V50 with the legendary 2.4 D5 is a rare thing. Most V50s are either 2.0d or the eco 1.6d . 150K+ miles... that's only just run in for a D5. Looks like a SE LUX speck with decent colour combo. Get the windscreen checked though Matt. They are well known for de-bonding along the top edge and letting water inside. It'll explain the excessive condensation & mould found inside this V50. Volvo UK know all about this issue and if you speak to them nicely they will get it re bonded FOC, it that still has the original windscreen in place. Also being the D5 (185 PS) engine get the Aux belt & tensioner changed ASAP as they are known to snap prematurely. Volvo had a recall few years back on these and halved their service life down to 54K miles intervals. Currently there's a Volvo re call on both front seat belt anchor points... worth getting that done as well.

Thanks Matt great video. Some of these cars have problems with poor bonding of the windscreen at the factory. This is a source of water ingress. Also suspect sunroof drain holes and tubing in the A pillars. Water sloshing side to side in front of the driver is water that has leaked into a horizontal crossmember on the bulkhead beneath the screen. Volvo has a simple diy fix listed in their service manual (drill holes under the wheel arches basically). Sorry that’s long....

I have a '98 Passat estate that's been sitting for ages waiting for me to fix it, and the water ingress through door seals was a worry. Love the V50, i’ve got one myself with the D5. Common problem with the sunroof on these would be the drain tubes going down the A and B pillars. there’s like 3 or 4 different connections on each corner when the tubing can become perished and expand over time which separates the connections, which leads to rain water leaking into the cabin

@Soandsoguy
@Soandsoguy 3 года назад
The smell is the stagnant water in the floorboards. You need to leave it open on sunny day and wet vac the floors. The water is coming from the sunroof drains. You need to pull the a and c pillars and remove the old drain hoses and replace. They dry rot and clog and separate, so instead of water going into sunroof gutter then draining out the wheel wells, it only makes it part way and winds up under the carpets. I did mine in a day. There are four drain lines, one at each corner of sunroof. You don't have to remove the headliner, but it does make the job a bit easier. Don't let water via rain or car wash on the roof of the car until that is fixed or it will just keep getting worse. Vibration is cv axles, and engine mounts.

Only problem with mold is that as soon as the interior gets damp, eg people get in with wet coats in winter, the mold will start to reappear in all the seams and other nooks and crannies. You can never get rid of it and it will be even more noticeable if the car is not garaged over night.

I got my Mum to buy it as a surprise for my Dad. We still have the car- paid £2k back then and its in really good original condition. Now thats how to buy cars-get 40 years of motoring out of it and then have a car thats worth 15-20 X what you paid for it! Great vid, more please and the BATS!

Hi. Nice find. :) Sunroof- check A pillars on both sides. Pipes are getting shorter and damps all water inside car. That explains moisture Vibration. Chech driveshafts. Can be carier bearing on the right side shaft or most likely inner tripod on driveshafts gone. You need to buy complete shaft to replace. Very nice car. Bullet proof D5, automatic, beige leather, Dynaudio audio system. Well done Sir.
@jayhenry2191
@jayhenry2191 2 года назад
From one V50 driver to another- well done. A hint: the water is likely coming from the sunroof area. These cars have drain lines in the front pillars that invariably shrink and separate. If the sunroof motor has problems (also likely), just put a small bead of silicone caulk around the top edge of the sunroof. A good cheap and removable fix. Otherwise, the water will keep coming and wreak havoc with all that leather. (Been there, done that with the mold!) Best of luck with your great wagon!

I agree with MM here, leaks around sunroof may cause water to flow down under the rear seats, hence the sloshing sound Matt mentioned. Saw another Volvo where the screen leaked down the A post and ruined the computers behind the accelerator pedal, and caused rust issue.

Really nice find this, I had a T5 V50 for a bit and this has a lot of options on - has the optional Dynaudio sound system which sounds great. The sunroof is a weak point though - be sure to check the sunroof drains though they're probably blocked and you'll end up with leaks in the footwells as there's badly designed drains that go down the B pillars. And you just proved one of the reasons why the Volvo 5-port is such a legendary engine. For the vibration hard to say without driving it but check the front suspension links and ball joins as they're really weak on these cars. Luckily they're cheap to fix, it's basically a ford focus underneath (simultaneously a blessing and a curse). Check the driveshafts too they are also a common weak point - the 5 pots love to snap them especially when remapped. To anyone interested in a V50 - they are good cars but the space inside is mediocre at best, thats why I got rid of mine, boot just wasn't big enough. Best to think of this as a family hatch e.g. golf than a real proper estate car.

We bought a 2006 version of this car in 2016 on 60k, it was a 1.6 petrol Expression model so fairly basic. Gradually it developed all your usual foibles - windows that didn’t work or if they did they went up and down on their own in the rain, heater blower only worked on 4 etc. Mechanically though it was great, in the following 6 years and 80k it never missed a beat and required only routine servicing.

Hi 'Matt', tip to get rid of the mould - 'Oil of Coves' diluted 100 to 1 with water, not only does it clean the mould it kills the spores, have a look on RU-vid for more details. I used it on a VW Golf with a bad case of mould 18 months ago, it has 'not' returned. The vidbration is due to 'flats' on the tyres after sitting for 18 months. Regards, RichardA.

Vibration under load is very likely driveshafts, just had to have this done on my 2009 V50. You could watch the headlight beams bouncing on the road surface as you accelerated, since then it's been good - after ~230k miles, it probably deserved them!

Back in 2015 I did exactly the same thing. I bought a 2002 VW Golf from a client of mine. The car been sitting on their driveway for 2 years and that beautiful, almost perfect silver paint had turned grass green, interior was just like your Volvo....it was all mouldy and there was a rotting smell. I paid £400 for it, jump started it and took it to my local garage just like you did. Service, new MOT and a new set of Tyres later it was absolutely great. I also had it washed and cleaned nicely, but the smell just stayed with it..not for me..I got used to it, but for everyone else that got in the car, they could smell it. But hey, it was a difficult time in my life back then and that car did great 👍

For slightly older Volvos Joe, it's a good idea to go to a Used Volvo specialist. There are a few about. I don't know where you are, but there is guy not too far away from me who has sold used Volvos for 25 odd years - Paul Nutbrown. A search will find his site....
@RichieRouge206
@RichieRouge206 3 года назад
Having owned both, I’d always pick the V70 over the V50. The V50 is a big step up from the Focus/Mazda3 that it shared the chassis/Engines from - they don’t rust away like it’s siblings and the metalwork/body structure especially up front is much more substantial and much better steel. But the V70 of the same era was the last true Volvo before Ford stepped in. If space is a concern then the V70 is so much roomier - I struggled a lot with interior space (being 6’4”) which meant the drivers seat was very close to the rear and travelling with 3 other adults was nit comfortable

@@Brian-om2hh Agreed. Fella near me does the same - look for Seb @ SLR Motors, older single owner models that have been thoroughly maintained and are presented to a very high standard. I picked up a 2006 XC90 couple of years ago and it was immaculate.
