Buying a Foxbody Ford Mustang 5.0 and wondering which model - Notchback (Coupe), Hatchback, GT, or Convertible to buy and why? In this video I provide a bit of a history lesson from my perspective being a long time Fox body coupe owner (23 years), and also provide my thoughts on which one I think you should buy.
The Foxbody mustang is a car with a VERY loyal following. For many current owners - and wannabe owners - it was our high school hotrod! Therefore we have a very special place in our hearts for these cars and love telling stories and talking about them.
Speaking of stories, if you are interested in learning more about how I bought my Foxbody mustang, you can watch that video here: • I'll Trade you my Foxb...

And finally, if you just like listening to the awesome sounds of the Foxbody Mustang, you're going to love this!: • Fox Body 5.0 Mustang E...
I have owned this emerald green 1992 fox body Mustang LX notchback since I was 17 years old. The car is still the original emerald green paint/colour from 1992. 3 years ago I decided to rebuild the motor and add a little power with various bolt on parts.
A big thanks to late model restoration, CJ Pony parts, and American Muscle for helping me find many of the parts needed. Also a special thank you to:
Flowmaster
BBK Performance
Ford Performance
AFR
and many many more.

Always been, still am, a fan of the hatch back, particularly, the GT. As you say, it doesn't matter "which" one it is, I love them all. If you're out driving a fox, you'll get the looks and will always get a thumbs up from me.

The LX Foxes were always the sleepers. Plus, I heard you can only put cobra bumpers on the lx not the GT. Seems like everyone is doing that today, no one thought of that in the 90s. Should have got a Cobra R or 1 the 1st Cobras

I own an 89GT that I bought in 1990. I had this car at the height of its popularity and you could find one at every intersection. I'm grateful that I never did any hack mods to it and it's basically stock with the exception of your typical bolt-ons. I've recently reignited my love for my old foxbody and I'm in the process of restoring it to its former glory. I actually have a 91 LX convertible in Jewel Green that is super clean with all the bolt-ons. Great video.

Pick the one you prefer. It's simple. Back when these cars were new, I don't remember seeing "Notchback" being used. They are two door sedans given the framed doors, etc. I rarely saw an 8 cylinder one even when these cars were in production, though I knew police models were normally that style, and knew they were the lightest. I am very fortunate to, between my father and I, have the '91 Titanium Frost GT hatchback we got new on the Friday of Labor Day weekend in 1991. It wasn't driven for probably about 12-13 years until this summer, finally picked up from the mechanic on Friday if Labor Day weekend this year, and that wasn't even planned. It felt like I never stopped driving it, and was just like I remembered, but even better. It has such character and is, as so often said, really fun to drive. Our car had solely mechanical upgrades done years ago that worked out very well, as they didn't make the car lose it's soul...they only made it shine all the more. I am glad these cars have been finally getting the recognition they are due.

I just came across your channel. That was my white 91 GT with the BBS RKs at the beginning of the video. That picture was taken the day after I completed the 5-lug swap with the BBS wheels. Like an idiot I sold the car in 2015. Sellers remorse set in around 2019 and I tried buying the car back. After investigating work I was able to track down the current owner only to find out he had totaled the car a couple weeks prior. I was totally bummed 😞 Thank you for using my old GT for your video! You have a great channel and I'm now a subscriber. 👍By the way I love both Coupes and Hatchbacks and own both.

I love the look of your old car - especially with the BBS wheels!. When I put this video together I was looking for examples of super clean GT’s to showcase and I came across these old screen shots I had taken in 2014. I’m so sorry to bring up old memories - and I’m so sorry to hear about your old car but I also want to say thank you for being so cool about letting me use that photo. I’m grateful to have noticed the car at the the time I did and also very grateful to have the opportunity to show case such a stunning example of what a proper Foxbody GT should look like 👊👊. I graduated High School in 1981and bought my first brand new Mustang in 1992 - I had a fascination with Mustangs since Hight School. It was a Calypso Green 5.0L LX hatch and I absolutely loved that car. Unfortunately, it met its early demise in the UK in 1995 - my fault. Obviously, my preference is a hatchback due to the clean lines that more closely resemble the fastback lines of the first gens and I liked the versatility of the rear hatch. I wasn't even aware that Saleen did a coupe version until you mentioned it. I think the hatch version Saleen's of the same vintage saw more magazine covers in the day. Anyway, that's just my opinion of course. If I could buy another Fox body, it would definitely be a '89 - '93 LX hatchback, because that's when they switched from 'Speed Density' to 'Mass Air' induction, with the Saleen whale tail on the rear and because that was always my favorite aesthetic mod for me. The Fox body Mustangs still stir up those emotions that I had when I bought my first Mustang in 1992 and to this day, I wish I could still have one. I currently own a Vista Blue Kenne Bell 2006 Mustang GT, that I've also owned since brand new, with too many mods to include here, and she's still in mint condition with low miles. Thanks for your videos and keep 'em coming. Sorry for the late post.

The 5.0 Coupes are rare, even back in the day. I was into the 5.0 Coupes in the late 80's. I would go to the largest Ford Dealers just to see if they had any coupes, they would have a dozen 5.0 hatch's and convertible's, but maybe only 1 or 2, 5.0 coupes. The one I kick myself for not buying, was an 89 coupe, it was a hold over from the Washington State Police, had only 100 mile on it, but because it was modified, had to sell as used for around 7700. I had no idea that is was so rare, didnt care for the blue interior, so I passed........

I saw some badass GT's out and about before I bought mine but I always liked the trunk better. More of an understated sleeper. Thanks for this..I’m pretty sure this video was inspired by our conversation...I think another argument about the coupe being a better car is that it’s stiffer and as we know the light weight...But I’m more of an aesthetic fan, I prefer a GT or ur notch with the body kit...I had a thunderbird lx in the 90s and I ordered the xenon kit for that car and back then it set it apart from the rest and got tons of compliments and questions...I may not choose to do that these days because i have a new edge but if I had a notch I definitely would and i would also install the saleen wing...

I have a garage kept 92 LX 5.0 hatch with the original Emerald Green paint that I bought from the original owner in 1995. It had 27k miles when I bought, now has 79k. The only mod it has is an upgrade to an MGW shifter I installed about 10 years ago. Always wanted up the power but had other cash priorities. The notchbacks have grown on me and I prefer them for looks but I have to say the hatch served me well for practicality years ago since I could but my mountain bike in the back with the seats down easily. Anyway, your Fox is tastefully done- really nice. Thanks for the video.

Hi Gary. Absolutely the best description of a convertible I've ever heard, "Its just a coupe with a canvas top." I'm using that from now on. I put a Cervini wing on my '91 Vert mostly because I thought the factory luggage rack,in my view, looked out of place. I mean when was the last time you saw a suitcase strapped down to the trunk of a fox convertible? I went with the Cervini wing because it's a lower profile add on and looked a lot like the wing that came on the special edition Verts from the last year of foxes. I filled in the embossed "Cervini" on the ends before I painted it just for appearance. Anyway, it's a perfect day here in the Willamette Valley and I have an irresistible urge to put the top down and go nowhere in particular. As always, thanks. Bill

White exterior black stripe up hood... With hood scoop...Interior all black....78,000 Original miles... Only thing not original are the rims.... Was told came factory with hubcaps. Years ago when I was researching I could not find one like this... Was told by the car dealer that the guy that owned it before me ordered it out... I'm thinking I might have 1 of 1.... Right from the Get-Go in '64 *Fastbacks* were the Ones. Vert Foxes DO have frame Connectors. Yes Granny's grocery getter aka notch, Always was laughed at (kinda still is) with ground effects packages added because sooo many of them came with 4 bangers. It's like looking at Little Ricers with a shiny aluminum spoiler with holes. LOL "Like putting lipstick on a pig" Notches are used now for racing because of the 300lb weight difference. So Granny unless you're goin' 405'vin with a Mountian Motor, those ground effects, Well.....lol

88 LX vert. Dark shadow blue metallic, white top. Stock interior, custom leather upholstery white with light blue inserts . Dakota gauges. Stock body no kit. Chrome ponies. Wanted to keep the stock hood but 1” rise cervini hood to address tps clearance issue. 5.0 bored to 306 to to fix scored cylinder. Top end is done, stock on the bottom. Terminator x harness. Long tube ceramic BBKs, off road x pipes to magnaflows. Dynoed 403 hp, 413 ft lbs. A repaint and suspension are on the list. Her name is Samantha (Samantha Fox was a poster girl back in the way back times. Lol). Since I was a kid I’ve loved them all, ‘64 1/2 to present day (well except for maybe the Mustang II’s 🤢. Although still a Mustang and deserves some love for keeping the brand alive through the dark ages). Imho, ‘65 fastbacks are drool worthy but Samantha’s my gal and she’s a blast. Just tripped over your channel surfing around last night. Like how you were inclusive about all the fox bodies. Sometimes the verts get dumped on. “Too heavy, noodles etc”. I believe old school people prefer hatches people that loved the cars when they were newer but nowadays younger crowds and just people newer to the foxbody scene are seeing these coupes and them being rarer and stuff like that draws a lot of attention to them they just become more desirable. People always want more what they might not be able to have if that makes sense. Personally i grew up in the 90s what made me fall in love with foxes was hatches in the 90s and just like you there in my blood its funny cause me and my hatch were both born in 92 I truly believe this car was made for me its no better feeling than having the car of your dreams thanks for the videos love your coupe too by the way wish I had my car since I was 16

Pretty much spot on I Definitely wouldn’t use a vert for anykind of track car not saying it can’t be done your just starting at more of a disadvantage with heavier car and more prone to chassis flex Personally I think the body kits have aged poorly but I can definitely see how in the 80s to mid 2000s they would be popular Especially with how car scene looked at that time

Starting with a mass air car is a real advantage. As for looks, the LX 5.0 Hatch (or 86 GT) has always been it for me. I've never liked the 87-93 GT ground effects, and I'd never own a convertible cause of the look, weight and possible body-flex. I have no problem with body mods, even the euro lights if that's what you like (I don't). Now, putting an LS/non-Ford motor in a Fox - that's a real no-no for me!

I originally wanted the '86 Mustang GT but i knew that the '87's were to have more HP so i waited. When the '87 GT came out, i thought it was the ugliest car i've ever seen. The LX 5.0 looked more like the '86 GT and so the LX 5.0 is what i wanted. I ended up with an '87 VW GTI.. Fast forward to October 1993, the GTI served well but after a year of unfixable oil leaks i was at a Ford dealer with a 5.0 GT and a 5.0 LX notchback side by side. I was deciding which one to buy. Both had the same engine, transmission and options. I knew that the LX was slightly lighter because it did not have the body effects of the GT. But during the years, the GT 5.0 slowly grew on me. Which one did it get? The GT 5.0 and i still have it today with a 347cc 650hp engine in it. In my eyes, the 5.0 GT had that something the LX 5.0 didn't. I think it was the once I considered ugly body effects that compelled me to buy the GT.

i think the notchback with a body kit is pretty clean. I'm not sure why everyone in the foxbody game is so judgmental as if they should be the deciders of what others do to their vehicles. Please can this community as a whole just be open to the idea that some people just want these cars and want to personalize them to their own likings and not everyone elses because what's the point of restoring and modifying these cars if you want each and every one to be up to the same standard. I love originality as much as the next guy and would keep my foxbody as close to original as possible but I think if someone else enjoys aftermarket parts and mods, then wonderful.

But I will put my $ on a 90's Cadillac eldorado with the 4.9 engine, bone stock,on a rolling start against any bone stock mustang from the 80's to early 90's. Mind you it's not too quick coming out of the hole but on a rolling start it's pretty nasty.

Im a GM fan but not too picky unless it's a 4 door, which in that case the cadillac brougham is my favorite 4 door of all time. To me a car has gotta have good lines, and the right color for you to enjoy it. If a car rides and handles well and you enjoy driving it,by all means hold on to it. I like 60's and 70's gm cars and truck but occasional I see a ford that I like and wanna own!

ill be the first to say i do not like full body kits on fox mustangs, yes even the factory GTs, i like front air dam bumper covers, especially the pre 87 factory ones, like the 79 pace car, 82 GT, 84-86 gt, and the 83-86 capri RS. I also cant stand 87-93 ugly cheese grater GT tail lights either. i didnt like them when they debuted summer of 86 so this isnt new for me. what is new is the very recent gaga phenom of overpriced coupes due to a fad like boost in popularity as of late. i think over time this will pass and the prices between hatches and coupes will re align. hatches\fastbacks have always been more desirable than coupes since the mustang debuted in 1964 1\2. there are much more rarer fox mustangs \ capris out there that arent getting their due. Shelby would have never used a coupe, he never did, the only variation from the fastback mustang was the shelby maverick sold in mexico, and those were fastback only. Foose also likes two tone paint jobs on everything, yuck.
