Welcome to Chasing Latitudes! Have you ever imagined the smell of the ocean air as your boat crashes through the waves? The freedom that comes from casting off the bow lines and heading out to sea to explore new places you can’t reach by car or airplane? Then this channel is for you.
You will not see white sand beaches here, restaurant reviews, beach parties, selfies or Japanese knives. What you will find is factual information based on decades of sailing experience.
My channel is specifically meant for one thing and one thing only, to help YOU find your new to you fancy-dancy yacht of your dreams and get on the water in the fastest, most time efficient manner.
Don’t get caught up in looking at old boats! I focus on mostly newer vessels, built in 2000 or later because I want you to spend as much of your time as possible sailing, not practicing your restoration skills on an old boat attempting to bring it to its former glory.
You want to take advantage of the amazing newer technology and modern hull designs when it comes to sailing. This is going to make your vessel far easier to sail solol or short handed and make them far more comfortable and efficient to live aboard full time or even just weekenders without buying more boat than you need.
I offer a wide variety of services including consulting where I will take you through the entire process of how to budget properly, choosing what vessel size will work for your needs, what type of vessel, I will help you shop for vessels, determine offer prices, schedule surveys, talk with brokers, teach you how to do your own pre-survey, walk you through hiring the correct surveyor and help you avoid all of the common pitfalls that you will find when purchasing used sailing vessels.
The consulting does not stop there, I will be with you every step of the way and long after you have purchased your vessel as consulting also comes with lifetime access to the members area,.
Chasing Latitudes hosts a large, active private members area where the members are more than happy to offer their own experience to solve problems, host private videos for ASA Sailing quizzes (ASA 101, 103, & 104), and live stream videos which feature anything from member cruising to boat shopping, boat comparisons, and other live content with chat from the subscribers to my RU-vid channel and channel members.
It’s time for YOU to get on the water. Come aboard!

I’m in BC.Canada and looking through the ads for vessels around 36 to 42’ long I noticed some big differences in price in different geographic locations. Then started looking at the detailed specifications of each boat offered. This partly explained the differences in prices. For example a Jeanneau 419 in the Carribean…former charter boat is very inexpensive compared with A similar vessel in Vancouver BC. But…the Carribean boat has a shallow draft keel, and no cabin heat. The Vancouver vessel has a deep keel (better performance?) and cabin heat. Can you do a video exploring these issues?

I live in the great lakes. Lots of old boats for cheap. Old cheap boats that I would not sail around the world. I bought a C&C 43 Landfall 7k got captains license. It was a nice boat but small for large family. I didn't trust it to sail Superior. I put 7000$ into it. I did get my money back and some for labor. Made more off fixing and selling the boat slip. Like living in a rv full time with nowhere to get out of it at. It better be nice and comfortable. Having mutinous crew is never good.

Hi Chris. My own boat deal just fell through for an interesting reason that I thought might help people here if I mentioned it. The boat I found was pretty much perfect in every way. Amazing quality, it's been kept immaculately, private owner, price not low but decent for the year, tons of gear and accessories with it, spotless engine, new RIB and Rib Motor. etc. It sailed beautifully. I had it pulled out of the water and surveyed and the survey came back with flying colors. But there was one thing that showed up on the survey that took me aback. It's age. It had been advertised on Yacht World as a 2017, and all through the process of negotiation and survey etc. I was led to believe it was a 2017. But on the Survey it said "Date of Manufacture 2013". When I questioned this there was an entire story about the Hull being built in 2013 the Engine in 2015, assembled in 2016 and the boat was first registered in 2017 so they said it was a 2017 boat. But the surveyor and everyone else I've talk to about this says no... it's a 2013 model boat and that affects its market value dramatically. If I had bought it, instead of having a 5 year old boat as I'd been led to believe, I would be the proud owner of a 9 (very soon to be 10) year old boat. I've looked at 2013 versions of this boat now and even thought they are the same model style, they are about $35K less than this one. I'd love your thoughts on this. Is this just a scam I got caught up in? How can people find out the true age of the boat they are buying prior to going through the whole process. Maybe you'd like to do part of one of your episodes on this issue. Obviously I'm starting my search again. Tail between my legs.

That's absurd, a 2017 anything won't even have the same hull as a 2013, but it's easy just as for an image of the ce rating metal plate , will state year right on there. You just happened to have dealt with a potato. More boats are listed incorrectly than correctly. Know the model your after and ask for an image of the tag
@MoggAndrew
@MoggAndrew Год назад
@@ChasingLatitudes Actually I believe it is the same hull model. That design was new in 2013 They didn't change it till 2020. But the transom and Hull numbers don't actually state the year, just a code that you can go search with the manufacturer. I didn't check, I would never have believed they'd mislead in this way especially after the amount of time I spent with them. But lesson learned.

Great information, learned it first hand. It appears buying the vessel might be the easiest part of this process. Might have to cover marinas too.

Yeah, buying a sailboat is like buying a mobile home. Sure, its only $80k, but that's because you are still paying rent on the land it is sitting on.

Another thing usually not discussed is the price of learning. It is one thing that you bought the yacht, and I know in the states it is not required to hold any license, however, in Europe (and if you don't want to be a complete idiot elsewhere) it is strongly advised to take classes on: Navigation, maneuver training, MOB, Safety equipment, VHF, first aid on water and this is just the tip of the iceberg, and this can easily add up to 2k / person. Yeah you can learn "on the go" but do you want to risk it?

@@makisp.1428 Good question and this depends heavily on the country here, I took the RYA prices as a baseline but keep in mind, that is the golden standard when it comes to tuition here. Yes, many countries have their own thing going on with the ICC, but let me tell you, countries give you ICC even tho they don't have a freaking SEA..... HOW ARE YOU EVEN ALLOWED TO DO THAT?????

Good video. One of the benefits of buying a used boat is hopefully the prior owners left the dock lines, PFDs, fenders, boat specific spares and such behind. Of course if you're buying a beater boat, then most likely all that stuff they left behind is also in very bad shape.

A broker told me there is a year long waiting list to get a slip in Fajardo PR and that it's $615 a month so I guess I can't keep a boat there while getting used to where every thing is. Seems like the prices in the BVI's are starting to fall. Sure would be nice to find a spot to park it until I can get used to the boat and get any upgrades done. Chris@Latitudes, Do you have any tips on marina's and costs that could accommodate till I get my sea legs?

Almost free boat 30ft Irwin year ???? On a passage 5-7 days not a dry bunk on her , head---- ugh cup= #1, bucket = #2 , it did work sometimes, but these are just the beginning of the DIScomfort. Advising people to start off with a better vessel is good. $$$$$$ sell your home territory definitely.
