When I was about 5 or 6 I was fascinated by buses. My mum would take us into town to do the shopping on these Bristol REs of Bristol Omnibus in Gloucester in the late 70s/early 80s. We also had Leyland Nationals and Bristol VR double deckers, and the Lodekkas. It's the sound that brings it back. I was once walking along the street a few years ago, and the local bus company were having a vintage running day. I heard the RE before I saw it! I know some find this stuff a bit anorak-y, but it certainly brings back fond childhood memories for me hearing the sounds.

That’s pretty much how it started for me too. I can remember travelling into Crewe in Cheshire in the mid 1970s on Bristol REs and then this new Leyland National turned up, with its massive, light interior and it sounded very different.

A well driven semi-auto is a delight to behold......especially accompanied by the glorious sounds of an RE!

@@richardwalker_As a young child we'd often travel from York to London on United Automobile's fine cream and olive green Bristol RELH's - if lucky I'd be in a seat with a view of the gearlever and I'd notice how smooth those drivers were - especially compared to some of the local bus drivers - and decided that when I passed my car test the United RE driver's would be my role models....... unfortunately of course my car wouldn't feature a pneumocyclic gearchange!! Good to hear this RE is such a delight - man and machine in perfect harmony!

Thanks, I had a very good teacher. I just need to stop my camera rig from rattling so much now.

Nice footage of a well driven RE. Can’t help notice that the electronic speedometer does’t work….common problem!

Thanks; I had a very good tutor. Yes the speedometer sprang into life after a few miles. They don’t like being parked up.

I have a bit of a soft spot for REs as South Shields was home to a number of second hand ones in the late 80s and 90s, firstly with Busways then Hylton Castle (Catch A Bus). Busways moved the surviving REs to Blue Bus Services in the early 90s and acquired more, including this one.

Yes, same here - we are fortunate to have a few in preservation, many of which served time in Northern Ireland and/or with Busways at some point. So fortunate too, to be able to still enjoy a proper drive in those, like EC RL516 here (and see EN 1546 in a previous video from the week before), and a couple of others locally.

Badgerline between Bristol and Gloucester used to use REs well into the 90s as well.
