@@angelmontero6022 hey buddy, That's a good list.. i also have door lock problems. How did you fix them? Did you get Mercedes actuator or universal actuators? Also did you ever have ignition key problems? Just curious..
@@Menga213 bro im in the shop as we speak and its literally a few feet from me. still waiting some time or paid time like a down payment for it to finish repairs. i kinda gave up on the locking issue simply because some friend who specialized on german engineering was going to but never got to since by then i had switched dailies. thats the main reason i never fixed the panels permanently rather than just jerry rigging. yes my key got fractured and one day the dang key broke inside but i used a magnet to pull it out but 1st spayed and let dry with WD. key smith charged me 150$ for just the key. had a mini slot on the side where i had to swap transponder chip. if u have a basic copy with no slot u can just tape or hold transponder chip to the concave bowl side as you turn the key to turn on. might have to tape it cuz i cant recall if the car has constant cummunication with it and if it doesn't detect it ittle shut off
@@angelmontero6022 Damm. That's wild so i saw a Tumbler on ebay and oem for like $60 but I don't know if they need to be program or coded. When i had a w210 my key also broke Super headache. I use to start the car with a screwdriver. But i am trying avoid a broken situation. So i was wondering? How to get a economical tumbler. My door cylinder seem sketchy when i insert the Key they are not smooth. I wonder if you had that problem? About the doors locks actuator.. I was reading that you can use a universal door actuator. You just need to rewired the actuator. They are like $17. I think i will give it a try. I will order some... So are you using a metal key right now.. What year is your w163?
If you know how to work on these cars it can save you thousands and you still have a reliable car for price they cost today. I did alot of work on these suvs and i highly recommend replacing all of the pulleys + belt and as many pumps on the engine as possible. Spark plug coil packs will crap out causing misfiring, if door locks are machine gun clicking just pull the relay in the fuse box, also a highly recommended part to is the transmission conductor plate the O-rings can fail and oil will get on metal connectors causing a limp mode to accure. Comment any questions
laurendinick wow dood your are right on I have a ml350 05 just hit 130k and it’s doing the misfire limp mode and it does have a bad leak which I bet caused it
To be fair most of the "problems" listed in this vid are things that can potentially fail on any modern car. They are great cars if they have been properly looked after, and are extremely durable, and very luxurious compared to most other suvs , Agree its sensible to stay away from pre-2002 cars though, the quality improved greatly from around 02.
Generally speaking you may be right , but I am only referring to the first generation MERCEDES ML (W163) these were vastly better cars after 2002, as early design problems and quality issues were mainly resolved.
2000 mercedes ml430 245k mi one of the best car i been drive! the worse was in it is the oil leak from the housing oil filter $15 bucks 1/2hr labor and ready to go. :) the suv still enjoy the highways!!
This is a really good car. You will never replace suspension parts on this car.....the only issue is rust....I have one with 260k miles and I've never had to do work on the suspension and the ride is still very good.....It's a very reliable car... extremely reliable.....I've had a lot of cars but this is one of the best cars I've ever had.
I have owned a 2002 270 CDI since new. It's done over 180k miles. It's been very good with frequent trips from UK to the Alps proving it has a decent blend of motorway refinement and snow/off road ability (considering how old the design is). Weak points on mine are; more surface rust than I would expect (around arches, boot handle etc). Leaking diesel injectors. Bouncy castle ride on small uneven roads. Poor quality of some interior parts (seat adjusters can just break off). Apart from service items and the odd suspension bush, sensor, corroded brake pipe - which is expected based on it's age and milage, the only major expense so far has been a new alternator at about 170k miles. I can recommend them as a good allrounder if you need off and on road, just don't expect a fast car if you buy the 270 diesel :-)
I have a 1999 ML320 and it just hit 359,000 miles and I had one repair completed and that was in the year 2021.....A camshaft position sensor and it cost me total repair bill was $313.00 in 22 years of driving .......The only thing I did was only using Amsoil 5W-40 fully synthetic since day one and keeping up with service ......I live in Arizona so no snow and very little moisture.......The car looks like new !
I had a 2000 ml55 in 2004. No issues at all until 2006. Hitting a deer at 90 mph was totally the car’s fault. Loved that car. So, in 2018 I bought a 2000 ml55 Renntech “Hammer”. I love it. The biggest issues are the plastic. No major issues with 225k miles.
Faulty fuel pump is a big problem with the w163. The unit has the fuel level sensor outside the pump and is exposed to the fuel causing it to corrode. Therefore you get an incorrect fuel reading on the cluster console. I have gone through 4 pumps on my 2000 ML320. Another issue is the brake light switch. They ware out too quickly, in fact MBUSA sent out a recall campaign to have them replaced. Another issue, mostly for the early models is the transfer case. It has a 50/50 gearing ration and made binding and clicking sounds when turning. MBUSA refused to give owners new transfer cases. The 2000 models and later fixed that issue by changing the gearing to a 52/48 ratio. Another issue is with the transmission. There is a plastic ring with rubber o-ring that connects to the TCU which is that transmission computer module. That o ring would break and transmission fluid would leak into the computer causing a short and causing the car to stay in permanent limp mode. Always to change that o-ring when ever you do your 50k transmission fluid change. no such thing as lifetime sealed fluid!!!!
i own an 02 ml320. it had 110,000 miles on it and only 1 previous owner who dealer maintained it. 3 years and 15k miles later its still runs like it's new. oil changes every 8k. next change i'll change out the differential oil. premium gas or it will knock. one main thing to look for before buying one is rust especially in high salt areas. i've seen a lot of Mercs that look great until you shine a flashlight underneath. once the frame rots it's over.
I just got an 03 ML500 with 136,000 miles for $1,350... Now I just need to get my license. The deal was to good to pass up. I talked them down from the 1,500 they wanted. 1 owner and well kept. Just needed a serpentine belt. I think I got a great deal. Can't wait to drive it.
How tu buy an W163 ML270: Check if it has a manual gearbox Checki if there is a hock for the trailer. Make sure its the blue colour Make sure you have a car towing trailer. Congrats, you are now a typical eastern europian car importer/flipper
I have a 1998 ml 320 fr new until today. Still in mint condition and only has 140,550 kms on it. A few minor electrical problems ( window buttons) after a while but still runs perfect.
200 000 Km had my ML 270 CDI and it starts do not acelerate up than3000 RPM even steeping full throtle. No abnormal lights in the panel, no smoke, nothing else was wrong apart the 3000RPM. I take it to a workshop and there, after a few tests, they told me that the MAF sensor was malfunction. Was substituted and now it's ok.
I have one ML 270 from 2005 that I bought less than two years ago. In my oppinion is a great car, even very short time after I bought it, I saw a dark liquid under the intake manifold, dirtying the oil coller; well, it was a clearance in the axis of the small butterflies that are inside the intake manifold; the butterflies are made on plastic. Were taked off and the holes were closed with bolts and nuts and since then nothing bad happen. It runs wery well, automatic transmission, runs fast, easy to drive, precise in driving, my car counts now 140 000 km comproved by Mercedes. I think that those butterflies, wish I do not know the correct name in English, should be refer in the video because it will happen to all 270 CDI engine. dcr, very nice video. Thanks.
400,000 kms now - issues have been MAF sensor (twice), alternator, passenger airbag sensor and leaking diesel injectors - now it is overheating slightly so suspect either the radiator needs a back flush, thermostat or a fan issue. So cheap to buy but parts so expensive.
My wife car is ML400 and is a beast, guess what happened---now I drive that car every single day...for 6 years only one problem-generator failed and that's it 100$coast .....(one note-if the engine is diesel and the mass air flow senior (MAF or debitmeter)fails then you will never know about that problem because the car use like 1ltr more fuel but you have 10 or 20 h.p. more depends what engine you have 270cdi or 400cdi,,,I know that because I don't use MAF because my NOS system, when the MAF was out I have 22h.p more and that was a good surprise,,,,,,,,,and if you take off the air filter then you have 10/15h.p. more-but that isn't something good for the engine but for one drag racing will help you ....)Greetings from Bulgaria!
Thanks for the video, I am looking at a 2005 ml 270 cdi which appears to be very well looked after in the past. This video will hopefully keep me wise😂
Thanks, the MERCEDES W124 is basically an indestructible car-lots of them still riding around Morocco and northern Africa :D but maybe I will do that review in the future.
I have an ML 320 year 1999, drives wonderfully but only problem is cranking but not starting! Infuriatingly you can leave it for a hour then try again and sometimes it will start although I suspect fuel pump is at fault. I have not changed it as the motor is starting fine for last two weeks. These diagnostic tests are hit and miss and never actually prove the precise fault so I am not wasting money replacing fuel pump until it gives up 100%
MOST LIKELY YOUR CRANKCASE SENSOR - LOCATED ON THE BACK LEFT SIDE OF THE ENGINE AND FIRE WALL ON TOP OF THE TRANSMISSION HOUSING. CHEAP PART. WATCH VIDEOS ON RU-vid TO REPAIR. I CHANGED FUEL RELAY ON PASSENGER KICK PANEL AS WELL. BOTH UNDER $100
I have an opportunity to buy 1 today in grand Rapids, MI for $800.00 It's in limp mode and the transmission wont shitf out of first, thank you, RU-vid for fixing tutorials and what to check
Fuel gauge can be a problem sometimes when they are reading quarter full they are actually empty also rust around the door handles infection ⛽ pump other wise a great reliable 4x4
I have a 2000 ML320 in excellent condition , runs very nice shifts super smooth and looks great , for $2000 , has 158k is this too much miles for this car?
@@jayjohnson5016 foreal!! 800 bones damm what have you fixed? Have you change anything to it. I still got my w163, great car but my shocks are shot. The job looks nasty to perform
Looking at a 1999 ML340, only has 120000km on the clock, seems in good condition, one owner since new, all regular servicing has been done. CD and sunroof are U/S. is it worth going for it or am I buying a basket of trouble?
ML 270 CDI 2002, some issues so far: fan tempture sensor failure, Wheel Sensors that stop the car while runing, very dangerously, Power boost failure from the break pump + regular diesel maintnance issues. with 160k Kilometers only.
So im thinking to buy this car. Dont really like diesels but if I have to choose between 2,7 and 3,2, which would be easier and cheaper to maintain? I also would expect good torque, dont want a car that takes too much time to accelerate. Since this car is heavy, what would be the minimum/recommended HP to get a smooth acceleration?
Secondly, the gear transmission works fine but, when it is a neutral position it becomes stiff to now move it drive and other positions. This only happens when it is neutral position. Thanks
looking into a ML55 AMG from 2001 with 211000km. generally speaking, can I be confident to buy at a fair price and expect it to run (how long?). it's supposed to be well maintained.
Problems on my 2000 ML 500. Window motor broke. Sun Roof Broke.A/C would stop blowing cold unless you turned off the motor and reset some relay under the dash. Coolant recovery bottle broke.
Good morning, is it possible to have an ML 350 year 2005, be a special edition and a limited edition? at the same time in the same car? Muchas gracias, Saludos desde México.
Thanks for this unique information. My sister is trying to send me the 2000 model in 2020 because it's what my financial capabilities can handle. Please sir ; do you advise that I should buy it? And hope I will not regret it? This is my first car.
Hi there, I’ve been looking to buy a ml 500 2000 model and he has change the solenoids in the gear box and also serviced the gear box. Does this indicate that the gear box may cause further faults in the future ? Would appreciate your advice on this. Will also attach the description of the car so if u can let me know what u think and weather I should go for it. P.s I would have attached pics but it wouldn’t let me do it from my phone. I have a 2002 ML320...absolutely love it!! Best vehicle I have ever owned. It has over 200,000 miles on it and still runs very well. However, I have been dealing with a health issue for all of 2019. The vehicle was not driven from January to August. Finally I was able to drive it a little in late August and early September and it seemed to be fine. However, in early October it wouldn't start and I was told it needed a new starter. Got a new Bosch starter and had it installed, also put in a new Hella Starter Relay. Still wouldn't start. The diagnostics said that something is draining power from the battery. Have you ever come across this problem and what would be the solution?
Parasitic draw. You have to find out what is drawing the power. This can be a problem in any car. There are youtube videos on how to troubleshoot this. Get a voltage meter to check the voltage on the battery.
I got a ML 500 V8 Mercedes Benz SUV the problem I've got i can't find a rack pinion for it what other Mercedes is compatible for it my Mercedes Benz SUV is 2002
I bought a 2009 Mercedes ml320 bluetec with 119,000 miles for only $9k. It has an oil leak. Do you know how much to fix the leak? I live in Los Angeles, CA
Would you have any more detailed info about the ML 400 CDI? I found a really nice 2001 model, and playing with the thought to have a diesel V8. I was thinking that it is probably cheaper to maintain it than an ML500 or ML55 because the big difference in consumption, but since you said it's expensive to maintain... not sure... what do you think?
The 400 CDI is not the best choice, first of all you have 8 injectors, 2 turbochargers, various sensors - all of these things can fail and replacing them is not very cheap + after 100 000 km the timing chain tensioner starts to worn out, after 200 000 km it's good to replace the timing chain itself which starts to be worn out and there is the automatic gearbox which is usually more often worn, than in the other engines because of that big torque of this engine.
btw, will you do some Subarus? Looking at old Imprezas and Foresters... all subie lovers say they are very reliable, but well they're fans, can't believe them :D
actually, Subarus are not bad, and yes, the fans can sometimes be, well, fans :D but in this case they are usually right, so most of the petrol engines Subarus are really reliable, and they are actually quite simple cars, in other words they should run for a long time just check for rust(-on the older models) and the timing belt change intervals, of course the usual stuff like the bushings can be worn but that's normal and I would not buy a diesel engine Subaru-they had some issues with them
I found a 02 m class 320 that drives but wont go over 60....its 900 bucks i was honna reset it to factory specs with a small ccomputer hack. You think its a giod deal
That's right, almost every car maker even today says that the transmission oil is lifetime, which is bullshit. Because it's still just an oil which loses durability and quality during the years and using. So I would definitely recommend to change this oil, because you can also avoid lots of problems which are mostly caused by not changing the transmission oil.
MB officially reversed this and now recommends 40,000 mile ATF (transmission fluid) changes. This 5 speed Auto Gearbox is very reliable when maintained in this manner. Some ML's & other MBs that have this 722.6 Tranny can develop a leak at the 13 pin electrical connector, so keep an eye on it. Also, as an aside, you can also use Chrysler ATF+4 Synthetic ATF instead of the far more pricey Mercedes ATF, like $5 per quart versus $20. Chrysler put this exact Gearbox in the Jeep Grand Cherokee (they called it the "5Gtronic" but they're made in the same factory). So, save yourself some $$$ and service that Mercedes tranny yourself. Our e320 has the near identical one to our ML500 and they both get Chrysler ATF+4 changed every 30k miles - I just do a Fluid drop of 7 qts yearly & every other year do a pan drop & new Filter install. Check electrical connector for leaks & replace if leaking. Hope this helps some of you guys out. Took me a while to learn all this. But driving an MB for 10% of it's New Price, after 10 or 100k miles, makes it a fun & rewarding DIY project. Happy Motoring - God bless - David in E Texas.
I own a 2004 ML350 Mercedes & im in Spartanburg Sc needing to figure out why the car acts like it does not want to pull whem mashing on the gas? Also what does it mean when you see a pair of plyers or a ranch followed by a -80 number as the car is first cranked up?
I believe the number next to the wrench indicates days past what the computer says for scheduled maintenance, I do my own work on mine and I noticed the number ticking up every day as I don't reset it because I don't have the equipment to do so. If anyone knows better feel free to correct me.
actually i think the pairing of Chrysler was the best thing for us owners. Both companies shared the same transmission 722.6 model and chrysler used that exact same model on their jeep cherokees. Therefore getting a rebuilt one or slightly used one now today in 2017 is fairly easy to come by and cheap!
@@cyronader Yes Sir great point. You can also use Mopar/Chrysler spec ATF+4, full Synthetic and can be had widely & cheaply from $4.50 / qt and same exact fluid spec as MB $20 / qt . 722.6 / 5-Gtronic is a great trans...
my 200 ml320 has a bad secondary air pump. i hear that is a common issue and rather expensive to fix. so far my plan is to send the ecu off to have someone write the code out for the pump rather than replacing it with a new $800 pump that does next to nothing for the overall performance. anyone agree or have a comment to add please do.
I noticed something like this when my fob went out. If I had locked the car with the button on the inside while the driver door was open it wouldn't lock it, but if I used the passenger side door(having driver door closed) it would lock all doors. I assume it is designed to help people not lock their keys in the car(requiring you to use the key to lock it).
Michal Hantl They do look very similar but believe me the specs will be a lot different. The w163 uses a wheel with a high offset that sits in the arch, the slk has a lot lower offset. also the w163 has m14 wheel bolts and the slk m12. So the actual size of the holes will be different. PCD and centre bore will be the same though

was it only the problem that it was towing the trailer all the time, or it's just a shit car? Asking cause I found a really nice ML400, and would love to have a V8 with less consumption than the ML55 :D
