This plane only cost me $35,000 and has been one of my favorite if not top purchase in my life. Most people are fascinated by how planes work, and some of us go a little further and become pilots. In this video I this my journey to become a pilot, talk about my aircraft, how much it costs, and an in-depth look at it's condition.
This is a 1963/64 piper Cherokee 235 with fixed pitch propeller. Piper is on e of the more common general aviation aircraft companies. It's a low wing plane which I prefer. So if you're interested in getting into learning how to fly a plane or shopping for a piper Cherokee this is the video for you.

Nice to see someone not operating with an unlimited budget, still getting by just fine with the old "steam" gauges I learned on in the late 60s. Kind of like riding a bike in your old cut off jeans instead of team lycra spandex at 10 or more times the price. It may not be as chic as the upper crust, but you can still do it! Thanks for the down to earth presentation!

I'm currently a Student pilot about to Solo, But I've been learning on and using my Dad's E6B that he carried in Vietnam instead of the Electronic calculator most people have. When other people ask me why I use it and paper maps instead of the calculator and Tablet I tell them "You never know when the tablet is going to break, and then it's useless. Even if the paper rips I can still hold the pieces next to each other.

I'll share one little tidbit from experience. If it's your own personal plane the scheduled maintenance is less frequent and that helps keep cost under control. I have a couple planes I rent out, and doing so requires more frequent, required visits to the mechanic. Renting out a plane generates some revenue to help offset some costs but the additional inspections add up. My two cents.
@lowlife7453
@lowlife7453 2 года назад
@@dave0351 When you say "rent out your plane" do you mean that you fly it for someone else or that you literally let someone else take your plane? I have a hard time letting someone ride my motorcycle, drive my boat, or car etc... I imagine its pretty scary handing the keys to a plane over to someone else.
@avestuart
@avestuart 2 года назад
@@lowlife7453 Can't speak for the OP, but typically that means leasing the airplane back to a flight school. Students rent it out and fly with an instructor (or solo), but if you own the airplane you have priority if you want to use it. Some airplanes are very much ideal for lease-back - the Cessna 172 and Piper Cherokee lines, for example, as they are very good and common training airplanes. Right now I have over 300 flying hours with a private and instrument rating, and I rent an airplane from a flight school whenever I want to fly on my own. I have a friend who bought a Cessna 205 high-performance airplane for $160,000 and he hardly flies it, so he leased it to a flight school and rental facility. Problem is that no students ever rent it out and neither do any of the rated pilots. Just not a common aircraft in which to have currency and it's expensive to rent by the hour. For much less I can fly the 172 and keep my instrument rating current.

Glad it was helpful! Best thing would be get a few pilots together and share the costs or buy into a partnership in your area. it will greatly reduce the costs to you. For example your share costs 10k on a Cessna 172 for 20% ownership. 10k on a 5 year term loan will be about 175/month your costs per an hour for the aircraft maybe closer to $70 wet. So if you are going to pile in hours it will be the cheaper cost for sure and shared aircraft expenses.

Hi Karl, As a fellow pilot I thoroughly enjoyed this video. It’s great that you have bought your own aircraft, great explanation also. I spent a fortune after I passed my PPL “hours building” before obtaining my commercial licence and am currently doing my multi engine instrument rating and do sometimes think of how much that sum could have gone towards buying an aircraft such as this! The plane is both cheaper per hour than renting and much nicer than those that a typical school would have (at least in my area.) From what I gathered a 172 or 152 or more standard, but learning in an aircraft with more useful load and features you have a more complete learning experience and once you get your private you can use it whenever it’s not reserved by someone else.

Great video! The Cherokee is a forgiving plane in the air. It's easy to service and easy to find parts. Keeps the cost down. The ADF( not AFD as it sounded like you said) is a great way to find your destination airport if there is an ADF station nearby. The arrow simply points the way to go, you can't miss it. You can even tune in an AM broadcast station. Sadly many ADF stations( proper name is NDB stations) are taken out of service nowadays.

Love your plane!! A few small things that I noticed while watching the video I thought you should know... 1. The device that measures voltage is called an ammeter 2. The blue lever, in a plane with a constant speed propeller, does not control manifold pressure. It actually controls RPM and the throttle will control manifold pressure. 3. The last instrument you showed with the arrow is called an ADF, not an AFD. All it does is point towards an NDB but has the advantage of being usable from further distances. It can track distance if equipped with DME. I’m just a beginner commercial pilot so obviously it’s better to talk to a CFI than me, but I hope this helps!
@Karl__Pierre
@Karl__Pierre 3 года назад
1- yes but brainfart at time of filming 2- blue lever never flown one so I thought it controlled MP. Good to know. 3 - real time film make mistakes. Never used it but again thank you for informing me it sure does help!
@davidvicari5139
@davidvicari5139 3 года назад
1. An ammeter does not measure voltage. A voltmeter measures voltage. An ammeter measures amperes, which is a unit of current. An ammeter in an aircraft actually portrays current flow to the right from the generator or alternator, or to the left from the battery. This is an important concept to understand the health of your electrical system in flight.

Getting ready to take my commercial check ride this week. Really happy for you, man. I have to say. It's clear that you're very enthusiastic about aviation (mostly because we're all eager to share our knowledge). The only critique I have for you is that your throttle controls airflow (not fuel) into the carb or cylinder. The mixture controls the fuel. Sorry for being "that guy". Keep up the great work, man!
@Karl__Pierre
@Karl__Pierre 2 года назад
Really?! I thought throttle was directly correlated to fuel volume and mixture the fuel to air ratio. Smh man lol
@josephculbertson1108
@josephculbertson1108 2 года назад
@@Karl__Pierre Yep, when you open the throttle it allows air to flow into the carburetor, and as that air passes the venturi throat (think Bernouli's principle) it speeds up. This creates a vacuum that pulls a pre-selected volume of fuel (mixture setting) into the carburetor which gets mixed into fuel/air, and then is pulled into the cylinder during the intake cycle.

Yours with the fixed pitch prop has a slightly higher useful load, I think, but really, if you can close the doors it'll fly. One of the few GA aircraft with a useful load almost the same as its own empty weight. If I remember correctly its useful was about 1,450 lbs; empty was around 1,550 lbs. It got burned by terrorists during the Zimbabwe Bush War.

Wow very cool! Nice old plane! I did all of my flight training in CA in Piper Cherokees and Piper Warriors, and they are very well behaved planes! I like the stall characteristics of Piper planes alot! When you pull them up into a stall, they just gently drop their nose back down, nice and straight and politely for you, as though the plane is just gently correcting you for that "uncouth" stall.. Heh.. Very easy to learn nice stabilized approaches in also.. Nice video for non-pilots giving them a nice little tour of the plane, and instruments and controls, nicely done!

Hi Karl, One of my joys of life, was me learning to fly. It all started as a dream, when I was a kid, growing up in Cleveland, Ohio during WW2. We had radios and the local movie houses for entertainment, and every Saturday I was at the show, watching the new and old movies of the day. The news reels, were the oversea information line, and we got to see a lot of action of the war, only a week or two after it happened. Most film was of the airplanes and the fighters doing their thing. I was rapt up in flying way back when. One day I overheard two friends talking about learning how to fly and asked them if I could join them, which I did. Only two of us got our license and the rest is fun fun fun. We bought an old Stearman bi-plane and learned to fly it, didn't take long for me to buy an old 1948 35 Bonanza, what a great airplane, light and easy to fly. I found most planes fly alike, some more responsive than others. This was in the early 60's. We used to fly to Fort Lauderdale for the weekends, get away, during colder times of the year up North in Ohio. Did get into another airplane, a Republic Sea-Bee. My other friend had an island in Lake Tamagami, in Ontario, just 30 miles East of Sudbury, Ont. Fly the land planes up to Canada, jump into the Sea-Bee, and be on the island in 20 minutes. But all good things must come to an end and mine did when I got Married in 1982 and had to sell the toys for a down payment of a house. It looks like you love flying as much as I did. I got a wonderful solid 20 years from it, and wouldn't trade it for anything. Stay safe, and enjoy ! Bob U

I like the early Cherokees with the "articulated" wingtips. I grew up riding around New York State first in a Piper PA22 Tri Pacer then my Dad got a V-35 B Bonanza. After I was out of high school and in college he traded his Bonanza for a Twin Beech predecessor of the Baron. I don't fly anymore but had my A&P ticket 40 years ago. I used to rebuild Pratt & Whitney Wasp radial engines. Those old radial engines were my specialty. I always wanted a DeHaviland Beaver but never found an affordable rebuildable version.

ADF service is neat. I used it a lot in N512G, a c-150 years ago. The ADF beacons are on the sectional chart. Some are used for ILS localizer. Many ADF's are on the field and can be used for a non-precision approach. Often the Unicom field ATIS is also on the ADF. AM radio stations can be entered into the ADF and listened to. The frequencies and locations are on the sectional charts for tuning in.
