6th reason not to get a big boat: Worrying constantly while underway about how much water is under your keel, worrying the entire time you are anchored that the anchor will slip and you will drift. Everybody on board hasn't a care in the world except the owner who can never relax.
@BarrierSecurity
@BarrierSecurity 6 месяцев назад
This is actually true, but it's also the thrilling part of owning a boat: Slightly nerve-wrecking challenges, adventures and taking these risks can give you some nice adrenaline.

Value isn’t always about $$. Value of spending time with your family is priceless. The time I spend with my kids on our boat outweigh any cost.

Good video. I currently have a 21-ft bowrider & everything he says is negative IS negative. But I've been around boats since I was about 10 (& from a Pop Mechanix plan, built a 1-sheet plywood boat when I was 12) & love them. To me, the 4 good things far outweigh the 5 bad. There's nothing like cruising across super smooth water while watching the sun sink/come up over the horizon & there's nothing like anchoring w/a cooler full of drinks, food, a little shade & a good book. I've also raised my 4 kids to love boats, skiing, tubing, wakeboarding, swimming & generally being on the water. And I've experienced lots of bad . . . dead batteries, no fuel, storms, trailer flats (1 on the interstate, no less), numerous broken parts/accompanying big repair bills, dishonest mechanics, stressful ramp launchings/loadings, a crash close call or two and more. But on the water . . . . mobility is nobility. There's a psychology associated with boating, being on the water & conquering the challenges that keeps me ticking.

The 5 reasons you mentioned are the same 5 reasons why you should not get married and the 4 reasons why you should own a boat are the same as the 4 reasons why you should get a divorce. 1. you will be healthier (less stress is the best) 2. Soul therapy ahhh need I say more? 3. New and great life style (can't argue with that) 4. You learn not to get married again...Thanx this was most helpful got to go do what I got to do.

The happiest two days of boat ownership is the day you buy your boat and the day you buy a bigger boat. The other statement that somebody made about the best two days of boat ownership was written by a whack job that cannot afford a boat or somebody that bought a boat that gets seasick. I love my Yacht! I love sailboats and I love power boats actually I love anything that floats. Have fun on the water enjoy life to the fullest

Also it just wasn’t the right time in our life, today is a different story. Everything said here is true. 1 positive thing left out was it is a different lifestyle boat owners of 30 ft to 50 ft, you will find you fellow boaters and those that are on their boat more often (on their boats at marinas). They take care of each other and a nice social life. Also newbies, watch out for salesmen of new boats that once the paper is signed your on your own. Take boating and navigation training before actually buying a boat. You will learn much and maybe save your lives. For me and also with him, once on the water all my stress went away until docking in high winds. Learn 1st.
@Ocean4Life
@Ocean4Life 5 лет назад
Yumpin Yiminy Agree 100%. When we had signed the contract for our first boat all help from the salesman suddenly ended ... The friendships and helpfulness in the marina was a true joy - nice people with common interests. And once onboard all everyday stress would be gone in 10 minutes, every time :-)

Many years ago, I was docked at my marina an notice a new boat was delivered. The dealer docked it bow in. I think it was a 26' Regal sundeck. It was a holiday weekend and I noticed this oriental (race is irreverent) family of like 8 to 10 people go past my slip and down to the new boat. I am sure there was not enough life vests nor did the owner have a clue about boat safety, etc. The dealer won't tell you it has no brakes:-) He backed out of the slip, the wind caught the bow and he panicked trying to turn it around. He ended up hitting the anchor pulpits of the 3 boats between his and my slip. It took out his windscreen and put a big gash in the port side hull. The 3 boats were also damaged. I help him get back to his slip. A month later all the boats were fixed and his had a 4 sale sign on it. Ouch!

I am very happy for you. Seriously. Tell me, are owners with that kind of money and size of boat take care of each other and as socially at the marina? I assume you have a captain and crew to take care of it and navigate. I am just saying that is a small % level than most will ever experience. Check out this Riviera 68'. i bought a 15ft boat with a running 2 stroke engine. 2 weeks ago, the starbord, port lights are brand new got them for free since they followed with the boat., lantern i got for free, the only thing i paid for was the new paint, ancher, rope, and some boat cleaner, there is no fee to let your boat out at the marina here, i already have first aid kit, and a fire estingusher, i only use it in the lakes here to fish. the boat cost me 1709 pounds including a good trailer. and i have just bought 175 pounds worth of items. so it really depends on person to person, but i really like your opinion it helps people understand that owning a boat is not cheap, and i have a boat saving fund of another 2000 pounds just for emergency if i need new parts or anything. so money wise its planned out, and i love taking my dad and brother out fishing every chance i get, its really worth it the memories i get is priceless. and im the same as you i want my kids to grow up with boats and make a good memory with them, when it comes to fishing and the ocean. in my personal opinion if you have the money and the time i would say buy a boat, you will not regret it, but dont buy a to big of a boat.

Beautiful video - refreshing, honest and passionate insight into boat ownership and a boat owner's outlook on life. I particularly enjoyed your points about a positive of boat ownership being time with family and being out in nature. Boat maintenance and upkeep can also be time with family - the jobs can be done with your partner and involve your children and teach them how to care and maintain for a boat.

I bought a new boat, my thought was to sail around the world. So with a new boat nothing will break or wear out until I get back. So I put some food in the fridge and left the West Coast of Canada in 2016. Currently in New Zealand and my plan is working out just fine. Nothing wearing out, nothing broken, no no no I’m just kidding. Even a brand new boat has many issues. Thanks for your candor. Cheers Scott My RU-vid channel is “Off the Starboard Hull” 23,000 Nm and counting.

Off The Starboard Hull we bought our first boat brand new for the same reason. We quickly learned there is a lot of adjustments and repairs first year. Luckily we had the dealer very close by. In 1 year they fixed: faulty heater, battery, toilet, leaky water and diesel tanks, faulty instruments, leaking hatch ... and probably more. Our second boat was 4 years old and such a quality product with few errors. I envy your sailing adventure ⛵️⚓️

My brother (who spent money like there was no tomorrow) bought a new 32 ft. cruiser. Lovely boat. Slept four comfortably and had two Merc stern drives. I told him he'd regret it and he did. He wanted it to travel the Trent/Severn waterway system in Ontario, Canada. Between the initial cost, the fuel (it sucked gas like there was no tomorrow), cost of a covered slip at a marina, insurance, having it taken out in the fall and put back in when spring arrived and continually cleaning bug and bird crap off it, he sold it two years later. Unless you have "buckets of money" owning a larger boat is crazy.

All valid points. For me, investing the time, effort and funds to keep a 27’ center console is worth it. The one point I would add is that there is always something new and exciting on the ocean. I've avoided the negatives by having a 4.8m trailered boat that's parked in my garage. It doesn't cost too much to maintain and it allows me to go to enough places either in rivers or off the coast when the weather is good. Big boats are just too much hassle and most yacht clubs you go past, most of the boats are moored and you wonder why.

This video is REALLY really good! Really enjoyed it. You covered it all. There is one thing I would undeline for certain parts of Norway and Sweden: The potential danger of running on ground, thus the importance of avoiding it. I've been teaching people practical navigation for more than 15 years and find this to be the critical point for us all, even pros (applies to coastlines with a lot of rocks). Every now and again I hear about or meet people who have hit a rock hard. I would say it's the main factor which distinguishes a successful trip from a potentially disastrous one. Will take a look at your other videos as well.

Agree. If you enjoy 'messing' about the boat and live close to the marina you might be able to justify the ownership, Second if you are retired and have the time its another consideration. This is a great video! I love the pros and cons of ownership! I currently don't own a boat, but perhaps one day. My dream has to always own a trawler around 40' or so and live in a marina. There are fewer and fewer marinas (in California) that allow this, not like back in the 70s. How great it must be waking up to the fresh salty air, having a nice freshly brewed cup of dark roasted coffee and hanging out on your aft deck. One day this may be a reality!
@Ocean4Life
@Ocean4Life 5 лет назад
On The Lamb waking up and enjoying a fresh brew on the aft deck is priceless. I don’t know how old you are but make sure to follow that dream one day before too late. I’d head to the marina and talk to someone living in their boat to hear how they find it. We did that before buying our last boat.

This is exactly my plan. To buy a 41-44 feet trawler (Beneteau or Nordhavn) and moore it in a marina at a popular tourist resort (e.g. Cote d’Azur or Mallorca) with lots of budget flights to be able to fly there whenever my heart pleases and to use the boat as my weekend and holiday accommodation. But I am afraid the marina fees will be prohibitively high to make this plan a reality.

This man is spot on, I charter a 46 foot once a year in the summer ,900 a day but we split it with 3 friends, i also rent a harley davidson, to go to the keywest poker run ,i don't have the time to own anything, i work for two funeral homes and have one month a year to enjoy

Thank you! I sold your Boston Whaler and joined the Freedom Boat Club (Massachusetts) It’s a good compromise. However the boats available for use are all day boats so you cannot spend the night on it.

I bought myself a new, 21' fiberglass center console fishing boat. I've had it for almost 3 years now, and he is right. Cleaning and maintaining is a chore. Storage fees aren't cheap, and he is right again that anything made for a boat is more expensive than for a car. I clean it myself and maintain it myself as much as I can... but I absolutely love ocean fishing and having my own boat is AWESOME.

If you do not plan to become sea gipsy and make a boat your home then do not buy. Charter a boat for holidays and enjoy sailing without all those rusty nasty repairs, obligations and unnecessary expenses. Summer in Croatia, winter in Caribbean, sounds good, isn’t it ?

i grew up with boats... if you are not dedicated, handy with tools and willing to fix and repair things yourself, you will obviously lose money, sanity, and even your life. Boating is for boaters, only. If you ain't boat people do not go buy a boat.

It cost me $700 US. dollars to pull my little trailer from Wisconsin to Tampa Florida, so If I want to constantly travel it will cost that much every month when nothing breaks down, not to mention the Stress of driving in heavy traffic, crowding and finding a place to park every night, you have to concentrate and be real alert all the time, It's very dangerous. How much does it cost to live on a boat every month would you say, roughly, Anybody?"
@danielshara5187
@danielshara5187 5 лет назад
Driftwood george it will cost you the slip fee. Then depending on the marina you might have to pay for power to keep your boat cool or keep your boat heated and for heating your water for your shower! You have taxes in California it's one percent of the value of your boat because it's considered real property. Then you'll have a diver to clean the bottom of your boat to keep off the barnacles. Every two weeks you'll need someone to wash your boat so that it has a nice finish! Then there is the regular maintenance which is reasonable. If you're in Florida then you have a lot of coral and barnacles that grow fast on the bottom of your boat so you need to put a good bottom anti-fowl copper bottom paint

Being a boat owner is awesome, I have access to so many places a car can never reach. I boat on the Trent Severn waterway in Ontario Canada, and it is quite simply the finest freshwater boating in the world. We have incredible scenery, an abundance of wildlife, warm water to swim in, locks to go through, even the world's only marine railway!!! The water is always a flat calm as the Trent is protected by land on both sides, yet you can run as fast as you please, no speed limits.

I honestly couldn't agree more. We have seen and experienced so much goodness on the western norwegian coastline because of the boat. Most friends and family don't really understand how many amazing spots we have here. Next weekend we're flying over to Ontario to stay in KW for 2 weeks. It is amazing how Ontario is so crowded with people, yet there is great nature available. Your point about money: Agreed! You don't buy a boat because it is a smart financial move, you're choosing a lifestyle. But the reality for most of us is that we can't afford everything in life, so we must make priorities. For those not 110% dedicated I'd say owning a fairly large boat may not be the best way to spend their money. For me, I wouldn't mind selling the house and moving onboard permanently :-)
@rboddington
@rboddington 5 лет назад
The vast bulk of Ontario is still nature in fact, the population is packed into the Southern tip, the massive Northern part is still empty. I have been to Norway last October, stayed on the coast and even hiked to the Pulpit Rock with my friend. Really great country. Look if you want to go on the Trent Severn run with me while you're here, email me at rdcboddington@yahoo.com happy to take you out. I even made a boat eye view of the run: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YstvUEnJMw0.html

@@rboddington holy crap that's a large body of freshwater! I'd love to come along, but the family has a packed schedule for the 2 weeks ... they would murder me :-) I can't believe I lived almost 5 years in the kw region and still didn't go out exploring that great scenery you captured in your video. Seems like Ontario has a lot more to offer than I knew about!!

been sailing since age 13, a boat builder most of my life what you say is right, IMO unless you are wealthy OR you can do all your own maintenance, then forget it buy a boat that steams displacement speeds, easily driven slippery hull shape, buy enough horsepower for your needs not more, if you are going up swiftly running rivers such as Rheine, Danube, you,ll need a nine knots capable boat just to buck the stream, what you seek if sea miles per gallon of fuel, most planing boats are poorly equipped to plane in rough head seas, because the vee fwds is too shallow and the boat pounds badly, you come off of plane and burn fuel, so if you buy a planing boat it should have vee at station two 40 plus degrees deadrise, then you can power on and wave jump with very soft landings, unfortunately instead of looking at the boat bottom, buyers look at the curtains yes the joy of being on the water is great, my advice, use a friends boat, help with fuel costs:}}
@Ocean4Life
@Ocean4Life 5 лет назад
stuarth43 what you say about people looking more at the curtains than technical stuff is so true. Going to boat shows these days many companies seems to focus more on design expression and pillows than what really matters. On the ocean practicality always beats beauty:-)

I love my boat and I've got a couple of them and I just subscribed I just found you thanks for the advice but I love my boat and I'm going to keep them you know what most people should just try a small aluminum basic boat to start out with get one with a 5 horsepower about 12 feet long the basic that you but most people needs for fishing and stuff like that on and I almost fitting like something like that then you got to get a bigger I drink one and see if I really like it and go from there I don't know if you mention that I didn't hear you but also storage sometimes you cannot keep your boat at your house it can get very expensive and I might be off cost if you rent a storage so you might just think of anyone a lot to
@Ocean4Life
@Ocean4Life 5 лет назад
you're right about starting out small. If you really enjoy being on the water then that joy will be there even in a small 12 foot boat. The scenery, ocean scent, fish ... it's not any nicer in a 40 footer. But having a boat with the beds always made and all your stuff ready is very comfortable and convenient, but it cost $
