to apply to a local retro games store for a technician job and I actually got it! I’ve been working on GameCubes and 3DS’s for the past two weeks and I’m so excited
Yeah, I had a similar situation with my 4$ GBA, when the cartridge port was just dirty, and the owner's kid smashed the screen in anger... And the crystal oscillator also fell off the PCB. But after 5 bucks for parts and a few months of frustration about our mail services, I have a beautiful orange handheld!
my favourite thing about discounted Japanese items is that a dent box which is a minor inconvenience in the west is enough to drop the price of a figure by like 80%
If there is one defining feature of western consumers its that they don't care until AFTER they make the purchase, THEN they complain. The idea that you don't have to buy something if you have an issue with it is genuinely something that got lost somewhere in the past few decades. People would rather just tweet #RightToRepair from their new iPhone 18 pro maxes, then just not buy that unrepairable device and buy a repairable device instead.
Just a tip, to remove stickers, soak them in regular pharmacy alcohol for a minute or two. The alcohol will disolve the adhesive and you'll be able to lift the sticker with no problems. You can even use contact cleaner or 70% alcohol to not damage the plastic. Also to adjust the potentiometer, you absolutely need a tester or you won't be able to read anything and you risk putting a too high/too low value which can burn out the laser.
@@TylerFurrison hm, possibly, but couldn't wd40 also? Of course, test it first. With goo gone, you don't have to soak it for an hour, usually works almost instantly so it doesn't expose to the plastic for very long.
While it wouldn't have made a great video if you left it at that, I find it hilarious that the GameCube was sold for $3 because of a barely dirty port. We can always rely on Hard Off to do not great in their favor with pricing
I'm actually gonna do this, no joke. In my case, I'm gonna bring back a ton of books and manga, but I might also just pick up some old school gaming stuff, like an n64 and a couple of gameboys
I vaguely remember that my cousin made a Record demo with a cd and he came by to try and listen to it with his band at our place, but the only available player was a mini dvd player, he improvised and he trimmed the dvd with a scissor into the size of mini dvd and it worked. He got famous all over the land with that record
I've been using my GC loader for a little over a year now. I LOVE this thing. Pro Tip: Format your SD card in exFat, not Fat32. Solved a huge problem I had with 3/4 of my games not loading.
@@FurryShep On the Switch, that's caused by Nintendo's poor handling of the exFAT file system. It's honestly not the best file system to begin with though lol
If you get the Action Replay Media Launcher, you don't need to replace the disk drive with an emulator. It's just an SD card adapter for the save game card slot. You do need some homebrew software in order to actually launch anything from the SD card though. I think I've got Swiss burned to a mini DVD to load me into a homebrew environment that supports this SD card method.
What gen of gc loader are you using, im on gen 2 and the exfat is the one that causes problems and fat32 works fine, bit there are some games that both have trouble with
Reminds me of what I've gone through chipping my PS1. Some CDRs work better than others, some drives play better with the media, and some laser mechs read more clearly than others. It really is worth the money to do the SD mod, if you're set on real hardware.
Hah, I went through that headache 20 years ago with my freshly modded PS1. Burn speeds, brands, software, which actual drive you are using to burn with etc.... I recently got out my old PS1 and it had an old game in it from back in the day... When I took it out it brought out some of the drive spindle pieces with it! I did a quick and nasty DIY fix with my oldest kid and got it working again but ran into the same problem with it being super fussy about what it would and wouldn't play. But you know what isn't? A soft modded PS3. That sucker plays everything I've thrown at it, discs I marked as bad burns, skipping cut scenes, skipping music (I'm looking at you Wip3out and Tekken 3) only downside is no beatmania... Until I work out Tonyhax on my PS2 that is!
Well they were never designed to run on burned CDs in the first place, I remember having the same hassles even on my modded PS2. SD mod is the best solution.
Oh Man, I saw this vid’s community post only about 20 minutes ago. I ended up on your unwinnable Minesweeper video, but suddenly here it is! Edit: I’d love to see a GC Loader video. I’ll never say no to another console modding video from you.
Nintendont is also pretty bad. Spent hours installing and configuring it, only to have mixed results. This was like 5 plus years ago, maybe it’s better now
Wait, Matt solved a problem the very first try without jumping through 17 different complicated hoops over the span of a few weeks?? I guess just like discs, Matt has also evolved. Also, I'd LOVE to see a GCLoader settup/review from you!
GC Loader works great, I've modded 2 Gamecubes with them. No solder no mess and with a 3D printed insert looks almost factory. Look for forward to more vids, keep up the great work!
I'd definitely be interested in seeing you install the GC Loader. I'll admit the picture you showed with it installed certainly is a strange look for a console. I'm curious if you have any ideas on making it more aesthetically pleasing once installed.
@@t0biascze644 True, tho the menu will remain in japanese. I would just either mod it to ntsc or install a region switch cuz why not, It only seems to be a positive.
@@Strashky I mean does that really matter? Your just skipping past it to get to the game and the memory card. For than sake of usage I would probably just switch it to English permanently
There are some types of adhesive that can be softened by using a bit of vegetal oil, like the ones that hold on labels on plastic bottles. It's my last resource, if no other solvent i tried works, usually oil works. The cleanup is pretty easy, just a bit of soap and water and it's done.
Depending on your GC model, you may be able to get away with an SD2SP adapter which plugs into the serial port on the bottom. Or you can get one of the memory card SD card adapters.
In the future, there’s this stuff called “goo-gone” it gets rid of really hard stuck adhesives and sticker shit. It might not be available locally but I’m sure there’s other stuff that does the same. It smells terrible but works a treat
Glad I subbed! These videos are great. I'm sure you're getting a ton of different suggestions for removing stickers, but for me lighter fluid works every time. For whatever reason it's really good at loosening adhesive. I've used it to remove old stickers from pre-owned games, and to move stickers from gameboy carts onto new shells. You have to be kind of liberal, but it works super well and dries out nicely.
Note: if you get the Action Replay Media Launcher, you don't need to replace the disk drive with an emulator. It's just an SD card adapter for the save game card slot. You do need some homebrew software in order to actually launch anything from the SD card though. I think I've got Swiss burned to a mini DVD to load me into a homebrew environment that supports this SD card method.
How did you get that Gamecube through customs with all those dead insects inside it? Aussie and NZ customs shows air all the time here and they're neurotic about anything like that getting through :D But joblots are great for cheap hardware, I got five Orange Japanese gamecubes in one once. Also came with an FM Towns Marty and a 3DO FZ-10.
I bought a lot with 5 ds's 18 dsi's 1 gamecube 7 n64 controllers 2 gamecube controllers (All for repair but thats what im interested in) and a shit load of games i lost count of mostly n64 and gamecube all for 258$ on ebay. (The games alone are like 300$ so i basically got the ds's i wanted for free.) The guy even tossed in a n64 rumble pack with the box for free but sadly someone left battery's in it so i will have to see if that can be fixed. Its rare but you can find quality lots on ebay if you know what your looking for and check daily, Or sometimes hourly if your looking to snag something cheap and you just refresh the search sorted by newly listed.

I LOVE your content, I can't wait to see what you come up with next, I really like these teardown and repair videos, could you do one on an Xbox 360 with the RRoD?
Miss my GameCube so much. Took it to a friend's for a weekend, then when packing it and bringing it back, it was mysteriously missing once home.. Hm. But nice video! Yours is silver, like mine was, and it brought back the nostalgia of how fun they were.
I had a similar experience with this wii i found in one of those free bins at a used game store Dirty af but it seemingly works after a good cleaning (only tested the power receiving so far)
You should make more gaming console restoration videos Matt. I agree with you, solving the puzzle that comes with each device is the most interesting aspect of the device itself. All the restoration videos now are just the generic hgih speed facebook watch video without narration where the guy just restores the plastic/metal and puts it back together. Your series is truly unique and hopefully the view counts reflect that!
You remind me of me, I definitely know the pain of trying to burn games to a disc now and whether or not if they'll work. Earlier this year I went and ordered an A/V cable for my Dreamcast - I had not used my DC since 2006 or so, and severely misplaced the original cable that I still can't find. Anyway, I started looking into used game prices, decided fuck that noise, and opted for burning game images to disc. Found some online resources for fairly better quality CD's than just Verbatim, ordered an entire stack, and then later found out each game's image is missing one or two minor things just to make the image small enough to fit on a CD-R, not only that but I then encountered games with multuple discs, like Shenmue, and one disc is too large still for CD-R's, so I had to try and find larger media CD-R's, tried burning that disc, and it STILL does not work. So, yeah, at some point I will probably mod my DC with GDemu or what ever it's called. I also got into burning PS1 games recently when I looked into jailbreaking my PS3.
@@MilkerMurphy lmao that's easier said than done, i've ruined many DVD's doing that and when it does work it'll be an ugly disc that will only work for a little while.

That's a lot more effort than printing a replacement top shell, but it has the advantage that your burned games will work on consoles with the original shell

This is a fun video! Snarkier than most game system repair RU-vidrs, like if FrameRater started repairing game systems. I put that chip in my GameCube, procured from a Goodwill in southern Arizona. The price? Five dollars. The inside was a sticky brown mess, but it cleaned up perfectly fine. I appreciate Xeno's one and done design, without having to run wires to tiny pads on the GameCube PCB, but yeah, actually having to solder those points is slightly fidgety and imprecise. It's kind of a miracle that it turned out as well as it did.
I've found for stickers that scoring the sticker in a 5mm grid on a shallow ~20° amgle with a fresh sharp utility blade first then squirting with flux off works well without reacting with the plastics. Leave for an hour then scrape away with a spudger.
For stickers, where the surrounding paint wont peel off anyway, put clear plastic tape down over it, and yank the tape off. repeat as necesary. it will tear the paper off bits at a time, and then will get the glue off.
I have a perfectly working gamecube but this video made me really interested in maybe modding it and doing the 3D printing so it can run full size DvDs thanks for this video!
I can personally vouch for the GC Loader! As someone who has ZERO soldering skills it's an easy mod and the recent updates to Swiss (Homebrew OS) have really made it the premium way to run games off solid state media for the GC. It's Also worth getting an 3D printed mounting bracket so that the SD card is easily accebiliy. Laser Bear sells them as a kit. Oh yeah and an SD2SP2 too, for additional storage.
I replaced the top LED of mine with a blue LED, added blue LEDs to the controller ports, a XenoGC modchip which annoyingly has 2 same colour LEDs, and some homebrew software on mini DVD that can load games from an SD card from an Action Replay SD Media Launcher.
2 years ago.... Walmart had packs of Memorex Mini DVD’s on clearance for $3.... I bought them all thinking I’d eventually “Need” them.... 2 years later.... I have FINALLY found a use for them.. Thanks 😁
I was happy to be in the first batch of people that got the GCLoader, allowed me to pawn off my full sized DVD gamecube for WAY more than I would get now. Right before the GCLoader those things went loose for around 150 euro for whatever reason. I still remember them being sold about a decade ago for 30 though, but even back then they weren't particularly easy to find.
