Welcome to Finders Keepers. This is a series meant to highlight overlooked pockets of surf culture and surfboard design through secondhand sales or trades. I have been buying used surfboards off sof craigslist for many years now and absolutely love the community of people and wide variety of boards that I find there. Finders Keepers is dedicated to sharing those stories, and riding those boards.
On this episode I come across a very special surfboard that was designed by Michael Peterson. Initially I wrestled with the fact that the board was $1,500 as that would be the most money I’ve spent on a board but ultimately take the steps to purchase the craft. The journey takes us to meet up with legendary surf photographer Tom Servais who happened to be on the other end of this craiglist purchase.
Tom has been a surf photographer within the surf world for decades and acquired this board from a surf shop on the gold coast of Australia during one of his trips there. He shares with us some great stories about getting the board, MP the surfer, and his thoughts on being a surfboard collector.
We then are posed with the question of trying to find the actual “value” of surfboards. Heading down to San Diego we check in with Eric “bird” Huffman at Bird’s Surf Shed and gain some great insight into the conversation of values and surfboards.
In the end, I take the board to lower trestles on a fun day and enjoy riding it and experience the single fin shape.
I would like to thank Justin Misch and Albe Falzon for allowing us access to Albe’s legendary MP footage from the movie “Morning of the Earth”. They have remastered the film and you can watch it here. This movie is one of the greatest motion pictures capturing the pure love for surfing.
morningoftheea...
Thank you again for supporting the Outreach, this is independent and we are having fun. We really appreciate the stoke.

Sometimes a video just sings with sincerity. This is one of them. It's a simple story, but it just really hit home with me. Great great great! Beautiful board. Great surfing!

Thanks Tom! Yeah its such a bummer not having those profiles in the magazines nowadays!! It was always a cool way to learn about how rad things from the past are and what you can take into the future. Thanks for taking the time to watch the video, that means a lot! hopefully the start of more fun things!

Really enjoyed that. I lived on the Gold Coast during MP's declining years as a surfer, but would see him out occasionally and he still evoked enormous respect from the crowd in the water. Loved the surfing too, never seen an old style single fin being surfed so successfully in a modern style. Shows that you can still get some movement out of a single, even if they're not as manoeuvrable.

Great vid! MP was my next door neighbor and surf buddy at Vland for the winter of ‘73. He shaped out of my shaping room and man, his boards were “different”. The board in the vid is the most normal board I’ve seen of his. I just hope he really did shape but I think is was just his design with his sticker on it but it may have been shaped my another MP Mark Pridmore.

Awesome vid mate.....I used to own one really similar to that, but I gave it to a good mate many years back and his house burnt down with it inside.😭 As someone who is a collector of classic boards, the only thing that made me cringe was when you put the vans sticker on it. I know you're probably obligated too, but the way UV discolours the glass and leaves the mark of an old sticker even when its removed, just ruins the integrity of the original piece of gold you found. With all that said awesome story and I loved watching. I have an almost mint condition Simon Anderson Energy single fin you're welcome to ride and make a vid on if your ever in Australia 🤙🏼

I never understood the problem w single fins.. just go "Heavy on that rear foot" .. move it back over the fin to turn, forward to pump and glide.. but you gotta have immaculate body english and know how to knife (and unknife) a rail. Tanner passes the single fin style test for sure.
