Back in the day, my three favorite surfboard companies were Lightening Bolt, Local Motion, & Hawaiian Island Creations...my first surfboard was a Lightening Bolt...my best friend & I each bought one a week after two of them appeared in a surfshop in NJ, seemingly out of nowhere...we both started our surfing journeys on those two boards...later on, I moved to the Big Island, & I used to surf on a Blue Hawaii surfboard...my buddy always wanted a Local Motion...so, many years later, he placed a custom order from a surfshop in Florida, & they shipped his brand new Local Motion from Hawai'i...he surfed it in Florida until he passed away @ 60 years old...later on, his brother shipped me the board to San Diego, where I now live...it's still such a beautiful board, in almost like-new condition...I loaned it to my stepdaughter's husband, because I'm not surfing much any longer (due to a health condition)...surfboards are made to ride! Aloha, Bill
I remember your dad coming in to the lm stores and the lm warehouse back in the day. He was the coolest dude and nicest person. He really was Mr local motion of California. This video brings back good memories. I’m a Lm alum 1988-2000🤙🏽🤙🏽
I Love The Respect to Local shapers, the culture, the colors of Red & yellow signifying representing Royal Ali'i (Kings & Queens of Hawaii-colors) I didn't know Tanner & his family had this connection, a Hawaiian one, reference to family friends as Uncle & aunty is Rad respect in the islands. Lovely to see this family live and honor Aloha.
So good. What a great story. Many of us have our Local Motion stories with many of the good folks featured here and this was just super refreshing and inspiring. Aloha brothers. Surfing is freedom 🤙🤙
thats epic, thanks for the comment and watching!!! appreciate the support with the videos they have been fun to make and gets me stoked when people like them too!
Local Motion on Kapiolani was the best ever surf shop. "NO KA OI" I miss that place. I just sold an 80's Rawson I had refurbished, due to medical bills. Regret it big time. I still have a '84 Minami Blue Hawaii. You know, after watching your vlog I realized the board belongs in the water. Gonna surf it. Mahalo for a cool vid!!
As a grom in the mid 80’s, my friends dad had a nice Local Motion single fin. I had a 5’10” beak nosed thruster. Flat top, full rails and I could paddle into the smallest ankle biters to a six footers. I always wondered why the early 80’s shapes didn’t come back with the retro crowd 10 to 15 years ago.
I have a 6'4" three fins bonzer with the same outline from local motion shaped by Steve Wilson. I have recently removed the hotcoat and put a thin cloth with epoxy resin. The board still works perfect
My brother has this well-loved single fin channel bottom chuck andrus board from around that same time. Would be so cool to get a replica made! Love this series!
Thanks ROB! honestly really appreciate you watching the video. I get so deep into it with the editing that I get nervous if anyone is even gonna like it! Thanks for the stoke out!
Maybe the red and white was customer colors and the red and yellow ali’i ones were just for his personal use. Kinda seems like if he asked permission to use those colors he might not want in on boards sold to anyone. Thanks for the video. Shocked me with the Gerlach reference as him being from the old school history. Gerlach? What he’s my generation . . . DING . . . oh dang I am the old school now . . . mwaaa mwaaaaaaa
@tannergud I'm a brand new surfer that started last year. My car is small and I just wanted my first midlength, and I bought a McCoy Nugget off some dude in San Clemente. I had no idea what I got until like five older guys kept coming up to me to compliment me on the board. I love how it rides as a total kook, I'm always hunting for used ones in the SoCal area!
