I can not stress the importance of the donations my project receives from very truly generous music lovers worldwide. I do my best not to spend on unnecessary things. Today, I will tell you that I used $200.00 of donation money to pay for a license from Naxos of America to keep my animation of Bach’s Clavieübung III up for the life of the posting. Without commercials and free for those who want to see the secrets behind this most misunderstood composition. I thank all the donors who made this possible! You help me and my project so much. I do not know what I would without all of you. This animation is yours! Please enjoy it… as long as you want!

People often note how humbling it is to see impressive works that composers made when they were young (Mozart, Mendelssohn, Rachmaninoff, etc.). That's definitely true, but I think if you really want to feel mediocre, just look at any fugue/canon/etc. by my boy J.S. Bach.
@verfuncht

Exactly. The prodigies’ early compositions are so impressive because of the ages of their composers, while Bach’s are incredible simply by their existence.

What I love about that prelude is the form, it mirrors the previous Clavierubung by starting with a French Overture like BWV831, moving to an Italian Concerto style like BWV 971, and then the third part is a German fugue, his home turf. He condenses his previous years work in a minute or two and then moves onto something fast paced and exciting, all while connecting the 3 themes in such a genius way. The form and structural logistics of the piece are astounding, but it is not even the main attraction for me personally, the melodies and subjects are so expressive which is why I keep coming back.

In the Prelude “Kyrie, Gott heiliger Geist” The pedal part was rather easy compared to the previous preludes. But, Bach makes up for the lost complexity with a rather difficult manual part. I thought that was so cool.

Wasn't it pretty radical to put a Kyrie with German lyrics in between? That's a pretty big statement.
@xbqchm
@xbqchm 4 года назад
Yes, Luther was pretty radical regarding theology, but don't forget, it wasn't him who wanted to leave the Catholic church. He was excommunicated because he wasn't willing to revoke his teachings, but he the schism wasn't his intention. He has kept a lot of traditions of the old church (including the ordinary of the mass which includes Kyrie), even reinstated some then forgotten ones. The "Kyrie" chorales merely follow this initiative and add explanations to the Greek/Latin mass texts in national language - in line with Luther's principle that church services, public and private prayers and sacred texts should be translated and explained in a languge spoken by the members of the local congregation.
@ja_cob_mus
@ja_cob_mus 4 года назад
I should also mention that the practice of "troping," adding newly written texts to parts of the Mass Ordinary, was already an longstanding and well accepted tradition from at least the establishment of Gregorian chant. These "tropes" would sometimes relate directly to the portion of the Mass Ordinary they were added to, but other times they would relate instead more to the Mass Proper for the particular day they were sung on, calling on particular saints or mentioning seemingly unrelated biblical passages. And though they were written in Latin, they were often written in highly regional Latin dialects as spoken by the monks in a particular place, with many words recorded in these tropes for the first time. The practice of troping wasn't abolished until the Council of Trent, decades after Luther. What is most significant about including German words is the same thing that is significant about translating the Bible into German, which is that it begins involving laypeople in religion without the need for a translator.

The German word "Clavierübung" (also written "Clavieruebung") means "keyboard practice" (cf. "étude"). Bach's third volume of this work is referred to as an organ mass.
@herrickinman9303
@herrickinman9303 4 года назад
None of the volumes of the Clavier-Uebung contain any pieces that a knowledgeable musician would categorize as etudes or practice material to develop keyboard skills. An apt translation of title page would be: "Third Part of the Keyboard Practice [a better translation might be "Keyboard Treatise"], consisting of diverse organ [chorale] preludes on [Martin Luther's] Catechism and other [Lutheran] hymns. Composed for music lovers, and especially for connoisseurs of such work, for the refreshment of their spirits, by Johann Sebastian Bach, Royal Polish and Electoral Saxon Court Composer, Capellmeister, and Director of the Choral Music in Leipzig. Published by the author." Not a word in the title page suggests that the purpose of the work is to provide practice material to develop keyboard playing skills.
@notlih11
@notlih11 4 года назад
I don't want to dispute what you say, Mr. Inman. I am not a keyboard artist, and you certainly seem to know whereof you write. My main point, the reason I chimed in, is that "Clavierübung" is not German for "organ mass". Whatever the intent of the composer or performer, "Übung" does mean "practice"; a treatise is generally a Handlung, or Abhandlung. And with respect to the term "etude", aren't you familiar with quite a few pieces called etudes which you would not categorize as practice material to develop (keyboard} skills?
@herrickinman9303
@herrickinman9303 4 года назад
@@notlih11 I know what _Uebung_ means, Ms. notlih11. In the late Baroque _Clavier-Uebung_ was often used as a title for a collection of keyboard music. Bach published four collections of keyboard music under the title "Clavier-Uebung," yet none of these collections was intended for "keyboard practice." This is evident not only from the character of the music, but also from the title pages, each of which states that the collection was composed "for music lovers to refresh their spirits." The title page of the so-called Organ Mass adds that the collection was especially composed for connoisseurs. My point is that a literal translation of _Clavier-Uebung_ is misleading and naive.
@ruperttmls7985

Is not the same that Scarlatti’s “Essercizi per gravicembalo”? The word “Essercizi” = “Ubung”?
@notlih11
@notlih11 3 года назад
@@ruperttmls7985 There may be a shade of difference between the English terms "exercises" (essercizi) and "practice" (Übung or Uebung, not Ubung), where the former may put emphasis on variety and the latter on repetition; but where different composers are using different languages, I would not make too fine a point of it. They may well mean the same thing.

There's something wrong with the software you're using to display some of the music. Some of the semibreves (whole notes) are incorrectly shaded, making them look like minims without a stem. Semibreve noteheads are shaded from top left to bottom right, and minims are shaded from bottom right to top left. It's just a small thing but it's quite off-putting, maybe you should use some different software for future videos.
