I tried rural Alaska living when I was 18 and it didn't work because I needed to work. Now I'm retired early and the only time I'll go into town is for supplies I can't hunt, grow, or make myself, like flour, spices, sugar, fuel, ammo sometimes but will mostly do reloading. I'll be as far from any civilisation I can. I plan on stocking up each town visit, enough to last for several months or even more than a year with a 5 year goal of stocking up enough for several years.

Great tips! For our northern Michigan, 40 acre deer camp with an on-grid cabin with propane heat, we paid for a water well and septic system inspection, too. That required a septic pump-out and worth every penny for peace of mind. Wells and septic are expensive to put in or replace.

In West Virginia, a lot of land has slopes, including my land. I've learned to think of ideas for how to use it to advantage. A root cellar is great. I also have a good size slope facing south, and I plan to grow 20 walnut trees and 20 pecan trees. These drop the nuts when they're ripe. On a slope, I plan to lay down tarps before nuts start dropping, and let them roll downhill and gather at the bottom. I'll take it from there. I'm a newbie -- maybe this idea will work. 😀

We’re just across the river from WV. Most of our land is steep. We’re 100% off grid and use the hill as a water tower. Water tanks sit well above the cabin. Road sits higher. We either pump water up to the tank from our rain collection, or gravity feed it from the road if we haul water. Eventually going to build a water tower for more storage and pressure.

It’s not that the skill levels of auto mechanics are getting less and less, it’s that the vehicles of today and tomorrow are getting more and more difficult to repair, plus the limited availability of replacement parts are becoming harder to get. Not to mention the thousands of dollars of specialized tools that auto mechanics have to invest in in order to repair just one vehicle. I can vouch for that, I used to be a mechanic before my near fatal motorcycle accident in November of 2020. Another mechanic and myself had to fabricate our own specialized tools to work on cars, because the tool trucks couldn’t either get there that day, or they just flat out didn’t have that tool, or they couldn’t even get that tool. So you may have to fabricate your own tools to make repairs or know someone who works with their hands. Personally, I’ll take an old Chevy any day over these newer vehicles out there. 1) they’re easier to work on, 2) most of the parts are interchangeable, 3) the replacement parts are bountiful and abundant, 4) there’s plenty of room to be able to work on them. On one particular vehicle I had to work on, I had to replace the starter. 1) there was hardly any room to get my hand in there to grab the starter, 2) there was hardly any room to get the starter out, 3) I practically had to be a contortionist to get the old starter out, and to install the new one. On other vehicles, you have to remove the intake manifold just to replace the starter, then you have to buy a gasket set to replace the intake gaskets before you can reinstall the intake manifold. That job right there, is over $1000 in parts and labor, and it takes about two hours to do it. So, fyi, get repair manuals for your particular vehicle, and then talk to auto mechanics to find out what particular parts fail more frequently on your particular vehicle. Pay attention to your vehicle services, and get minor repairs done before the onset of winter. Most vehicle breakdowns occur in the winter months, and it’s usually on those days when it’s below freezing. Sorry about my novel, but I hope this information helps you all and saves you costly repairs.

My opinion is people should not be enchanted of that house they want to buy it, they should check the neighbors before buying it or they will regret it just the Fear Thy Neighbors true stories of that show. If those neighbors are grumpy & first time you talk to them or does not open their doors you knock, they will not be there for you when you really need help.

And don’t be in areas that get snow or cold, look for an energy neutral environment for heating and cooling. Saves a huge amount of work. You then only need adequate wood lot for cooking. You also need open acreage for fodder for pigs and chickens, goats, and cows. You also need open grass and compostable plant varieties to feed your vegetable and herb gardens and orchards.

My Wife and I live in North Idaho. We rented a property right over the state line in WA. To do a rural test run before purchasing. The advice regarding sub-par and below code dwellings in rural areas is gold. Have your home inspected. Research codes. We had to make 2 moves in 100 days after a chimney fire. Rural living is very difficult and is a very big adjustment. I grew up in an urban area. It is not impossible. Nor am I dissuaded by that experience. I learned what the Lord wanted me to learn. Basic tools I needed: chainsaw, snowblower, or truck with plow and redundancy on power systems. Thanks for your videos. God Bless.

Man im 19 in California and live near major on of the major cities and im trying to figure out how to get started in prepping cause I have no faith in the politicians here to be helpful in a SHTF scenario. I was wondering if i could ask you a hypothetical question. Say if you were my age again and had no stuff to be prepared for a SHTF scenario. What would be the first thing that you would to do to get prepped the best you can and as quickly as possible? (say within the next 10 years) Thank you for this video btw. Great information here! I learned a lot of stuff.
@idahoprepper
@idahoprepper 2 месяца назад
I can tell you exactly how I did it.. first thing you need to do is get your overhead ( bill, rent etc..) as low as possible.. live out of a van or cheap RV if you need to, ( I lived out of my storage unit when I was getting started prepping) the more extreme you get in cutting your expenses the faster you will reach your goal! .. then start saving all of your money.. keeping all my money in cash, ( large bills) really helped me with saving, because it made constant impulse purchases with a debit card impossible.. you can start putting food aside at this point to if you want in the form of 5 gallon buckets with Mylar bags and oxygen absorbers if you have somewhere to store them for free.. start looking for land either on landwatch.com or or another really good method to search for real-estate is on google earth.. use keyword real estate.. that way you can establish your ideal region and area first and see what’s available for sale in that area.. target areas with visible water sources such as creaks and streams. Pro tip: southern Idaho is much cheaper than northern Idaho! When you think you’re ready to purchase land, follow the outline I laid out in this video.. once you have the land, the first thing I’d get is a steel storage container to store your preparedness gear and tools for ultimately building your home.. keep the camper or rv unit that you were living in on the property. Keep saving your money while keeping your overhead low.. this will be a process, so be patient, build your home and settle your land one small step at a time. Best thing I ever did for myself was to save money and pay for things in full! ( No Loans, No Rent, No Mortgages!) it took me less than two years to establish this goal! And I was only making around $25 - $30 an hour at the time painting houses by myself.. also, if you are married and can get your spouse to join you in accomplishing this goal, you can reach it in half the time! Hope this helps! Good luck!
