BYD is selling those buses at an incredible discount compared to other bus manufacturers. In the US, a typical diesel 40 foot urban bus costs about $500,000. The city of Austin, Texas ordered nearly 200 electric urban buses in 2021 from Proterra and New Flyer and it paid $915,000 for the 40 foot models. I can't find BYD's prices for the US, but here is what the BYD USA website says about their buses: "The BYD electric buses are emissions-free and cost-effective, being 70% cheaper compared to conventional diesel buses. The cost per kilometer is about 0.1 US dollars for electric buses, while that of a traditional bus rises to about 0.4 US dollars per kilometer. They come with large-capacity batteries that provide a range of 250 km and take just 5 hours to be fully charged."

Indianapolis got BYD buses. Needed to install a bunch of extra charging stations. Albuquerque tried some, but also found the range to be too much shorter than advertised. Frames and brakes had problems. Albuquerque exited the contract and is happy with Protera buses. A few years ago, Los Angeles Times ran a negative article. I don't know what makes some sites happy and others fail. Guess that's why multiple brands exist.

Most buses have predictable routes with stops at a bus station at either end. You don't need a large battery because you can schedule charging at the end of the route or while the bus is stopped at the station. If you check out the average bus route in smaller cities, to travel from one end to the other is less than 50km before stopping at a station. It doesn't take long to charge a battery with a supercharger to get back the 50km. The best part is that during rush hour you can do 2 to 4 circuits of the route without charging because it is rated for 250km. Then charge the battery for longer when passenger load is lighter.
@gerryh6385
@gerryh6385 9 месяцев назад
Buses on urban routes also spend a lot of time sitting in traffic (electric vehicles don't tick over at 0mph) and benefit tremendously from regenerative braking. Diesel powered vehicles really suck for these routes along with the pollution.

I found this on line: "Diesel buses are the most common type of bus in the United States, and they cost around $550,000 per vehicle (according to a 2016 study)." It would seem the BYD buses are a bargain. How can you be astounded by the cost if you don't compare to a conventional bus. Throw in reduced fuel and maintenance cost, presumably, and the purchase of an electric bus should be a no brainer for a municipality.
@ab-tf5fl
@ab-tf5fl 9 месяцев назад
A lot of the economics will depend on whether the chargers can continue to be used after the buses reach their end of life. Ideally, you want chargers that are universally compatible, across all bus brands, far into the future. Even better would be a universal equipment, allowing bus rapid chargers to be co-located with car rapid chargers and share a common power supply. What you don't want is proprietary chargers that lock you into one particular brand of busses, using a standard that might be obsolete by the time that those buses need to be replaced.

By the end of this year all* of the city buses (the red ones) in Oslo, the capital of Norway, will be battery electric. Think (not 100% sure) all of them are byd's. The commuter buses (the green ones) are still diesel. * one exeption : they keep 3 of the old ICE buses because one of the bridges to one of the islands has some limitations that the EV-buses cant meet.

Sam, contrary to your perspective that BYD has the global e-bus market largely to itself, if you'd visited BusWorld Europe in Brussels a few months ago, you'd have seen stands from 30-40 bus OEM's hailing from Turkey, China, Europe, Korea and beyond . . it's a highly competitive space, held back only by conservative and cozy customers (transit authorities) that are taking their sweet time analyzing the revolutionary switch from diesel to electric fuel. There is a BYD bus factory here in Southern California, in the desert. That's a cheaper location as far as wages are concerned but California still has higher than average wages, so buses cost more to build. This is probably the biggest (and easiest) opportunity to transform the transportation industry, with a self-sustaining business model. Even upgrading the battery pack for more range is inexpensive compared to a consumer vehicle. The maintenance is close to zero, so money saved will go towards battery upgrades-replacement after 500,000 to 1 million miles of use. We need a follow-up video on the ROI / Total Cost of Ownership. At a first glance, this is the best use of EV technology, from a profit perspective, green planet perspective, and transportation industry perspective.

Buses are more efficient than small passenger cars. They don't need to accelerate fast, just slow and steady. Also given its predicatable routes and always return to the same charging stations, it's much easier to have barely enough battery range, therefore maximally utilize its batteries, unlike many passenger cars batteries sits idle most of the time parked, and 50% of their batteries barely get used a couple times a year. I would say building electric buses, taxis, delivery vehicles have far more impact on improving environment than passenger cars dollar for dollar.

I hope that there will be 800 km >1000 volt buses. They are building chargers for large trucks in Oslo. But, still there are a lack 1000kw. The companies are waiting for this, to save money on diesel. And, the state are hoping to sell more diesel abroad to fill up the oil fond 🙂👍

They should. But, as long as there's lack of competition in the electric bus market, manufacturers don't really have a reason to offer that. After all, if shorter ranges than the customer would like forces the customer to buy more buses to compensate, that simply means more sales for the bus manufacturer. In many cases, zero-emission mandates means that BYD isn't even competing against diesel buses. They get to simply name their price and specs, and the transit agency has no choice but to pay up. The only way this problem gets fixed is if more companies enter the electric bus business.

Diesel (or natural gas) buses aren’t cheap either. I’ve looked at some available online data and found costs generally around $250,000 at the very low end up to $600,000 per bus cited. In Prague, I found one exception to this range at 168,000 euros. So if BYD is able to match the lowest end of this price range already AND provide this range, hats off to them. I’ve previously researched the costs of electric school buses in the U.S. and found a citation for $250,000, which brought the $500M to $1B federal program to help school districts convert their bus fleets to electric into perspective.

The average urban bus travels around 130 miles per day, so huge batteries aren’t necessary (if efficiency is say 1.5 miles per km that’s less than 100KWh). Why fit a larger battery if it’s not required?
@ab-tf5fl
@ab-tf5fl 9 месяцев назад
Winter. In order to have enough range to maintain service on the coldest possible winter day, you need a battery that is way oversized for an ordinary summer day.
@leiflillandt1488

@@ab-tf5flWhy not bolt on an auxiliary battery for the coldest winter months? In a bus this would easily done.
@philiptaylor7902
@philiptaylor7902 9 месяцев назад
@@ab-tf5fl That’s true, but it’s still not going to require a ridiculously large battery. And buses do have opportunities to charge during the day (10 minutes whilst parked up at the station could add another 20 or so miles of range at 100Kw/h) I have even seen it suggested that buses would benefit from inductive charging -they could pick up a quick burst every time they stop to pick up passengers.

You aren't factoring in all the labor needed to assemble such a large vehicle. All the welders, the painters, the fabricators, electricians for the wiring. They need many more welds than an average car, many more body panels which need to be flattened and made perfectly smooth. There is a lot more WORK to putting these busses together outside of the additional cost of materials.

With a bigger battery capacity this would make a great RV motor home. Zero emissions. Diesel avg price USA right now is $4.20/gal, diesel bus mpg is 8-12 mpg with lung-destroying pollution. RV sales are dying in part because average people can't afford the diesel costs, especially retirees. BYD, where can I buy a bus? Let's start putting superchargers in trailer parks and RV campgrounds!

4.20 USD per gallon sounds very cheap! In the Nordic countries diesel prices are about 2 euro per litre which makes about 8 USD per gallon... And the net incomes aren't twice of the ones in USA...

BYD opened a bus manufacturing plant in New Market Ontario in 2013 with just one hundred employees. Today that plant employs over 700 workers. In 2019 I has the chance to talk to the city fleet manager and the maintenance manager and as them why our city was not buying electric buses. They both knew of the potential cost savings of electric buses over ICE buses but the cities executive was not willing to switch to electric buses because of EV FUD. These people drank the anti-EV Kool-Aid. That included things like the buses were too expensive, the range was too short and buses would not work in the cold.

In regards to the battery size... A LOT of power goes to "combat" air resistance and that is VERY speed dependent, buses (most do) drive in cities i.e, slow speeds. Then it is a lot of "start / Stop" and with regenerative breaking you recoup some. Would imagine if the buses were tested as cars the driving range would be less but as is, city buses, the range is good enough and I DO IMAGINE if you want a larger pack you could get it, BYD "custom build" tour buses as well.

Tesla is very much lagging big time on commercial vehicles and busses.....and these are big profit areas with little competition. They could easily have a bus division focused on central design/engineering/development, and local production with much smaller factories near end users around the world. Ship in battery packs and key electronic/suspension parts...source as much as possible locally. Tailor build models to local needs. Build assembly plants near big markets....Brazil, Mexico, Mid east, India, Turkey, Europe, US, Australia, Canada....unlimited potential in growing markets.

Smart move on BYD’s part to take on the bus market . It seems logical that the buses don’t need huge range or batteries as they are operated in cities and likely charged again at depots overnight. This is the complete opposite for Tesla semi which needed much engineering and costs to get the range it requires. So obviously buses are low lying fruit with healthy profits .

The one thing I find unusually absent from this video is the comparable price for an equivalent diesel bus, the alternative cost. From the comments below it seems the price tag of a BYD bus is still about a 50% discount to that of equivalent diesel alternatives.

Are the Sydney buses BYD? I talked to a bus driver of one the other day, apparently they just drive them all day and return to the depot at the end of the day, no recharge mid-shift. But he wasn't all that talkative, to some rando I guess. I'd actually love to know more. No one says anything about these buses Sam, I did hear the programme is 17 years behind schedule. And in the meantime the diesel buses are getting older and worse. Also I agree it is weird that if the battery is barely bigger than that in a normal car, that the bus should cost so much, and yet even so there would be no competition? What! Money to be made, where is the Australian coach builder pairing up with the battery producer and undercutting this? Another thing: if you can really drive a full size bus on a route all day and the battery is the size of a large electric SUV - would that not be THE answer to urban transportation. If true, and I don't say anything about how likely that is, but if true: great, exciting news.

maybe they calculated 90kw is relatively cheap to recharge, making a sizeable advantage over deisel refuels. 30E vs 180E for deisel. Thats a saving of 150E per shift. Assuming a shift revolves around 200km. Not hard to understand in money terms

$240k sounds very cheap for a big bus like that, I am not sure why Sam thinks that is expensive, it is massive. Amazing range for such a small battery, but likely because it is for slow urban driving, with regen braking.

I'm curious how the BYD buses handle heating in the winter, as I can see the energy requirements to keep the passenger cabin heated being quite significant due to the huge cabin area, poor thermal insulation, and doors constantly opening to let passengers on and off. In mild climates, this is probably a non-issue. But, in cold climates, I can easily envision battery buses suffering a huge range penalty in the winter, possibly to the tune of 50% or more. One potential remedy for this is to use a hybrid approach where the bus carries a tank of propane, in addition to the battery, using the battery to move the bus and the propane tank to heat it. Which still results in some fossil fuel consumption, but still far less of it than running a diesel bus. Another solution is to simply equip the bus with bigger batteries so that the winter range loss doesn't matter, but then, the batteries will be massively oversized during the summer. But, one way or another, this problem does need to be solved.
@georgepelton5645
@georgepelton5645 9 месяцев назад
It is common for electric buses to have diesel heaters, but electric heat is also an option. The latter will cut winter range, of course.

As transit busses stop regularly at specific locations by nature, they can utilize overhead and inductive charging... BYD offers both, in addition to fast charging, that could be done at lunch breaks. This reduces the need for larger batteries, even in colder climates.

Do not know how on long run the maintenance of those will be handled or when the batteries come to end of life and will need replacement. Only time will tell.

There's a reason their buses are getting poor reputation with transit agencies. Just look at Toronto. The TTC did a head-to-head long term fleet comparison between BYD, Proterra and New Flyer. Their trial after years rated New Flyer as the most reliable.
