One thing to also consider is how much flying you will do a year. If under about 60-80 hours, it's probably cheaper to rent (depending on area). Most spreadsheets I've seen show that owning only starts making sense north of 80 or maybe 100 hours/year. At least in my area a club use of a nice C172 is about $105/hour, renting is maybe $165/hour. YMMV of course.

There's a lot of reasons owning works better and most have to do with more than just cost: 1) Most rentals are just for the day or maybe two. If you want to fly off somewhere and spend a few days or week or more at the location with the aircraft tied down on the ramp, rental companies are either going to say "no" or charge you as if you're flying it the whole time. 2) Availability, your own aircraft is always available whenever you decide to go. Rental companies often only have one or a couple of aircraft and it's not unusual that they aren't available especially when it's last minute. 3) Confidence in airworthiness: Rental company's have to watch the bottom line and sometimes this isn't always compatible with the highest maintenance and safety standards. With your own plane you can be sure of when maintenance is performed and choose an A&P you trust to perform it. 4) Equipped to your specifications and you have high familiarity: Your own aircraft is going to have the safety features (Belt restraints, airbags. lights etc.) avionics, prop and of course aircraft type, that you want. You're going to be very familiar with the controls and avionics minimizing pilot workload and mistaken inputs which enhances safety and makes flying more enjoyable.

Thanks guys. thought if we could purchase a 310R without breaking the bank of ownership. What is the best way of owning one for the hanger, maintenance, insurance and additional fees? How do we rent our plane to others to keep these cost down? And is it a good idea to rent out our plane?
@alvingeroy3242
@alvingeroy3242 2 года назад
not a wise choice to buy a 310, you'll pay around 60k for it out the gate and then the Overhaul per engine costs $16,000 the Overhaul has to be done every 1,500 hours or 12 years, so if the last overhaul was done say 10 years ago then you'll need to dish out 32k in 2 years and that's not including paying for fuel or anything of the sort. Planes are money burners and unlike cars they are very expensive. you can buy a Learjet 25 for around 230k and it cruises at 600mph with twin jet engines which can get you from LA to NY in about 5 hours haha, but what they don't tell you is each operational hour is technically banking negative $1500 before fuel! because an overhaul at 200,000 miles or 410 hours costs around $600,000 in cash or the plane will go down and kill you eventually. the way I look at it all is this way, if you bought a learjet for 230k and it can hold 6 passengers plus 2 crew. you'd need to charge each head around $182 per flight hour or per 600 miles to break even and not be negative minus fuel and get that private experience of flying all your friends in a Learjet say from Seattle to Japan, you'd need to charge $2,600 per head to not come out of any maintenance, but lets come back to earth. usually nobody flys 400+ hours a year, or 200,000 flight miles. say you could round trip from Seattle to California in 4 hours, You can take 100 round trips with 6+2 before you need the overhaul and if you wanted to time it to last the 12 years well you'd be able to fly a 2,200 mile round trip roughly 8 times a year for 12 years haha which is Alot, and if you are succesful enough just put 50k a year in savings and you'll be clear.

What variant of the cub was that in the video? Early cubs dont have an electrical system and are day vfr only. That looks more like a super cub which go for 80k+
@douglasgabrielle6623
@douglasgabrielle6623 3 года назад
Correct. The J-2 cub doesn't have a pressure cowling. The cylinders stick out in the breeze. 65 horsepower. Solo from the rear seat. Fuels is right behind the engine. The numbers looked right for a J-3, but the plane shown, was a PA-18 Super Cub. For the last 20 or so years of production, they had a 150 HP engine, similar to a 172. Cruise a little over 100 knots, burning 8.5/hour. There was an in-between model, the PA-11 Cub Special. Had the pressure cowl, and front seat solo, like the PA-18, but early versions had 65HP and later versions 85HP. If memory serves, the 85 was the first with an electrical system. (In case you're wondering how I know all this, a very long time ago I was Manager Of Press Relations for Piper--when the Super Cub was still in production.)

I think part of the focus for the video was from an affordability perspective. That puts the A5 in a completely different category than the used copies of the makes/models they listed. Isn't the A5 running about $390,000 now? That's a pole vault north of the $30-40,000 for an old Cherokee 140.

Regarding the 172, you mentioned that one can get a decent 172 for around 40,000 dollars? Can you show me one? There is none in the market....a decent or average 6 out of 10 rated 172 costs a around 55,000 dollars.....may be you get a damn old, beat up or high engine time 172 for 40,000 dollars!....when its high engine time, not sure if that qualifies for being average or decent
@Blitzaviation
@Blitzaviation 3 года назад
look on trade a plane and on barnstormers. you can find straight tails for 40k that are VFR only. again He did say if you want IFR you would spend upwards of 100k which is true to a 172. old doesnt mean it is bad these are not cars and most of the straight tails I see have lower timed or mid timed engines
@patricknimmo8812
@patricknimmo8812 3 года назад
My uncle got his 172 for 25k. Granted he bought it from another family member but in normal market, it would probably go for 30-35k. I’ve flown it a couple times, only issues are paint chips
@hefeibao
@hefeibao 3 года назад
@@Blitzaviation This is a really fair point as the cost variation is less about the airframe and more about the avionics. Huge difference between one with steam gauges vs. one with a Garmin G5, let alone one with a G1000. The avionics are worth as much as the airframe sometimes LOL. Truth that many have been snapped up by the Chinese market too, driving their valuations higher than they used to be.
@Blitzaviation
@Blitzaviation 3 года назад
@@hefeibao Defiantly lol all of my training has been in a 2010 SP 172 so G1000 and they were over 300k to get brand new lol but I still love going and flying the older ones. There is a guy near me who has a straight tail 172 that is from 1958 and it flies just as good as the 2012 but doesn't have all the fancy avionics. Personally the older ones fly a little bit smoother than the newer ones but that's just my opinion :)
@hefeibao
@hefeibao 3 года назад
@@Blitzaviation Thanks Bill. At this point since student training at my local club is frozen due to COVID, I've enrolled in a flight school at the same airport to finish up my PPL. They have a single 172SP and the rest are all G1000 and they are fuel injected. The club 172s are older (1976 models with carbs) but have G5s and modern comms. My experience matches yours, e.g. the G1000 does make parts of flying easier however those the older models do seem to fly a lot smoother, and the startup checklists shorter and easier to work through (also only 2 places to take fuel samples vs. 13 - ugh!). Also, I find that with the G5 I look outside the cockpit more and with the G1000 it's easier to get fixated on the display. At this point if I had my own $$ to spend, I'd get an older model 172 and then put in the instruments that I want vs. buying a newer one that had them already installed.
