Eric and Eric head in to the BWCA for a cast and blast trip to Thomas Lake. Originally the trip was planned as a season-closing lake trout trip, but the weather had other plans, making fishing for Lake Trout very difficult.
Luckily, we brought along a shotgun and our walleye tackle and were able to have a lot of fun catching bwca walleyes, which were in the mood to feed, unlike the Lakers. We were also able to find a few ruffed grouse on this trip to cook up for dinner.
Part 1 is our travel day and our first day fishing Thomas, which proved tough. We did manage a few really nice walleyes, and little did we know, the walleye action was about to be lights out on day 3, but that is reserved for part 2

I'm enjoying your videos. I'm happy to see you guys taking to the outdoors. You're a generation or maybe 2 behind me, and it makes feel good to know that you are carrying on the great sport

Thank you for watching and thank you for the kind words! I spend as much time in the woods as life allows and encourage others to do the same! My wife and I moved up from St Paul almost 5 years ago and it’s been the best decision we’ve ever made!

Thomas - one of my favorite lakes! The cave you saw near your campsite saved my life one winter - literally. Some day I’ll tell you the story of a nearly fatal January trip into there.

You guys should listen to an audio tape called Hatchet,and Hatchet-2. No, no one is killed by a hatchet. Its a survival story. You could read the book. But the reader of the book does a great job. Enjoy...

@@therealfarwater O believe you live in Ely I was wondering if you could give us water temps as frequently as possible? I have a June 1 trip planned. Looking for spawning smallmouth (all catch and release/barbless). Water temps are way behind normal. I talked with a Atikoken bait store yesterday. Ice out was 4 days ago. And lakes skimmed over with ice the other night. Thanks...

Did knife work out for ya this past weekend? Brookie season was slow, but we still got several in the 17-19.5"range. Made a short portage and paddled up to splash lake portage and quickly got a nice limit of eyes.

@therealfarwater 2 года назад
Good to hear! Yea, we got into knife just fine. Water was really high on those portages but managed to get to knife with zero ice. Water was a frigid 39 degrees when we arrived. Fishing was tough but we managed a few big trout, walleye and pike. No numbers, but all quality fish. Thanks for asking!

Hoping fishing is primed up by then so i can get the gf into her first lakers of some size. Shes caught a bunch of trout but nothing over a couple pounds yet. She needs to feel the struggle.lol

@@eduffy4937 that sounds great! We briefly thought about traveling to Amoeber or little knife but decided to focus on knife this time around. You should be able to find plenty if you spend time on the water. Trolling should be the way to go, but you never know. Best of luck

Can you bring a weapon to prevent a bear attack (45 acp or 357)?
@therealfarwater
@therealfarwater Год назад
Yes, you can bring guns into the BWCA for personal protection or hunting but I would strongly suggest you don’t for bear protection. We have black bears up here which are quite skittish and I don’t believe have ever attacked anyone in the BW. They are primarily vegetarian and very scared of humans. Some bring bear spray but even that is overkill. Usually, banging together pots and pans and/or throwing rocks is plenty to get a bear out of camp quickly.

I was happy to see you harvest the legs on that grouse. Too many people only take the breast meat out of game birds.
@therealfarwater
@therealfarwater 2 года назад
Of course I harvest them and encourage others to do so as well. Legs aren't as tender, but there's tons of meat there! Same with ducks

Having grown up freshwater fishing to eat and store food in the deep freeze in the winter the concept of catch and release is foreign to me but I am glad to see it if you don’t plan on eating the fish.
@therealfarwater

We generally eat plenty of fish on these trips, this evening we had giant ribeye steaks to eat.

Love your channel and you are a great walleye and trout fisherman. Someone really needs to show you how to properly dress a grouse. You’re doing it all wrong my guy!
@therealfarwater

Thank you! I just started grouse hunting so I am new to this. My method isn't that quick, but it wastes very little meat, which is most important to me.
