Check the motor stamping. They came with a 5efhe. The h being high compression. Regular 5efe came in tercels and paseos in the US (sadly we never got later starlets or sera's here) 1.5 liter is the 5e. Starlets came with a 1.3 turbo 4efte motor. Back when I was into Toyotas, we were swapping 5efhe into tercels/paseos and then turboing them. Also mr2 4age are swappable in to them with a bit of modification. that bonnet scoop and grill is from a Toyota Celica ST185 GT-Four CS edition. its function on the celica is a timing belt cooler.

Cool car for it’s time. If you are lucky, it’s a HYBRID 5e-fte. That’s an old mix of the starlet turbo head and top end with a Sera original bottom end. I had an imported starlet GT and the old ct9 is breathless, but ad an old gt25 from a 180 or Silvia and they fly!

I've only seen auto ones of these in Australia and they were glacially slow. Anything hotter than 5 degrees outside and you would bake inside them without the aircon on. Flashbacks to the 90s and 00's with that bonnet scoop. Droid kit on an MR Lancer anyone?

4EFTE for the win.... I've got that engine in a '95 Toyota Tercel (usa) engine's from a Glanza. I call it the turbcel. Not fast by today's standards but just right for the size of the car.

That center dash vent Moot thinks is from a Miata..... my 2016 Toyota Tacoma has 4 of those exact vents.... no joke looks identical down to the little round indent/dimple whatever you’d call it in the center when closed.

Saw the nose come out and was like "is it a Lancer? Is it a Subaru, no... ITS A TOTOTA SERA!" 😍🥳 As a side note guys I think this is my mates old car. It used to be like a candy maroon colour but the interior is the same. Was originally built for non other than Auto Salon and the rear was removed to accommodate a huge sound system. Hope that helps with your Automotive Archeology 👍🏻

@@RangerColinLZ It's basically that, buying wrecked cars (that'll never be quite right again) for more money than I've spent on cars and parts since I passed my driving test, 20 years ago - and I've had some 'iconic' cars along the way. Sure, I'm envious, who wouldn't love a Mclaren or the like? But I'm realistic too; I'll never own a supercar like that, let alone throw another £40k in parts at it, so I don't find it as engaging. I love the MCM cars because I feel like I could potentially own any one of them, and enjoy them for what they are, or could be. That and the MCM cars keep making an appearance, rather than being 'done' (despite them blatantly not being done) and on to the next and never spoken of again. It's less like watching a show and more like hanging out with your mates.

On the Celica GT4 the hole in the bonnet next to vent was to cool the timing belt. On this car it's to make it go faster.

1:25 Celica GT-Four ST185 GrpA/ST205 scoop 3:30 the Camry came with a 5S engine (2.2L), as did 5th and 6th gen Australian-delivered Celicas. The 5E engines (1.5L) were Starlet/Sera/Paseo/Cynos 11:02 Moog, that hole is there to cool the timing belt on the old GT-Four rally cars, as they used to overheat and snap all the shit that you didn't need to know, but nice to find out anyway. 😆👍

Metro was a mostly rebadged Suzuki Swift, which had a GTi version and a 4cyl instead of a 3 like the US had in the Metro early on. I'd love to see one on here.

@@ifluro Negative. The scoop leads directly into a little rubber duct that diverts air into the timing cover. Unfortunately on the street version, it's just for show. The alternator has its own duct that blows hot air under the car.

That engine is a 5EFE, a 5E turbo is to be taken seriously, a good 5E on forged internals is capable of 300+HP...impressive for a 1.5liter

Toyota Starlet GT Turbo ('Glanza') engine (4E-FTE) which develops 135 PS (133 bhp)...could be this 1 also 4A-GE engine (black top with map sensor) which can produce around 165 hp (123 kW).....I did notice the engine was black on top but havent gone back to see if it had the map sensor....also going off the wiki as I'm no expert on the toyota engine line :D

Ron Gray it’s definitely not a 4age.... it’s a 4efte head that’s for sure but could be a 5efhe block which is a 1.5L. Those two combined are a pretty common frankenstein build in starlets etc
