Buying Property in Bulgaria - 20 Things We Love
We thought we would bring you today 20 things we love about Bulgarian houses. Older homes here tend to have most if not all of these features .
------
Would you like to escape to a simpler place and time? Maybe just for a nice relaxing holiday, or maybe to leave the ‘rat race’ for good.
We are an English couple living in a rural village in the foothills of the Balkan mountains - a place where time seems to have stood still.
We make videos about life here with an emphasis on Slow living and Cottagecore:
A return to the land, home cooked food from scratch, rustic interiors, Self-sufficiency, local customs and traditions, and the beautiful countryside around our home.
Perhaps your dream has been to take early retirement? Or to afford your own small farm or homestead? Or maybe you just want to take a relaxing holiday in a beautiful sunny location.
We have been able to realise our own dreams of doing all of the above. We have created this channel to provide help, advice and information for anyone wishing to do the same, and to celebrate this beautiful location.
Our valley is the perfect place to relax. Enjoy the beautiful surroundings and the sunny climate, and let the fast pace of the modern world fade away. Indulge in home cooked traditional food and wines in rustic surroundings. delight in the colourful customs and celebrations that are still alive here. Maybe rediscover ‘old’skills like wine making, canning, Animal husbandry, or just how to cook a traditional dish on the log-fueled ‘petchka’.

It looks great and I love the outbuildings. Looks like going back in time, wonderful. Life looks far less stressful than that in western Europe.

I have been looking at Bugarian properties for years now. I live in Canada, and property is so incredibly expensive here, that there is no way I can even afford an apartment, let alone a home and garden! I would miss my family terribly however, and the flight from here is so long that if I moved there I would seldom see them .

Hello! And thank you for your kind comments. It is a difficult decision but one that we have made and we don’t look back. We went from having a huge mortgage and a tiny garden to owning four properties and over an acre of land. Land is incredibly cheap. I had always wanted to be self-sufficient so here is the place to do it and you can afford really beautiful properties out in the countryside. The towns are more expensive And the city, especially so, but there’s lots of affordable property in the villages. With regard to seeing our family - between us, we have six children three from each of our previous marriages - they are in disparate parts of the world - and we realised that we could only probably get to see most of them once a year anyway. Now they come on holiday for one or two weeks at a time and we have some real high-quality time with them. I have no idea or how long the flights are from Canada- we do have a daughter in Australia and we only get to see her every other year - but she keeps in touch on zoom etc. But it is a big decision.🥰

Funny to hear you mention Agas as I'm an engineer! Unfortunately the UK government is looking at banning them/oil burning by the 2030's! Do you think there would be a demand for English speaking builders/electricians/plumbers in Bulgaria? Or a firm to help ex pats renovate their homes? Im in my early 30's and I'm just weighing up the pros and cons. Cheers!

😊 hi Adam! Personally, yes, I do! It is very difficult to find good workmen who speak English, and we personally have been “ripped off“ a few times, which has made us very wary - mind you one of those was English!! But I think if you built up a reputation for yourself, and you have the right contacts you could definitely make some money - you would need to be in one of the highly populated Expat areas , which include the black Sea and VT However, having said that, I would not come over here and rely on that as an income until you’ve got established you would need savings and a secondary income. Since Brexit, they won’t give residency unless you have an income as you have left the EU. If you want to learn more about residency - go to the guv.uk site We also have lots of groups over here on Facebook and WhatsApp. You can join for people thinking of moving here - a very useful one is called “moving to Bulgaria“ you’ll find them on Facebook. It’s a big step - but we’ve never looked back. Good luck.🥰

I’ve just written to you, Adam - but I forgot to add - that’s just typical isn’t it of the English government! Banning Argas! What next? It’s one of the things we love about life here. Adam - it’s a lot more free and a lot less stupidly restricted with all these rules and regulations - you can actually buy glue, paracetamol is 😃

Many thanks for the quick reply! Ill make sure to join some groups and check out what other people are saying. The price of property and what you get is really amazing compared to the UK. Cheers!@@Escapetoasimplerplaceandtime

😃an Arga is a large oven that was traditionally fuelled bye fossil fuel, but nowadays could even be electricity - you see them in traditional country homes - and they cost a fortune to buy in England, but a similar version is available here in Bulgaria for just a couple of hundred pounds😊

The '' windows'' in the loft are a primitive form of cooling. They work due to the ''chimney effect''. A low pressure zone is produced on the leeward side of a building which has the affect of pulling the warm air out of the roof space through the open windows. They should be left open during the summer and closed during the winter. Cob is a crap insulator and to be anywhere near effective must be at least 600mm thick, it was used in days gone by primarily as a gap filler in ceiling spaces. Only 26% of Bulgarians live in rural locations, the other 74% live in towns and cities.

Thank you for your knowledgeable input. Our walls are actually extremely thick. And the windows don’t close. There aren’t any windows in the loft just open spaces - maybe they are windows in at some point but there is no evidence of that. Thank you

@@Escapetoasimplerplaceandtime There should be windows....open in the summer, find a way to block them in the winter, simple XPS ( fibran) cut to size will work.
