This movie was SO MUCH FUN!!!! There was so much heart and love poured into the satire of this film and it resulted in a very funny yet engaging sci-fi piece! The implication is that Fred Kwan (playing the engineer) is high the whole time, hence the frequent snacking and invincibly mellow attitude.

I like that Guy was a standard nameless "red shirt" who got to live, got to have a name, got to have a character arc, and got to become one main cast. Red shirts are people too. Touching on the same theme but much sadder, there was an episode of "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" when a recurring background character named Enrique was fatally wounded, but rather than dying cleanly and instantly as generic cannon fodder just "to show that the situation is serious," he died gradually from poison in wound over much of the episode's runtime. While he was struggling to hold on to life, the audience learned about him and his family and developed empathy for the character so his death actually had emotional impact. In a DS9 series retrospective article, one of the showrunners commented on that episode saying that Enrique's death was an elegy to all the "red shirts" who died as expendable zeroes that nobody cared about.

Enrico Colantoni (Mathesar) thought of the signature way the Thermians speak and move when he auditioned for the movie (he based the way they speak on a vocal exercise that stage actors often do to warm up their voices before performing). The filmmakers loved his audition so much that they hired him for the role of Mathesar and put him in charge of teaching the actors how to act like a Thermian.

FUN FACT: Leonard Nimoy used to hate the fact that he was typecast as "Spock." He had a difficult time getting roles because people only saw "Spock." Prior to Star Trek, he had been in several stage productions and did voiceover work. He even toured with the Royal Shakespeare Company. Yet, starring TV and film roles came few and far-between in the first decade following the conclusion of Star Trek: The Original Series. Even in interviews for the roles that he did get, Nimoy lamented over the fact that people would ask him about Star Trek. He even wrote an autobiography in 1975 entitled "I AM NOT SPOCK." Over the years, however, his perception changed. As an increasingly successful writer and director, he came to embrace his role in Star Trek. He realized that he had created a wonderful and iconic character. He wrote a sequel autobiography in 1995 entitled "I AM SPOCK."

There were plans for a sequel, but when Alan Rickman passed away, everyone decided it wouldn't be right without him, and plans were shelved. It was not only an homage to Star Trek, but it was also affectionate and respectful to the fans-Justin Long and friends save the day, but the Thermians themselves were stand-ins for the fans, writ large. It is generally considered to be the one of the best Star Trek movies ("Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World" was also, in a very different way, an excellent Star Trek movie, but that's another matter).

"Never give up. Never surrender." Fun Fact: Tim Allen admitted that he was quite star-struck when he met Sigourney Weaver, as he's a huge fan of Alien (1979). Allen even asked Weaver to sign some of his Alien Franchise memorabilia between takes. She ultimately did. Expanded Role Fact: Laliari is the first main role Missi Pyle landed in a feature film. Her role was expanded after the producers noticed Sigourney Weaver was the only female main character. Red Shirt Lives Fact: Despite frequent whining about his character Crewman Number Six being expendable and going to die, Guy Fleegman (Sam Rockwell) is the only crew member not to be shot and killed by Sarris during his surprise assault towards the end.

Love letter to Star Trek and its fans. The cast is so great. Sir Patrick Stewart didn't intend to see the film as he thought it was making fun of Star Trek, but when a friend insisted otherwise, he saw it greatly enjoyed it.

I'm 71 and a Star Trek Fan since the very first night back in 1966. In the 90's I was big into Star Trek and Sci-Fi Conventions. Met almost everyone from TOS, TNG. DS9 and Voyager. And I can say Star Trek Fans and Star Trek Actors LOVE this Movie!

In an interview back after Galaxy Quest came out, Patrick Stewart was asked about the movie... "I had originally not wanted to see [Galaxy Quest] because I heard that it was making fun of Star Trek and then Jonathan Frakes rang me up and said ‘You must not miss this movie! See it on a Saturday night in a full theatre.’ And I did and of course I found it was brilliant. Brilliant. No one laughed louder or longer in the cinema than I did, but the idea that the ship was saved and all of our heroes in that movie were saved simply by the fact that there were fans who did understand the scientific principles on which the ship worked was absolutely wonderful. And it was both funny and also touching in that it paid tribute to the dedication of these fans."

This is a great movie, but it's even better if you are familiar with Star Trek and it's many tropes. What a wonderful homage. Sadly, with the passing of Alan Rickman and the fact that Daryl Mitchell has lost the use of his legs, we will probably never get a sequel at this point. Apparently there was one planned but the opportunity has passed us by. I miss Alan Rickman, RIP.

You are very right. This movie is a love letter to Star Trek and fandom. Many of us Trek fans regard it as the honorary 11th Star Trek movie. Sadly, all hopes of a sequel died with the late, great Alan Rickman. There were talks of a sequel before he died, but after, they decided it would be better not to do it at all rather than do it without him.

1999 was honestly one of the greatest years for cinema. We got Galaxy Quest (arguably one of the best Star Trek movies even though it isn't one), The Mummy (arguably one of the best Indiana Jones movies even though it isn't one), The Matrix, The Phantom Menace, Fight Club, The Green Mile, Mystery Men, The Iron Giant. It's crazy how many iconic moments came from movies released that year.

A second part was planned a few years ago, but unfortunately Alan Rickman passed away and so the film wasn't made.

Also the use of actual RIPLEY as a space bimbo is so f’ing funny. Any other casting would not have worked as well parodying spandex boobs in space. I also love the countdown clock joke with her and Allen as Ripley does the self destruct all on her lonesome in another universe.

This movie makes me think of the books "Everything I Needed To Know About Life I Learned From Star Trek," about the way Star Trek influenced a fan's outlook on life growing up, and Joseph Campbell's "The Power of Myth Through Time," about how mythology teaches philosophies and values.

I love that Guy ends up playing the security chief in the continuation. He's basically the head redshirt. He won't die but he's gonna get taken out a lot (ever notice how Worf always gets taken out?).

Also, the reason Monk was acting the way he did is because in a deleted scene he got high and the rest of the movie he is high. That makes more sense when you know that lol

Reportedly Patrick Stewart refused to watch this because he thought it would be making fun of fans, until Jonathan Frakes got him to watch it. George Takei called it a documentary, lol.

BEST STAR TREK PARODY EVER!! And it's also a tribute to the original series.

It's hilarious that although Alexander whines about how much he hates his role, he somehow feels obligated to attend the convention in full makeup. No Star Trek actor has ever done that, to my knowledge. The actor playing Sarris referred to him as "Attila the Crab". Tony Shalhoub, who plays Fred, has confirmed the reason why he's always so calm and unbothered: he's stoned. He got high in order to do the signing at the tech store, and he remains high through the whole thing. It's explains his unruffled stance, his happy acceptance of every detail ("Wow, the floors are so clean!" is classic stoner), and his constant snacking. Did you notice how he hangs onto his bag of snacks all through the desperate chase back to the ship on the miner's planet? Those munchies are FIERCE.

Tony Shalhoub, in this, is my spirit animal. If I was thrown into a "Trek" reality I'd definitely be "Probably gonna die; this is *all* great." And I'd have brought snacks too. ...and cute octopus girl...yeah I'd likely happily settle for that. Don't judge me.

Trek fans love Galaxy Quest. I was at a convention several years ago where we fans ranked all the Star Trek movies. Galaxy Quest was ranked 7th.

I always loved how the vaporization at the end, looks like a low budget fireworks effect. So con-goers would think it was just part of the convention.

Now you gotta watch 'The Orville' by Seth McFarlane. when the series first came out they were referring to it as a spoof of Star Trek. A parody as well. It's a comedy. But it eventually grew into it's own and now has a huge fan following. you also gotta check out the movie, Fanboys. it takes place before Star Wars episode 1 and it's about a group of guys and one girl that try to sneak into Lucasfilm to try and watch Ep.1 before anyone else does. But they do it for a reason.

The engineer isn't calm... He's baked!! Oh, and when they all arrive and Guy starts screaming, the Thermian that apologises for not appearing in human form is Crewman Daniels from Star Trek Enterprise.

"Galaxy Quest": The best "Star Trek" movie that Paramount didn't make. I've read that Sigourney Weaver agreed to appear as a Blonde. She felt her IQ dropping when she wore the wing, but she began to wear it off screen...all the way home.;) As for "Galaxy Quest 2/II," if you hit it out of the park, "one and done" works too.

The Orville is a love letter of both this movie and Star Trek. I hope you get to react to the Orville.

As you said, this is absolutely a love letter by fans, for fans. It's like a warm hug.

We almost got a Galaxy Quest TV show. The whole cast was set to return but then Alan Rickman died.

If you notice, the registration of the ship starts NTE and not NCC - NTE stands for 'Not The Enterprise' - so if any Star Trek bods tried to sue then they could point to that as evidence that it was not intended to rip off/impersonate Star Trek! LOL!

One of the BEST Star Trek movies ever. Brilliant music score .. l and totally awesome movie! I saw this at the cinema when it came it out LOVED it entirely. Such a great love letter to Trek. Nowadays it just makes me cry for the good old days. Such a godamn good film And I urge anyone who likes this movie to buy the music score .. it’s amazing! As a Trekkie all my life I can say I and many others do consider this a Star Trek movie. One of the best. I even have a model of the ship. 🖖

Reitman's protégé and he became good friends. When Reitmam realized he wouldn't be able to be part of the sequel. He was the first and due to his passing, only person from the cast he told.

fun fact- Tony Shalhoub's character (fred the engineer) was written to be a stoner but the decided not to include drug references in the movie so removed quite a bit. but you can tell by the way he's acting it makes total sense. lol

David Howard, the script writer, and the other creators of this film, had an INSANELY DEEP understanding of Star Trek, and the various things related to it - including the relationships between the real-life Trek cast members. Here are a few random tidbits: -Leonard Nimoy really did have a complicated relationship with Spock. He didn’t hate the character the way that Alexander seems to hate playing ‘Dr. Lazarus,’ but for a time, Nimoy was •perceived• as hating him (his first autobiography’s title: “I Am Not Spock.” - it left an incomplete, partly mistaken impression in many people's heads; - “Six paragraphs about my boobs, and how they fit into my suit.” Gwen is a blending of several characters: Uhura and also Jeri Ryan from Star Trek Voyager, who, I understand, really did have one print write-up focus heavily on her sex symbol anatomy and skin-tight catsuit. - “I see you managed to get your shirt off!” …I think Kirk’s shirt is torn something like 7 times in the original series. - Interest in making a sequel film collapsed when Alan Rickman passed away. However, since you also liked Sam Rockwell's performance (and what's not to love?) I can recommend watching him playing Justin Hammer in ‘Iron Man 2’ and also playing one of the important antagonists in the first ‘Charlie’s Angels' film with Lucy Liu, Cameron Diaz and Drew Barrymore. - Jason’s inadvertent discovery, in a public restroom, when he overhears how he is perceived by other people (including his former costars) is, I understand, based on a real-life incident that happened to William Shatner, at a convention. - When the group of actors first arrive at the Starport and Guy suddenly screams, if you watch carefully, you can see how startled Sigourney Weaver looks: She had no idea that his scream was coming. - When Gwen and Jason round the corner and see “the chompers” for the first time, if you watch carefully, you can see Gwen mouth the words, “Well, F**K that!!” (which they then dubbed over, presumably to help ensure the PG-13 rating. - Search for the documentary, ‘Never Surrender: A Galaxy Quest Documentary’ that was made about this film, a few years ago. It can be viewed on Amazon, and is well worth savoring!

I don't know if I want a Galaxy Quest 2 without Alan Rickman.

With all the Star Trek episodes you ahve viewed to prep you for this movie there is probably no reactor that is going to enjoy it as much as you. And your reaction did not disappoint.

The Thermians say they are from the Klaatu Nebula. The word "klaatu" is an homage to the classic 1951 b&w sci-fi film "The Day The Earth Stood Still," where Patricia Neal utters the alien phrase "klaatu barada nicto." It's worth checking out if you ever have the time (but don't bother with the 2008 remake, it's garbage).

FYI there's a great documentary about this movie that is very much worth watching. They made it around the time Alan Rickman passed away.

The engineer was so laid back because he was stoned. The movie was such to be aimed at the college crowd but after a while they decided to go with a younger demographic. They left most of the way the characters were including the engineer. Mandy Patinkin played the role perfectly.

50:49 Galaxy Quest is a comedy version of Seven Samurai (1954) which is itself a masterpiece, other movies with this theme would be A Bugs Life (1998) and Three Amigos(1986) For a fun semi comedy you might like Deep Rising (1998)

Sam Rockwell (Guy) is also in Iron Man 2 and The Green Mile among others and even won an Oscar; Tony Shaloub (Fred) has a small but great part in MIB and MIB 2 among others and had a very popular tv show called Monk. Both excellent actors.

Great reaction! You got every reference right. Tony Shalhoub didn't have much to work with in the original script. So he made Fred Kwan a stoner who always has the munchies. That made the character one of my favourites too.

There are a lot of real life parallels. Nimoy did hade a period where he resented being Spock to a degree. He wrote a book called I Am Not Spock. He got over it (it's a long story really) and wrote another book called I Am Spock. William Shatner was in a bathroom once and overheard random people trash talking him. Wil Wheaton came up with a consistent system for what the controls did just like Tommy. There's a few others, too.

Galaxy Quest and the Three Omigos have the exact same story line... Actors get a call for help from someone who thinks that they are real heroes, they show up thinking it's a job and defeat the bad guy only to learn that it's all real. So they choose to become the heroes in real life and they save the day.

I seem to remember that the dvd has a separate sound track where all the dialogue is in Thermian. Oh, and that would have been a great time for the original TOS cast to do this type of movie.

Fred was high on cannabis throughout, although scenes were cut to get a more family-friendly rating that explained that clearly. Plans were underway to make a sequel when Alan Rickman died. I believe the fireworks scene was a reference to Flight of the Navigator.

It's not really a parody, it's more of a nod to the genre and the fans.

I heard a funny comment when looking at one of these podcasts regarding this movie that the engineer, Kwan, was supposed to be Asian. Notice that he squints his eyes during the opening credits of the TV show and when he is introduced to the aliens. Another thing is that supposedly Kwan was smoking weed and that is why he was always mellow. But clips of him actually smoking weed were actually cut out.

The best parody comes from a place of deep love for the original material.

Lenard Nimoy wrote two autobiographies. The first was titled “I am not Spock” and the second was titled “I am Spock” if that gives you any idea about how he thought of the character as the years went by.

In the same parady vein, the movie 'Mystery Men' is MOL the same 'parody/tribute' to the super hero genre, Ben stiller, William H Macy, Greg Kenear, etc. Big stars, almost a stand along, cult following.

In the cinema the movie was presented in three different aspect ratios: 4:3 for the opening segment, then 16:9 for everything up until the hangar scene where Tim Allen's character first realizes he's actually in space, and then frame goes to widescreen with the opening hangar doors for the remainder of the film.

I had a chance to ask Shatner if he had seen this movie, and if so what did he think of it. He totally avoided answering the question.

13:25 and the wide shot cuts away just in time to PREVENT the question being answered Considering the layout and structural design of the ship, how was such faint grinding possible without tearing off the “wing” coming out the back… Can’t help but wonder if that was done ON PURPOSE because the writers and filmmakers knew such questions would be asked…?

This movie was fantastic. This is what I hoped "The Orville" was gonna be like...

There was talk for a while, a few years back, about making a Galaxy Quest 2, but then after Alen Rickman passed, I believe it was decided to not go forward with it.

I loved how in the end, everyone got shot except Guy. Several scenes directly refer to other shows. Rickman on the beryllium expedition goes the wrong way because was holding the device backwards, based on a mistake fans saw in Star Trek where Spock held Tricorder backwards in scene, The scene of the Commander waking with gross critter tongue on his face was from Stargate show.

They were planning GQ II, but Alan Rickman, sadly, passed. All buzz around it ended. I don't think there will be another one. Watch The Orville if you want to see more of this type of thing.

Obviously you can't replace Alan Rickman, so it would be hard to make a Galaxy Quest sequel, but they could use a new angle: what if the studios releases a sequel of the og show with a new cast ("The Next Generation" of Galaxy Quest). You could have a couple of the actors from this movie cameo in the sequel, like Sam Rockwell would be hilarious. As for the plot, you can literally just make up anything, like the Thermians return to Earth for some reason and hilarity ensues. It writes itself

I think this movie helps point out how vast the ST fandom is. The budget and craft is there because it was (as you said) a love letter from people in the industry. It’s not like a bunch of bullies made it to beat up Trek fans and steal their lunch money - this was made by people who own box sets. I remember seeing somewhere that Jonathan Frakes (Riker) saw it and immediately called Patrick Stewart and demanded he watch it too. I actually can’t stand Tim Allen - but in this one movie he makes a really good William Shatner rip off.

The closest to a real Galxy Quest series in newer times is "The Orville" which I highly recommend to you.

This is underrated comedy! I saw bits of it when I was a kid, but I managed to watch the full movie when I was older. I really loved the concept of the story; I also think it’s cool how it incorporates fan favorite moments from iconic space themed shows like Star Trek and Star Wars. Galaxy Quest is Star Trek cannon now. I'm surprised you didn't recognize Rainn Wilson though.

When you have seen both Star Wars and Star Trech and also maybe Flash Gordon and Dr. Who you'll be able to see Fanboys, Free Enterprise, Pual, Ted, race to witch mountain, ET, and a few other films and get the references. Get Ghostbusters, The Shining, Back to the Future, a few others under the belt and you can get threw Looney Toons Back in Action, Ready Player One, Be Kind rewind, Stay Tuned , Hot Shots, Epic Movie, Gremlins 2 and a few others. Also want to shout out "Flight of the Navigator"

Love this movie! It definitely is a love letter to Star Trek, and it’s such a fun time. I’m in the same boat as you, I remember this movie from my childhood but I didn’t pick up on the humor at a young age. This music is one of my favorites.

Where to begin? GREAT REACTION! Love letter, for sure. You can certainly see it now that you know Star Trek. Case in point, having seen Arena you get the second layer of the lathe line, instead of just laughing at a ridiculous out-of-place suggestion. And the bit about the Commander losing his shirt reflecting the Kirk trope. And serious actor Dane lamenting being typecast into his alien character (Leonard Nimoy's struggle). Sadly, Alan Rickman's death put a stop to their plans to make a sequel. It just wouldn't be the same...and as much as I love this movie (I think it is perfect) I have to agree. They took the production very seriously; the entire bridge set articulated to throw the actors around for real. Thus no worries about them flinging themselves in contrary directions, as sometimes happened in Star Trek. Throughout the film, Alexander Dane had his headpiece on. And Fred really was stoned, hence his mellowness and munchies. Early in the film that was established but was cut to get a more kid-friendly rating. That Peter and Fred had not seen the Thermians as they are. Oh, and they are from the Klaatu nebula - a reference to The Day The Earth Stood Still (1951, which I HIGHLY recommend). Just such a smart and lovingly made film. Tons of fun watching you have fun watching it.
