I'm Irish born and bred. Could not consider living anywhere else in the world. I'm biased and proud of it. There is a magic in Ireland...its in the air..water..rain and soil and its in the people. When you really get that magic..you really get it in your heart then Ireland has gotten your soul and you will love living here.

I would get a few goats for your new homestead , they produce healthy milk which prevents inflammatory diseases of colitis and irritable bowel syndrome , Goats milk also prevents insulin resistance and also fixes iron and magnesium deficiency which prevents anemia .... and Goats are totally beautiful intelligent creatures... I hope Ireland works out Good luck too !!!

We have goats and yes their milk is more wholesome and more digestible for many people than cow milk. They are excellent for clearing overgrown land, and they are the cutest "kid" animals you will ever see as they prance about non-stop all day, filling our hearts with joy. The down-side - and there's always one! - is that goats will always find a way to break through any fence so from time to time you will have to return them to their allotted field.

Congratulations on your house! Such good news. And I'm totally with you on the organic food and raw milk. Fortunately here in Norfolk, there is a raw milk place 12 minutes drive from our house. There's also a gorgeous farm near Norwich which we used to get it from when we lived down that way. They keep their calves with the mums for a while after so I love their values and approach, too. Watching you guys is like watching us when we moved (briefly) to Europe - always chasing organic food ;)

They'll tell you 😉 I'm sure you've probably discovered that food in Cork is of a high standard, not the variety of Dublin but there are excellent food producers, from Hedermans Smoked Mackeral to Gubbeen cheese and bacon to the Toondairy Mozzarella, there's definitely a space for good food producers.

You haven’t told us what size property you are looking for and your budget . I might know a place which might suit that’s coming on the market soon here in the west of Ireland.

You must be willing to change EVERYTHING in your life. You must know that you and your family will be completely unrecognizable within three years - and be prepared for that. You are entering a new world, and you must be willing to let go of all your preconceived notions about what “life in ireland” will be like. This is not an easy place - it does not function in ways you think it should. There will be days when you will shriek in frustration, days that you will question every single decision you’ve ever made - and marvel at the discrepancies between what you THOUGHT and what actually IS. My husband and I bought a derelict schoolhouse in Leitrim without ever seeing it - 8 years ago. We were in our 60’s, and moved from NYC where we had lived our lives up to then - into a construction site in the middle of a soggy field. Yeah. NYC to rural northwestern ireland. If we can do it. You can too. Best of all great good luck to you and your family in your new home - may it bring you joy. We are happy as clams, and regret nothing - but we are NOT the same people who tumbled off that plane…. Buckle up. It’s going to be a wild ride. Happy to help with sourcing construction materials, advice or just a sympathetic ear - don’t hesitate to ask.

@@lavignemorte - I hear you. It’s not for everyone, and that’s the truth. People arrive in ireland full of propaganda which has been fed to them by all those American movies. The Quiet Man is a FANTASY - and if you come looking for that quaint little cottage with the thatch - you need to understand this. Life here is very physical. Dragging a fifty pound sack of coal from the car into the house, is not easy - but if you are cold - you must manage it. When things break - get yourself onto RU-vid and figure out how to fix it - nobody is coming to help. Our motto here is “Shit’s Heavy. Nobody’s coming.” The lack of tradespeople is something you could never imagine, and finding somebody to work on your septic tank? Forget about it. I’ve bought parts and repaired my oven, my washing machine, my dryer, the toilet, the kitchen sink, - and our septic system. It must be lovely to leave some of this behind you - and I hope that you are loving your new life in France!

@janechamblesswright119 I love your humour. We lived not a stones through from Cong in a hamlet aptly called Castletown. lol. It was hard, harder than we expected because my Mum was Irish and I grew up there in Co Wexford until I was 16 so I did not anticipate how hard it would be. We were lucky because we had a fabulous builder who did 3 projects for us over the 7 years we were in Mayo. We have no regrets however.

@@janechamblesswright119that depends where you go. West Cork is beautiful and has great communities that I’m sure will help these guys. It is expensive but if you’re homesteading it then you’d expect to be handy with tools and diy projects. If they want a self sufficient small farm then there will be plenty that will be happy to advise them.

This might sound odd, but that's kind of exactly what we're after. We want the physical life. Convenience has made people too soft (us included!). Laughing at that motto - kind of thing my hubby will love. And we're absolute figure-it-outers so we're kind of embracing that!

Many reasons why Ireland! We just fell in love with the place quite simply. But yes as @complexthoughts2621 notes, it's almost impossible to buy a house with land without actual millions where we're from in the UK. But prices aside I'd choose Ireland anyway!!

I live there. I earn 120k a year. Pay 60k in tax and get no benefits for that. 3.5k for health insurance. Car insurance is 600 euros. My car is 25% more to but than equivalent in the UK. Everything is really expensive. People are narky because they are under pressure. If the weather was good, I wouldn't care about all of this. But it isn't......
