Buying the Cheapest Model S 100D then Blasting Across the Country (Very Cold!)

Kyle went to Minnesota to pick up the cheapest Model S 100D in the country. He drove it in the blistering cold almost 30 hours straight through to New Hampshire to catch a flight just in time. Another typical Out of Spec Motoring EV road trip!
The Model S is a clean car (never been hit), has just over 50k miles, and every option except 21" wheels and was just about $60k. The dealership wrongly listed it as a 60D which is why we jumped on the deal.

For non-EV-owners: videos like this are just fun tests and have no relation to normal use. People often think charging an EV is the worst thing about them, but it's actually one of the best. I've owned a Model 3 for a year-and-a-half and have only ever used the 240v outlet in my garage. For the vast majority of people, stopping at a charger to charge would only happen a couple of times a year around holiday road trips. It's so rare that it's actually kind of a fun part of the road trip. I've used a Supercharger with a different Tesla, and it's a chance to rest your eyes, get lunch or a snack, check in with loved ones, or play a video game on the console.

Tysto i have owned a model 3 for 15 months and have 35,000 miles. Charging on trips can be a pain in the ass. Sure 15 or 20 minute charges in isolation are no big deal. On a long trip, that can add up to a reduction of 120 or 180 miles one can travel in a day. I love my 3, but i am also honest about its shortcomings.
@Tysto
@Tysto 3 года назад
jason I’m talking about normal use. Multi-day trips cross-country are not normal use.
@jase1125
@jase1125 3 года назад
Tysto Absolutely that is part of normal use. People across the country take long trips routinely. Just look up statistics on AA. If what you said is true, then there would be no need for superchargers.
@asanti76
@asanti76 3 года назад
@@jase1125 very true. However, the upside is that you NEVER spend 5 minutes once a week (52 weeks x 5 minutes = 4hours a year) inside a gas station, never wait in line for an oil change, never do tune up, any other gas related maintenance. Supercharging takes time but you make it up some other way due to your car being battery

@@dwaynechaulk7387 he explains on other videos that if you charge the car at its highest rate while you stop and then run to the next station. If you’re patient you can find pretty good deals on used from Tesla. Picked up a 2017 100D with 18k on it for 65k. They come with free unlimited SC on the 100’s and 2-4 year 50k on the warranty in most cases. Took two months but they pop up every now and then. Range mode significantly limits battery heating, which reduces your supercharging speeds on road trips. Best is to turn range mode off when you are road tripping. Range mode is good for a lot of short trips around town (like holiday shopping or running errands throughout the day) because it prevents energy from being wasted on battery heating. With range mode off, you should see 120+ kW on that 100D up to about 50% state of charge.

LOL Kyle, great to have you visit the Chicago area. Yeah, we drive fucking nutso fast here, don't matter the conditions, or even if cops are there LOL. One thing I've noticed in my 10 years ish of driving in Chicago is that some drivers follow the go-fast-in-the-zoom-lane and other completely ignore it. Kinda makes for better driving but also kinda ups the shit show factor as well. Still better than Florida drivers. And also, that nighttime low of 27F is actually quite cold for December I'd say (not sure what it's like for you over in Colorado, but given we are several thousand feet lower in altitude, I'd assume we're a wee bit warmer). Our winters are FAR warmer and have way higher relative humidity index (due to warm and moist gulf air masses) than Minneapolis' ones, though, when the polar vortex strikes we are no stranger to a little negative temps here and there. Definitely not normal though. Even in the dead of winter daily high temps usually hit around 25-30F, it's the wind chill that'll kill ya and rip your body heat away in seconds. Its that dastardly year round constant humidity. Something also to consider is that our climate is even more mild than it would be because the Great Lakes moderate our weather year round. Warmer winters and Cooler Summers (relatively that is). I'd say our summers are still stupid hot (I would NOT recommend visiting here in the summer tbh), and our winter still gets fairly cold regardless. Our climate is weird, but I love it.

That's exactly why it was mildly infuriating that he was letting the battery pack go so low. Below 20% charging speed was in the 60's and above 50% charging speed was still in the 90's. So, it would have been a much better strategy to keep the charge between 20 and 80 percent (or wherever the charging speed tapers below 60 kwh as the pack charges up).

It's important to stay away from the sugary crap. Take a little stretch break get back in the car and repeat that. I will absolutely never ever drive while I am sleepy . being physically tired I can work through by stopping and stretching and taking a break walking around a little bit. but as soon as I start to get sleepy I find a rest area convert my car into sleep mode something I really like about the Prius is you can camp in it quite easily. And get a good night's sleep and continue driving. I think very shortly we will start to see electric vehicles that could do this same task but it's not quite there yet even with Tesla's. Also as I age I may find that I need longer breaks than I currently take... and I totally admit that many people already would need regular longer breaks than I do.. in which case the 15 to 30 minutes stops with an electric vehicle might be something good for them already.

So many factors. Tesla has really good software to protect components so it ramps power down for various reasons. It’s becoming more frequent on newer updates and as equipment ages. I’ll do a whole video on this in the next week or two, nobody is talking about this and it’s really annoying

Great video but says to me to keep the diesel and do the trip in one hit (or maybe two) although I do get the fun behind planning with a EV which would be fine if you were on holiday, but when time is tight, no thanks I couldn’t stand the stress and frustration. Anyway I have just subscribed as content interesting, well presented and fun. Thank you

Definitely agree if you’re traveling in A little bit warmer even like 30° you’ll be better not that low temperature like this is very problematic and he could’ve stopped a little more often or stayed at the first charger to 90% then he would’ve been a little bit quicker but definitely could be stressful you just Gotta get used to it like I did.

On all those prior saved destinations in the gps you can swipe right on them individually to delete them. It won't delete all with one click but if you are sitting at a charger you can delete them one by one to clear it out. Also I went from my model S to my LR AWD 3, the MCU is alot faster on the 3 and the charging was a ton faster on my new 3 than my 85d I had. Crazy how much of a difference it is between processors.

had a similar experience. Was looking for a 90D.. found one that was mis-listed as a 85D and was priced accordingly. Didn't get as good deal as you did, but probably one of the lowest priced 90Ds I'd ever seen

Heya, at @33 mins. you may slide addresses out to the right. Just hold and slide the address to delete it. It'll speed up the computer, not a lot, negligible but still good to have them out.

What a great find. Those are some nice parking spots at 12:35. I wish Tesla would paint all of them like that - harder to plead ignorance for ICE vehicles. Tesla says "you won't make it to the next SC yet" - Kyle "hold my beer, I'm going to leave now". Haha, Thanks for mentioning to update Plugshare to show Superchargers that are not working properly. Maybe you will find out it has FSD and hence eventually the new computer with this new S. That will help the display lag. I wish Tesla would let you pick fastest charging/trip or shortest number of charging stops.

1:30 - That is so deeply satisfying to see an elevator (in this case, either a ThyssenKrupp or Otis) count the 13th floor! Also, I would be worried that, on top of the car not being able to finish charging, the bitter cold would also take some of the range.

I like tesla and electric cars for everyday driving like getting to work and stuff but for road trips it's just so slow compared to patrol/diesel car
@Jaws1200
@Jaws1200 4 года назад
It really isn’t. My wife and I took a road trip from Cleveland to Orlando (1200 miles) in about 18 hours of travel time (15 driving, 2-3 hours charging). Planning our pit stops around charging stops made for the trip to not actually “feel” any longer than an ICE trip. And Autopilot makes road trips a breeze!

You and Bjorn Nyland should do a competition because he drives down to 5% and charges for up to an hour at each stop. I drive an Ioniq and favour the shorter and more often charging approach that you use.
