Are you looking to purchase a boat for you and your family? We were in your shoes not too long ago. It is an a fun and exciting time, getting to see lot of boats, talk to owners, meet brokers and get to see lots of different designs and layout - but it can sometimes feel overwhelming.
We are sharing what we specifically looked for in a boat in regards to having a baby onboard and what specifically we like and love about this boat.
Some of the topics we are touching on are: the sugar scoops, the child netting, the railings, boundaries that we have in place for our young toddler, Charlie.
Come along and let us know what you think and we hope this episode is useful for other families who are looking at buying or currently in the process! Happy Sailing!

I like Aluminum sailing cats. They are the safest. Let me know if you want to sell it. Just kidding. I like your boat for real, though.

Hello again from Glendale Arizona thank you very much for your video and the time it took to put it together I found it extremely informative. I'm glad you addressed the issue of the rubbies, I often wondered with people with young children on board where and how they store them till they got to a place where they could dispose of them. I do believe you and Sam are very safety conscious and your boundaries to Charlie are quite on point. Again thank you for sharing your lives with us stay safe out there and God bless

Great that the boat you chose was so well suited for a young family, to begin with. And you've put maximum effort into Charlie's safety. Protecting the Barbies too!

Thank you! Yes it's a common question we get with rubbish and where it is stored and what we do with it! Anchor locker that the smell can't get out and it's a washable locker as well with drains!

Running lines and lines to stop a child running 😂 good luck with that one kait ... 😉🧙🏼‍♂️🌌 Good runthrough .. the boat is really set up for kids and or fur babies. Theres some of my favourite designs and their rear cocpit fence lowers flat tonincrease the area but it means that theres nothing to stop a small person or a large one after a few sundowners falling or stepping of the back... It only needs screw in posts and net to just tick off that worry. Even if boat kids learn to swim or float ASAP. Ending up in the water with some of the local wildlife arround isnt what you really want. The other problem is if you get a sleepwalker. 🤔 But youve got locks .
@sailingwiththejamess
@sailingwiththejamess 3 месяца назад
Yes the sleepwalker thing worried us, if she got up in the night, so we installed the second lock on the main door. Yes don't want them ending up in the water with local wildlife here 🐊🪼 She's progressed so much with her swimming which is amazing, still learning but thankful she has grown in her swimming skills 🥳 -Cait

We just potty trained our 2 yr old. We bought the thicker type of underwear and just went for it. About 10 days later and he’s coming to us asking to go to the bathroom. You can do it!

Thank you!! Almost there! But Man we are looking forward to being potty trained 😆 - it also means that we can stay out on the water longer as the rubbish won't build up as fast! 10 days 🙌🙌🌟 that's amazing! -Cait

Nice video, I really enjoy seeing young families take to boat life. I also appreciate the explanation of your thought process regarding boat choices with kids. I'm a fan of the Crowther boats and am looking at one very similar to yours, a 51' model 85 in Malaysia. Not sure it is right for me and not sure I could sail her single handed. In addition, I heard that despite waterline length the Aluminum Crowthers tend to be slow. What are your thoughts? Is your boat fast? Is it possible to sail her single handed? Appreciate your advice. Hope to see you on the water!

Hey Brian! Sounds like you have found a sistership! We are a 2005 Design 85 Mark IV. In our search for a boat we did look at an older alloy crowther (80 model) and we absolutely loved her so much. She was a sturdy boat. Ive had a look online at the one you are talking about and she has some awesome daggerboards and love the bulbous bows lock did. This one might be an alloy sister ship to SANCTUARY (a fiberglass 85). I can speak to our boat. We average about 7 knots. 9 and above seem to be her sweet spot and when she hits 9s she seems to break suction and is in her element. Her design paperwork has her designed for 15 knots but we have not achieved that, we have gotten 14 knots surfing down a wave. We personally are overweight and that is something that we are working on. We have been out in some weather and she handles really well, you wouldnt know being on board that it was rough weather, she is steady and plows on. There is a sistership named NooraMunga and she ran out of the Bass Strait doing charters and her owners said that she is in her element down there and handles beautifully. As far as sailing, there are modifications we would make for making it single handed but each of the boats is different where the ropes and winches are that you would have to see the boat to make that judgement. All the sisterships we have seen have some winches and ropes in different areas and different set ups. In all, we hands down would go this boat again and go alloy catamaran all over again. We are really happy with her. -Cait

Thank you for the great detailed reply! I do appreciate the encouragement. I leave for Southeast Asia tomorrow and will be going to look in another week or so. I owned an aluminum project boat which I was forced to sell for health reasons so am a bit nervous as this boat has been sitting for a few years on the hard. I have a checklist of things to look out for and realize that I'll probably have to replace the cutlass bearings, filters and maybe some of the running rigging. Can you think of anything else I should be aware of? I expect there might be a few places with galvanic corrosion. Any advice on nooks or crannies that I should check? Appreciate your advice. Brian

Hey Brian, We looked for: -electrolysis -looked at wiring, where things were grounded -pulled up floor boards to have a look at hull -fuel tanks - if they were separate tanks or part of hull? One had the fuel tank as part of the hull and a pervious owner to the current one installed a reader and the current owner unattached it because they didn't want the chance of electrolysis. -corrosion -water tanks, what and where they were Our main things were the integrity, structure, set up and then after that we were looking at things for living like toilet/shower, galley set up / beds etc. The amazing thing is that al the alloy cats we looked at never leaked. We were on the one built in the 80s in the rain and she was super dry, no leaks. We don't get leaks in ours either (knock on wood) so hopefully the one you are going to look at is the same and shes been well locked up while sitting on the hardstand. We will be doing a hybrid rigging soon, half ss and half dyneema. Might be something to keep your eye on and consider. Safe flights tomorrow and good luck! -Cait
