It's difficult to understand them in the anime. However the author took the consideration for Non Japanese people too and he really explains them in the Light Novel. Though it doesn't have the same effect, it's still awesome to be able to understand and laugh at them

298 from backwards can be read as 8=hachi 9=ku 2=ji. I think I read somewhere that it was just a subtle in joke from the writer with no real connection to what hachikuji is saying here tho. Regardless, if we take apart the scene with the possible knowledge that hachikuji intentionally sneaked in that sick word play, what she is implying here may have more depth than what is said on the surface level.
The creator of this show loves word and number play. In Mekaku City Actors the NEET main character's security hint is "Where do you work." While the password on his computer is a series of numbers that when read in order with their Japanese pronunciations spells out "I don't work."

Not really, Hai? Ai? Ah, hai hai. Shittemasu. However a better translation is Yes? Love? Oh I (informal)understand. I know it. One doesn't have to understand Moon Speak to understand it. Formality and puns exists in most languages, sure Chinese and Japanese has the most homophone puns. Sure Japanese has 4 forms of formality, rude informal formal and polite/very formal. But there are other languages with formality, for instance English, Swedish, French, and basically every other language. But it's not that the jokes aren't translatable it's just that the simpleness in many jokes disappear when translated even if the concept isn't broken. Take the most complex and convoluted word in Swedish, lagom, it directly translated just means just right, or just enough, however, what is just enough, what is just right? The word itself carries a lot of positive and negative connotations to such a degree that each phrase it is used in is changed in meaning, if we just used one of the regular words meaning just enough or just right, then those phrases remain neutral. Such complexity is untranslatable but the notion is translatable for each instant of use. Just like all the jokes in Monogatari series are translatable without loss, for each instant, though some information is lost. It's not a faulty translation, it's just that information density and other similar factors may change. And this comes from a person whom can't speak Japanese. I just have a basic understanding of it, I'm basically just an information magnet, however usage of said information is an action deemed pointless, if I wanted to learn something then it's easy, it's just bothersome, it's slow, especially mind altering things such as languages. When I'm thinking in English, I'm like a robot, just needlessly spouting information, but when I'm speaking my native language, I'm a poisonous snake, with a sharp tongue, I'm equally well versed in both languages. When I speak German however broken it is, I'm how do I describe it simply, lofty yet down to earth. When someone speaks a language, it changes your behavior. English is a good language for it is diverse on so many levels due to the utter diversity of the dialects and accents. The scandinavian languages only have 8 different mindsets in it, depending on formality and region. Northern, Southern, Eastern, Western, Formal, Casual, Friendly and Hostile. Let's take an example, ""Frände(Formal), Vän(Casual), Kompis(Friendly) There is no Hostile term for friend, why need one. However for lover, it's funny, ""Älskare(Formal), Vän(Friendly), Ligg(Casual/Hostile) And I fucking need to go to bed, I need to cram in 4 hours of sleep right now, 5.5 hours left till work.

Jeah, but kills the whole anime. It's tonedeaf, out of character, out of storyline, out of everything basically. On top of that it shits all over season 1. You've had sexuality as a topic multiple times and his own girlfriend was nearly raped but the anime handled the subject gracefully for once instead of exploiting it. And then they go full incest-fanservice the next season and he also starts constantly sexually harrasing a ~6 y old girl for laughs. Those two season are not even the same anime anymore.
Honestly, I love meta stuff like in monogatari. The running gag of saying how there will never be an anime, in the anime, is great. The books also have a lot of details that the anime doesn't cover. Like how when araragi asks why Oshino never lights his cigarettes, he tells him that it's because if he did, it'd be a lot harder to get an anime adaptation.
this kind of stuff is exactly why I'm going back to read the LN. that and that one video essay about Hanekawa that says her arc is much better in the LN

Everybody else thinks love is a condom or a prostitute but honestly considering this show I just think it is a god of love down on their luck selling love cheap to get on by.
The 298 is a word play 298 reversed is 892 if separated into the individual numbers in Japanese it's pronounced hachikuji and the it probably refers to hachikuji beung in love with araragi
Hilarious word play, surreal trippy imagery, complex interpersonal relationships and nonlinear character driven narrative. We each love Monogatari for at least one of these reasons. Plus they’re not afraid to break the 4th wall!
@@vinzer72frie love it or hate it it's there for a reason it's a part of koyomi's perspective he's a horny teenager and the story is largely told from his perspective. it does it with a lot more creativity and tastefulness than most anime tend to do it and it serves a purpose beyond serving fans it actually drives the narrative forward and matters for the characters. the only time i think it goes into excessive and distasteful territory is some of the scenes in onimonogatari but even then it felt like that was the point as some sort of meta commentary / parody about lolicons. one of the best and most important scenes in the series is koyomi and shinobu talking and repairing their relationship in nisemonogatari and so many people dismiss that scene just because they are taking a bath together and they can't handle the nudity. to me that scene wasn't even fanservice it was them being vulnerable and intimate with each other in every possible way which made it very beautiful. communal bathing is a common way of bonding and it isn't sexual it's something every human deserves to experience

Damn... This dialogue is way more interesting on the second watch. It foreshadows Kaiki's involvement in Nadeko's story (the stuff about money) and Nadeko's dream of becoming a mangaka, which she believes would never be fulfilled.
That's the speciality of Monogatari. It keeps backgrounds to a minimal. And frankly speaking, it's really wonderful how attractive minimal backgrounds are

Jade Face really? it took me 3 months to achieve fluency and my first language is Portuguese. I was in primary school and my parents were forced to travel to an English country so I was just inducted into the nearest primary school with no concern for language. I also have no distinct accent. then again I was suddenly surrounded by English speaking people before even becoming a teen so that might explain why I so easily learned the language. Though I must wander if I threw my self into Japan in a similar fashion while still young how long would it take for me to learn the language?
My end goal in life is to meet someone, have them mispronounce my name, tell them not to mispronounce my name and basically pull the entire Hachikuji/Araragi skit off without planning it before hand
It's the moments like this where you remember how much of a masterpiece the monogatari series was. Even with such a low budget they managed to pull off something that's so funny and subtle with extremely clever writing and jokes. You don't need amazing animation to make it a hit!
Seeing this anime make jabs at jokes in the novels brings me unbelievable joy. It's like the anime and the novels are in a constant banter with each other just like the characters. The faith to the source material just goes up and beyond my expectations.

I think this is my first scene of monogatari series that I watch as a was scrolling in RU-vid, recommendations can be a bit weird and I thought that it is a bit too surreal to be an anime given the art style but what really made me watch monogatari is renai circulation
