The local gem lord Naren King has been quietly collecting meteorites and invited me to come and check out the collection. I am a weak, weak man.

Not sure if it's Dylan's magnetic personality, his new magnetic meteor or the giant purple geode, but my period pain was cured from watching this video! :) Still feeling the pain of Leonard being too low on the horizon to view, tho... :( Happy New Year!

My imaginative and adventurous daughter suggested we go meteorite hunting. So, of course, we found ourselves walking a dry lakebed with magnets taped to the end of sticks poking each rock we encountered. We found numerous magnetic rocks but only a few are probably meteorites. We did encounter the unexpected. Remnants of an ancient civilization that hunted waterfowl when the lake was filled. Also, an entire case of badly corroded .50 caliber machine gun ammunition still in belts in a wooden case. Head stamped with the year and manufacturer, 1942. Probably kicked out if a bomber heading home for "beer-thirty ".

Never thought about buying a meteorite till recently. But I realized that meteors are the raw stuff that pre-dates anything we can see or touch on earth. I got a small piece of the Muonionalusta meteorite, which fell in Scandinavia about a million years ago. Part of a planetoid that shattered, it is dated at 4.56 billion years old (earth is 4.54), so it is older than the earth itself. It shows the Widmanstatten pattern (you showed one in your video), which takes 10 million years, minimum, to form. All mind-blowing stuff!!

Sweet! Looks like a fun place and I’d love to visit. I watched a show this past summer talking about King Tutankhamen’s dagger and thought that was unbelievably cool. I think it was a Nat geo show maybe about the new museum in Cairo. I held a meteorite once and the weight of those puppies is fun to feel while you sit there thinking about where it has been and how unbelievably old it must be. A bit random, but your boys would like watching the RU-vids where people in South Carolina find megalodon teeth in rivers - a bit different but kind of similar in the adventure aspect as finding meteorites. Your progress on earning that case of beer is looking good man 👊 happy new year 🍻 🇦🇺 🇺🇸 💥

I’m so So SO jealous that the Southern Hemisphere sees more of Leonard. But it SUCKS that you can poke it from your observatory. That Crystal Palace is now on my bucket list. We had a couple of shops like that near Santa Fe NM, one up in Taos run by a mineralogist. I have a small (wee one the size of a grape) iron nickel meteorite I got from a collector at the local flea market. Sadly, all that closed 15 y ago. This is an amazing find Dylan!!!!
