The right thing to do would be for the referees to contact the school ADs that evening and tell both that in fairness to the winning team, he didn't get the shot off in time. You can't do much when the gym is in chaos - it wouldn't even be safe. But that night or the following day, you do the right thing.

The backboard turns red before the buzzer sounds. He got it off before the buzzer but not the actual timer.

He definitely didn't get that off in time. This is why during these moments, high schools should implement cameras from multiple angles in the last 2 minutes of a game. I slowed this down to 0.25x and at the 6 sec mark you can clearly see the ball was still in his hands.

To all the people who say it wasn’t a “buzzer beater”…. The officials on the court, right or wrong, ruled it was, so it was a “buzzer beater”

This reminds me of that scene in Teen Wolf where Michael J. Fox took his foul shot, made it, and everyone in the gym was cheering and rushed out to gather around the team in celebration. Similar situation here but with different circumstances. Still it was great to see.

It's NOT the time clock, but the buzzer that indicates when the game ends. The buzzer went off AFTER he released the basketball. It was good.

If you slow it down and take screen captures it is CLEARLY well in his hands and arms not even extended. This shot should NOT have counted. Period.

What a moment! This would've been wild to see live. Amazing play by #1. That said, reading through the comments it is mind boggling that this is up for debate. If you didn't know, you can advance the video by 1 frame by pressing "." (and you can go back a frame by pressing ","). In doing so you can clearly see the frame when the clock hits 0 by looking at the red lights on the backboard, and the ball is clearly in his hands by his head. Not to mention the fact that the clock started extremely late.

ok, this is a three-man officiating crew. before the ball was put into play, they should have confirmed who had responsibility for any potential last-second shot based on where the shot originates. imho, the lead official at 0:00 (white hair, nearest to camera) immediately becomes the trail official when the ball is deflected at 0:04. and since he is the nearest official to the shot (and the only official in the backcourt), he should have assumed responsibility for determining if the shot was released in time. however, for some reason, he proceeded toward the endline out-of-camera and never recovered to a proper position to make the call. at 0:06, it is rather obvious that both of the other officials' views are blocked by players and they do not have an unimpeded line-of-sight to the shooter. bottom line is the hometown crowd made the call on this play.

The ref only called the bucket because he thought it would be cool for a buzzer beater to happen, if you play in slow motion, he clearly still had the ball in his hand when the game timer went off.

Yikes, No 1 in white gave the whole season away in one play. First he throws a horrible pass, and when he sees the turnover, he puts his arms up celebrating instead of running to the ball and play defense.
