By far my favorite and most spectacular CIRCLING APPROACH (one last time)

This category C airport is special for several reasons: Severe turbulence and windshear likely with winds from the south/west; special escape procedures in case of engine failure; landing mandatory single engine due to performance limitations/high terrain; challenging go around RWY 18, terrain warnings, high bank and higher sink rate at very low heights during circling to land RWY 36; take-offs to the north only (depending on aircraft type) with increased tailwind limitation;
A cockpit video of RNP 18 approach with circling RWY 36 at Calvi (LFKC/CLY)

This is my third and most likely last Calvi video. Calvi approaches to RWY 18 and circling 36 have been featured in other videos before, including a full day cockpit documentary (1 hour) if you are interested and have not seen so far, check it out please. Calvi is a very special airport for good reasons and since I was trained to fly to Calvi 3 years ago, I have been there 16 times. Just like at any other airport, weather can make the difference. I do remember two pretty challenging landings on RWY 18 due to gusty winds and on a Saturday in September 2023, we decided to land and to stay on the ground until southerly winds calm down to a maximum of 15 knots, which is our tailwind limit for take-offs on RWY 36. That day, we already had received our take-off clearance after an almost 3 hours turnaround and as safety is always our no. 1 priority, we have vacated the runway due to tailwind in excess of 20 knots. Surprisingly to my First Officer and me, a french carrier departed with an Airbus on RWY 36 and tailwind of more than 20 knots. Another 50 minutes later, we finally departed with 12 knots tailwind. I have recorded it on video and back at home I decided not to post the videos of that day. As pilots we must always keep in mind, that limitations are limits that we must not exceed. It is the most important part of our job to guarantee a safe operation - anytime! Now, summer season is almost over, I will be back in Calvi next year. I have recently received my second category c airport familiarization: Funchal. I´m really excited to come back for the first time to Funchal as a Captain. Thank you very much guys for watching!

Impressive view from the cockpit 👌🏻 thanks a lot. I had one question when the radio altimeter announces minimum you said continue…at this point can you still have some alarms from the gpws or is it completely muted? Thanks 😊
@PilotWanderlust
@PilotWanderlust 12 часов назад
No, GPWS warnings are always on and can not be muted. At minimum runway must be in sight. „Continue“ means only that rwy is in sight and we continue for landing. However you must react on windshear/ GPWS or any other situation requiring a go around.

You should have done a video about landing in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. Used to fly it all the time in the Airbus. You would get “terrain” warnings on base, and then on final you would get “too low, sink rate, sink rate “ and instinctively you would want to pull up -- but had to continue down for landings
