Honestly, if you already own an Apple Silicon machine, you're good. If you want to upgrade M3 is most likely not for you. Most people should just find M2 and M1 Macs with a good discount.

I’ve had my M1 MacBook Air for the past two years now (mainly used for school/email/web browsing/Microsoft office/some gaming) and it does everything I need it to do flawlessly and then some. I see no need to upgrade my machine for several years, M1 is fantastic already.

You could do those things you’re doing on a 2009 MacBook Pro. Unless you move into Audio/video editing … for this use case you didn’t “need” the M1

There is a very important point that all (and I mean it - all) reviewers do not take into account when they recommend buying and older model. Let's be honest here - you don't splash 3500-4000 euro (for a Pro machine here in Europe, not even a Max which can cost you about 5000-6000 easily) and then use it for 2 years. When you spend such amount of money, most of the users expect to use it at least 4-5 years and even 6-7 years like myself. In this case a very, VERY important factor is longevity of support. Apple usually support their laptops with about 5 years of OS and software updates. Losing one year of this by buying last years model (doesn't mentioning losing 2 years) just to save 300-400 Euro is not worth it in absolutely any way, imo. So does it worth upgrading from M1 to M3 - probably not at all. Does it worth buying the latest model when coming from a PC or an Intel Mac - firmly and most certainly yes for me.
@CreatedTech
@CreatedTech 6 месяцев назад
Actually I mention this in quite a few videos, but it sounds like I'm beating a dead horse by continuously bringing it up! While your point is true, the savings of an older model vs brand new almost always outweighs the negatives of 1-2 less years of support. Take the two examples in this video - a 14" M2 Pro MacBook (early 2023) is $400 USD cheaper than a M3 Pro MacBook (late 2023). They will get the exact same support timeline. Or, a (late) 2021 M1 Max for 50% cheaper than a 2023 M3 Max. Realistically there's only about an 18 month difference between the two, which is negligible for support timelines. All of this is assuming Apple silicon gets the same 7 year support timeline as the Intel Macs. My opinion is that it will likely be longer, but that's up to Apple.
@alunelu111
@alunelu111 6 месяцев назад
In my opinion, choosing the 14" / 16" M3 Pro with a 12-core CPU, 18-core GPU, and 36 GB RAM doesn't seem like a mistake. The hype typically surrounds the Max, but some users might opt for it just to browse the web and perform tasks where they won't notice any significant difference between the Pro and Max - simply to have the latest and greatest.
@Wayne-sn6qy

i think the biggest advantage of M3 series, especially M3 max, is power efficiency improved. You can tell from the test of Macbook Pro 14 M3 Max by Notebookcheck. Now it is getting even a higher battery life than the M1 Max 16inch model in regular tasks. That is a huge difference for those who want a Max chip in 14inch body.

I found a deal for a 14 inch Macbook M1 Pro MAX chip for $2499. **10 core Cpu / 32 core Gpu - 64Gb Ram - 2Tb** With tax its about $2700, is it that the best price I'd ever find? I'd prefer not to spend that much, so I was wondering if it make sense to get a Macbook M1 pro **10 core Cpu / 16 core Gpu - 16Gb Ram +1Tb - 1349.00** and in a few years see if I need an upgrade. Let's face it, it struggle!s with Lightroom now and Da Vinci Resolve is sluggish but otherwise all it's doing is Office and web and it handles that smoothly It's time to upgrad and what am I going to do? An M3 Pro MacBook Pro at AU$3,499 seems about right as it's more powerful than I'll need for at least the next 2-3 years but I'll keep it for many years. Question: Instead of buying an M3 Pro 16" 12CPU 18GPU 18GB 512GB SSD, would be ok to buy an M1 Pro 16" 10CPU 16GPU 16GB 512GB SSD? I love the black colour but I try to think efficiently not esthetically and to get the real value for the bucks. The prices in Romania are higher, the price for the M3 16" is €3000 and the M1 is €2000. For me looks like the same. I am a web developer and I am not doing any crazy video editing or fancy stuff. I have a Mac Mini M2 Pro 16GB 512GB, ($1299 US), and I am very happy, works fine for me. I think for the job I do I need a minimum of 16GB RAM, never tried an 8GB RAM Mac. FYI Blender 4.0 is no longer in beta and the Ray Tracing ability is pretty stellar in Blender. Imagine getting the rendering speed of RTX 3070 or possibly 3080 but without being capped off at 8gigs of VRAM (speaking of M3 Max). No more running out of memory when rendering large files. Additionally, all this without having to be plugged in all the time. But I definitely see your point. If you’re not really doing high end rendering though I don’t think you will notice much of a difference in your daily workflow, at least not enough to merit the huge price tags.

Most of us who has a M1 or M2 generation should only upgrade if we have needs that cannot be meet with our current computer, and even then our needs would most likely be meet by a higher spec version of an m1 or m2 processor like going from the m1 to the M1 Pro or M1 Pro to the M1 Max. You will most likely need to work with AI or 3D for the m3 to be considerably better than a similar spec m1 or m2. Most of us don't

Recall that M1 Max has a GPU scaling issue which was fixed in M2 Max so perhaps for some it is worth waiting for discounts on an M2 Max machine which are similar to those which are currently offered on an M1 Max machine. If you were looking to buy your very first MacBook Pro in like May of 2024 so like over 6 months from now, would you still recommend the M1 Pro or M2 Pro or at that point would you recommend getting the M3 Pro refurbished at that point? May of 2024 is my current time line that I am looking at & at that point the M2 Pro will already be over 15 months old & I would be keeping my MacBook Pro for at least 5 years or more & I don't think that buying a machine with a chip that as of May 2024 will already be over 15 months old. 7 months old as the M3 Pro will be by then, I can live with & justify that, but considering that I get & keep my tech for as long as possible, I don't feel that it would be prudent in my case to get a computer with a chip that is 15 months old when I buy the machine. In this case the M3 Pro is choice based on a few key things. 1. Battery life is better optimised 2. CPU speed 3. Read/write speed 4. Longevity (as the most current I can use this for the 7 years with maybe one battery replacement and OS support). I’m coming from an extremely powerful iMac for my needs but Silicon has been a huge leap that lost me a few years on this machine.

Several points: 1/ Outside the US, the refurb market barely exists as we do not have a 30-day return policy, so there are few refurbs, if any, for many models. 2/ Secondhand/refurbs look great value when a new Mac is released, but within six months that value differential reduces as we see lower supply of M2/M1 refurbs and M3 refurbs enter the equation. 3/ We are still determining the OS support for M1 and M2. It is within the bounds of possibility that all M1 chips, now being three years old (M1 base), may now only have three more macOS upgrades. As the average Mac user keeps their Mac for six years (why Apple gives that length of support), this may end up disappointing. So I could not recommend it. The M2 is likely to have more than one year less macOS support. 4/ New tech means improvements. They may not be apparent, but a year is a long time in a new chipset like Apple Silicon. The M3 has many advantages for future-proofing over the M1, from superior GPU hardware to a faster neural engine, more efficient and faster RAM, and better efficiency. This is worth taking into account.

Imo these new macs are only for 3d artists and game developers. Every Mac is already good enough for editing but Apple lacked more in those 2 areas with the previous SoCs. It is also true that softwares take a long time to take advantage of Apple Silicon but with the Apple Vision coming out soon companies should consider Apple more. Just the fact that Epic Games gave native support of UE5 to Apple after their beef is huge, and every update is also providing more support for Apple; now Raytracing will be a game changer in that software.

I went from a 2011 mbp to a base model m1 air and was blown away. Realised that 8gb wasn’t quite enough (now I had more power I wanted to use it for video editing etc) then got a base M1 Pro 14. Every time I open that machine I’m simply amazed. I’ll have the M1 Pro 14 for at least 5 years

I agree… from all I heard, the Black Friday M1 Deals were “gud enuff” to upgrade from my 2018 (intel) which BRICKED on the last OS upgrade… Apple replaced the machine when I had a recorded all to Apple Support telling me I was “good to go” BEFORE it was BRICKED! 🤬 So - stuck with a machine I could no longer upgrade (either the OS or FCPX) - it was New MacBook or get OUT of the Apple EGOsysten and move over to Asus Windows… One more chance - and I don’t wanna start from scratch with Da Vinci with a big project coming up- and the M1 (for a thousand bucks less) sounds like a good place to start over… And I don’t need an M2 or M3 to cut and color grade 4K and process audio with a bunch of plugins

I want to upgrade my Macbook M1 Pro, 32GB and 2TB cause Apple makes their products advertising so attractive. I also have an Mac Studio M2 max with 64gb with 2TB. Even with this I still feel the need to upgrade even though I do no video work or game development. Apple are geniuses at making each new product release seem your existing models are Dinosaurs. NOT falling for it this time Apple!

I help an older group of friends with their Apple devices. Most are on Intel machines. I feel most should upgrade when their intel machines are no longer getting OS and security updates. People are moving to Apple Silicon steadily. You go to coffee shops and about half the People working are unplugged and it looks like they have Apple Silicon machines. The other half are older Macs or Windows Machines and all are always trying to sit near a plug. Reviewers are always getting new machines. I think Apple should be targeting intel chip users. Many of my friends are also using iPhones that are no longer get OS and security updates. I think there is a large market for new devices.

They weren't sitting in storage for months, that's a crock of shit. They're barely able to produce them, TSMC is the bottleneck. And there are no M4s in storage. Apple arguably jumped the gun on the wrong 3nm process because they didn't want to wait for the refinement next year which will allow them to do M4s.

Ironically, it seems the base M3 Max is probably the best "value", if you can really say that about a £3k laptop... -- so I have the Macbook Pro 13" M1 16GB (2020), still works perfectly well, but my business partner is still on Intel. So I thought I'll get the M3 and give him my M1. But the base M3 is garbage, once you upgrade Ram/Storage, you may as well go to Pro for just a little bit extra. But on Pro, you're only getting 5 P-cores (the 6 E-cores are a joke, in total they take up less space on the SOC than a single real core, they don't count), but once you upgrade the CPU/Ram/Space, you're only £400 away from the Max and that has double the P-cores and more than double the GPU cores - literally twice as fast for my workload, argh! - So I ended up spending way too much on an M3 Max 14/30 1TB 14" - what a machine though 🤣

M3 did not achieve the expected efficiency and thermal improvement at 3nm. Furthermore, the speed is unsustainable at marketed 4ghz. It’s overhyped. Wait for next few generation.

On one hand, you post videos with unsubstantiated rumors about Apple's amazing/insane future products, and on the other hand, you're warning users about how poor an upgrade option they are. That all makes me more think these videos are most importantly about sensationalism and clicks...

I'm waiting for Apple to start software blocking their M chips. I guarantee that in 3 years we'll start seeing software blocks on M1 chips. It'll be unnecessary. M1 chips should last a long time, but Apple won't stand for that. They'll be sure to slow your chip down, force battery life to die faster, and lock you out of "features". The only apple product that should software block any time soon is the augmented reality. The M chip line shouldn't degrade for a long time but the reality is they'll force it... Love Apple but it's what they do.

I got my M1 MacBook Air just before the "Scary Fast" M3 announcement. I didn't get an M2 MacBook Air because it doesn't even LOOK like a MacBook Air. Yeah, I'm upgrading from a Core i5 "Ivy Bridge" 13" MacBook Pro, so this "new" Air is plenty fast. I heard this M3 was supposed to be head-and-shoulders faster than the M2, but it's not quite that. I'm told it's because we're getting early production M3s. The M3 hasn't completely stretched its legs yet. I can cool my jets for a while. Let me know when they come out with the M5 or M6.
