It won’t, if they start selling well, Europe will just impose heavy import duties on them to protect their own manufacturers. They’ll do well in South America though.

It would be hard to see Europe antagonising China. The self righteous EU turns a blind eye to China's appaling human rights record and its turning of Africa into its vassal states. This is all because Europe, especially Germany exports massively to China. This includes cars and German companies build many carss in China.

We had our launch of the Dolphin on Thursday last week. Two trim levels, the 70kW power with 44.8kWh battery, a 150kW power with 60kWh battery. Several colour options both two tone and single colour with matching interiors. $38,890.00AUD(before on-road costs) for entry level and about $44k AUD for the premium spec. In 2024 we are also getting a Sport version limited edition of only 1,000 of them with sub 7 sec 0-100km/h. Deliveries coming in Sept/Oct this year. Heard the Seal sedan/saloon is coming in August(well launching in Australia) so that should be interesting as it's a Model 3 competitor. The Dolphin they priced exactly $100 less than the MG4 entry level which launched the week before(from memory) and claimed they had that price locked in a month ago, not sure I believe them too coincidental.

Wow at the price. This is the begining of the common person's ev. Very impressed. Must check headrest again. Off to showroom when it arrives to see it in the flesh again. Id3 Astra etc have no chance against this price. 15/16 kw/100 not bad. Thanks Derek. Des

The Atto 3 has what is colloquilly referred to as "dragstrip mode" in which we hold down the bottom left button on the right hand arm of the steering wheel, after a few seconds the display changes to an acceleration timer and for 60 seconds it uncorks all the power the motor, battery and controller can offer. Most owners find that their 0-62mph time drops by about half a second to about 6.8. I wonder if the Dolphin has this feature ? Nice review thanks Derek.

That's a lot of EV for the money!! also Derek, you say it's built for comfort not speed.........7.0 seconds to 100kmh was a very fast hot hatch only a few years ago and even today it would be a quick daysil repmobile!!! The more I see of BYD....the more I like. Makes me even more excited about what the Seal is going to offer when it hits our shores....later in the year.

Electric motors are fast spinning and you don't need to wait for a petrol engine to rev up to produce maximum power. Electric motors give maximum torque the moment it spins.

The Dolphin offers a comfort-oriented, Toyota-like ride, and handling characteristics to match. Not slow, but it’s “just” a family car on that regard.

In Australia the base 70kw motor/45kwh battery Dolphin is priced the same as the 51kwh MG4. In that basis I doubt you will be able to buy the 61kwh version for €27,500 in Ireland.

Interesting car. Just announced UK prices and it’s competitive with the MG4 but not exactly cheap. Still, nice to finally have a BYD with reasonable range under £30k here but I’d still go for the MG4.

You have to buy the Comfort model to get basic equipment like parking sensors? That's getting into the "not cheap" territory around £30k in UK. Demand will also keep the price elevated for a while; haven't seen a huge drop with the MG4 yet either. Plebs like me will have to wait until the first batch of PCP loans end to pick up a bargain. In the meantime, cars like the Leaf are toast; they just don't offer enough range or charging options to justify the price tag now.

the first half of brake is regen, no brake pad engaged. so the regen isn't weaker, just different design.

@@2011ppower most people dislike one pedal mode, according to a survey done in china which represent over 60% of global ev ownership. i personally hate one pedal driving. i much prefer the smooth glide over jerkey slow downs. as long as one generates same amount of energy by using the brake, i don't see the point of one pedal, other than its being a superstition inplanted by tesla.

Looks like a great option. I thought all the dolphin stuff was a bit gimmicky and tacky though... but for half sensible money they could have called it (and had it look like) the Monkfish and I'd still consider it. Great review.

Dolphin €30k price in Ireland, it will be completely sold out in Singapore. Atto was priced at US$130k even after shaving off US$15k from gov super tariffs by downgrading its motor power to lowest. BYD lowest downgraded model is selling at Porsche price in Singapore. Carrera Cabriolet $127,200 MSRP. 911 Targa $134,500 MSRP.

I advice not to buy this in Ireland because in winter this 44kw battery will hive you less than 150km range. When you buy a car it should have at least 70kw battery

Thanks for the comment, the car I reviewed was a 60kWh. The smaller battery in a lighter car should see 250km+ in my opinion as heat pump is standard too but only a real world test will tell.

MG IS Chinese. And in fact, it's a 2nd league Chinese manufacturer (SAIC) compared to BYD which is a leader in EVs and batteries both in China as well as globally.

Hmm....great review. But of an instantly forgettable car. Then again, that could be what it's all about. It goes, it's safe, it's simple, it'll keep you dry in the rain and - presumably - it'll be reliable. Don't worry if it's all a bit bland. Well it worked for Skoda when VW relaunched them, and look at them now.

In contrast, the CCP government forcibly suppresses news of critical safety failures of EVs by BYD and other makers in the country. If current review trends continue, we won't get fair and balanced reporting on those until they start failing similarly in democracies, and by then, people will have been harmed and homes and businesses will have been damaged or destroyed. To prevent this, it's on reviewers in democracies to find the videos and other reporting Chinese citizens bravely publish, at risk of state persecution, and re-publish them before the CCP censors remove them from WeChat, Sina Weibo, Youku Tudou, and so on. Irish auto buyers, for example, shouldn't have to await BYD fires in Ireland or Austalia before deciding whether to buy a BYD car: despite the CCP government's mostly successful suppression of the news, EV buyers worldwide should already have an accurate impression of brand's safety track record to date in its country of origin, just as they can readily compare the same for EVs from Ford, GM, Peugeot, Polestar, Renault, Stellantis, Telsa, and so on-all of which are headquartered in countries whose governments don't censor news of car fires or imprison people for publishing said news.
