Flying is a way to get there, as is crawling over broken glass. Taking the train, dining at a table and sleeping in a bed, are a part of the experience .
I took this route 20 years ago Economy Class. It was an experience I will never forget. Police came on at one stop to take off a drunk passenger who had barfed on the floor. Great video!
Ha the same thing happened to me . This guy was drunk and walking around and peeing all over the place . His buddy said that his friend just got out of jail and needed to get celebrate freedom .
I have been taking Boat Cruises to cause the vires did take 3 really enjoyed on Royal Caribbean Now its time to see my beautiful Canada end the trip you take plane back to your city
6 Months in Ontario by the way, until now the east coast is the most beautiful part of Canada and have the most cozy people. Looking forward to visit BC one day with my wife. God bless the true north strong and free
Great video. I have travelled on "The Canadian'" 25 times since 1964 (both ways). About 2000 or so I went all the way from Vancouver to Halifax & that year they were trying out a once a week train from Halifax to Sydney,NS that included a Park car. It went to Sydney 1 day & returned the next. Discontinued after only 2 or 3 yrs as I recall. The Park cars & most of the cars on The Canadian were built in 1954 & still operate after 60+ years. BTW original artwork from the "Group of Seven" painters was hung on the wall in the bar under the dome in Park cars & they allowed smoking in the early years. I have never been on the Renasance cars.
@@GRINGOf10 All the Maritime Provinces are beautiful and east coast of N.S. especially in August and September, are amazing. Rented a house south of Lunenberg which is charming. People are great. Wonderful fresh seafood. No complaints about any of it.
@@stephenacs wow thanks for the feedback.. I'm looking at moving there to be honest.. in the future at least (next 5 years or so) .. wonder if the quality of life is good out there

Nicely done! You've hit the high points of the trip and provided great memories of my trip to Halifax taken last week (Oct 14-18, 2018) on The Ocean. Nothing much has changed since 2015, even the menu looks the same, but it was certainly a memorable journey. Thanks for posting the video.
50 years ago I took two ferries from Digby to briar Island which cost $.25 including the car. Today they cost well… they don’t cost anything they’re free. That’s the way Canada does business for the people.

I was watching this and when it started on the kids with the paper folding train..Bang it hit me.. I was on the same train ride from Toronto to Halifax when i was 3 or 4 (1974) 75 I remembered the paper train There is a picture of me standing on the seat waving bye bye out the window
+Francois Gauthier I'm Canadian and I appreciate that people like our country! The coaches are actually British coaches we bought because the British didn't need them.
Firstly, I was stating facts and presenting information. Secondly, telling another Canadian citizen that he is angry at them with cussing is not the best example of our nation.
How is he trying to bring down our nation? Like he said, he literally presenting information. Also, you're the one bringing down our country by acting like an immature sod.
Hello from New Zealand, very enjoyable, when you watch the vista's in this clip why would you want to fly? rail travel will never die, many thanks for sharing.
Went Dayniter to Halifax, return by coach. These cars were extras ordered for the London Paris train. Shells came here the coaches tested Montreal to Toronto. Then used down east, nice looking coaches.
Marvelous video. I used to take the train quite a lot between Halifax and Montreal and around the whole area as a student. The Park car lounges have incredible art work in them, commissioned by the railway by Group of 7 and other great painters.
Thank you for sharing. I grew up in Kyle of Lochalsh in Scotland and the train journey from there to Inverness is beautiful. If you ever get the chance you should have a wee looksie:0) I'd give my right arm for the chance to visit Nova Scotia though. Your videos are great for someone like myself who can't afford to leave the Highlands lol.
This routing is BEAUTIFUUUUUL .. I remember my journey in NB and NS specially arriving in Halifax town and visiting Citadel and Tatanic Museum!! Love that part of Canada!!!!
Well done ! I used to ride VIA Rail in Ontario from Toronto to the country towns. That was in '85. Also, took the train from Calgary to Vancouver in a sleeper car through the Rockies.
Wife and I toured NS with Globus Tours. As a optional addon trip, we were the only ones who took this train and toured Montreal, riding the double decker Greyline, step on, step off tour of the city. We like Canada so much we flying from NC to Vancouver to ride the Canadian (Snow Train) to Toronto after a 3 day hotel stop, I think in Banff. I love trains, and snow, so it is double fun for me. Wife does not like the cold so much so she is going mostly because I want to. Canada has a picture of the Canadian train on their $10 bill I noticed some time back.
I like this beautiful train m also working in maharaja express in india it's also luxury train it's beautiful train in the world it's running to Mumbai to delhi

I did the 27-28hr VIA Rail trip Toronto-Montreal-Halifax back in Dec 1992, the winter scenery was amazing and I hardly slept at all. Getting home sick now! I'm over due for a trip home to Halifax.

This is my next and maybe last voyage by train, done 7 times L.A. to Mtl. and one from Mtl to Vancouver, once in Australia, and now this my next dream, Love trains.
I wanted to take this ride from Halifax to Montreal and back in a sleeper just for the experience. When I tried to make reservations I was told I would have to stay overnight in Montreal as there would not be a train back to Halifax till the next day. I figured I would have to wait at the train station for a while for a train back but not stay over night. So that killed those plans!
Fantastic footage Mr Seat 61! Except the day car at the rear these Renaissance cars were originally built by BREL Derby for the projected Channel Tunnel night services from Manchester, Birmingham, Plymouth, Glasgow etc thru to Paris, Brussels etc. Sadly this project never took off as cheap flights killed off this potential market. The cars were put into storage for some time, several were cut up, and the rest sold off to VIA rail as we can see in this excellent video. The cars were a model between the BR Mark III and Mark IV design, because of their heavy weight and intercontinental voltage issues a barrier car (Ex-Mark III sleeper) was added to each rake as a generator van. but looking at the sleeper cabins and spacious car interiors this is a great shame on what we missed out here in the UK but thankful these rakes have a new life traveling along a most beautiful route.
I did Toronto to Halifax in the 1980s with a sleeper. No showers in those days. It was overnight, and the Porter woke me up at midnight to see the lights of Quebec city across the water.
We did that trip in summer 2013 and it was a great ride . Food is excellent , no comparison to the food they serve on airplane ( when you are lucky to have some ) we where most of the time in the dome or below in the bullet tail of the car . Service is excellent , VIA people were all very nice .

Excellent video, we are taking this trip in reverse in late January, starting at Halifax and ending in Vancouver, with connections at Montreal and Toronto, thanks for sharing!
Vis Really has it together. I have taken this train within Nova Scotia from the North to Halifax and another line round trip from Montreal to Quebec City.
Hey everyone i live here in halifax right beside this trains rail line and i watch it come and go often its quit a lovely train and i would say its a ride worth taking. But i had no idea about the trains amazing route in the great forests and many rivers and lakes. Although im uneasy about how the cargo trains also use the same single rail. The idea of a schedule mistake between a cargo and passanger train is scary.
Thanks for the memories, Mark. We took that trip a year earlier. We found the "Oceans" European sleepers very small compared to the Budd sleepers on "the Canadian". Train staff were very friendly and accommodating. We even got a lesson on lobster fishing from the train attendant in the Park car.
The return journey from Halifax to Montreal is also 3 times / week, leaving just after noon and arriving between 830am and 930am the following morning. The second class seats are quite comfortable, they're quite wide and rather than recline as on an airplane, when the back moves backward, the seat moves forward and a leg support extends as well, similar to a lounge chair.
Took this trip a year or o ago. The Economy Class seats are ok until you need to sleep, then they are totally dreadful. VIA used to have a good DayNighter car, but they got these things, which I am told by a Via employee were originally planned for the Chunnel, a much shorter trip. The Chunnel folks ended up with some other car, so these were 'a deal'. Apparently they were problematic for many years as they were never designed for harsh Canadian winters. So, this is what happens when you let accountants run a railroad. (or anything else).

I will be doing this trip, Halifax to Toronto, in November. I'm writing a book, and my main character is an actor who is afraid of flying, so he goes by train everywhere - even between filming locations in Canada. He is supposed to be super stressed about it, but watching this video I'm now like "hey, this is super chill" ;) I will be doing a lot of writing on board, and I just can't wait :)
I miss the days when you could stand in the vestibule between cars and open the top half of the door. I would stand there listening to the "clickity-clack" with the wind in my face, at least until the conductor made me go inside. lol The plane is for when you are in a hurry, the train is for the experience and the enjoyment.
when i was living in Toronto i rode this train a lot to campbellton NB twice year. was always hung over when it stopped in campbellton in the early morning.

Canada is an awesome country with great people. I’d move there in a heartbeat if it wasn’t so cold most of the year. We vacation there every summer. Love it.
In August of 1977 I rode the Train from Vancouver to Montreal, memorable days. I was returning to school at the University of New Hampshire after visiting my relatives in British Columbia. I had about 6 hours in Montreal and really enjoyed exploring the City. From there the bus to Concord NH and then hitch hiked the last 40 miles to Durham since there was no public transportation available. I at last get to see the remainder of the transcontinental railroad, so beautiful and filled with history. Thank You for sharing your journey. Does the train go further into Newfoundland? I met a young woman from there on the train who wrote me a couple of letters. I think that is how she was getting home. She made me realize just how vast Canada is alas too far a distance even for my heart strings.(and she was very pretty) But that was how I journeyed to New Hampshire and that flame had flickered out, C"est la Vie.
