I'm glad you asked EALO, and keeping in mind I'm not like authority on any of this but here's my take (APOLOGIZES FOR LENGTH): Sculpture specifically has a long history of being the medium the west uses to elevate / highlight figures and ideals it considers important. Example, Michelangelo's David was commissioned by Florence to say "we're a small city state surrounded by more powerful goliaths but we're the underdog so watch out" - it was made and displayed in a public space to embody the values Florence wanted to show off as its true self. So, if we apply that to statues of Confederate generals, theres a disconnect where a southern state is or town is saying (at least) "we value a person who in the eyes of the federal government was a traitor and tried to leave the union" - so as a public work, it appears to oppose the values of unity that _every state_ should stand for in the US of A. But more than that, people are upset that we'd elevate generals who fought a war fundamentally over whether states had the right to continue slavery, since a sculpture in a public space is saying "we think this person's ideas and actions are what we stand for". ALL THIS SAID, I think the ideal situation would be to move the sculptures to a museum or a space specifically dedicated to preserving a historical artifact. we shouldnt destroy them, we should remember they were built and why. They ideally should be replaced with something that embodies the values a town or state has today and TBH i appreciate that we have statues of founding fathers who were slave owners and I think it ultimately comes down to some of the intent. A statue of george washington is almost certainly meant to highlight his efforts to create a country where liberty and freedom were the rule of law (thats what we're celebrating). A sculpture of a confederate general, built after the civil war (most of which during the Jim Crow era) appears to signal to a lot of black american's that even if the south lost, they're still not welcome. TLDR I think its a complicated matter, and I think its important to morn and for states and towns to have things that celebrate their past and heritage but if its a statue it will be scrutinized for what it represents.

I wont share my spotify wrapped and will plead the 5th...but I also am disappointed that an artist i loved would say things so nasty I can't here his songs without thinking about it. IDK if there is a connection between what allows people to create art that is truly moving and do things that are truly horrible, hes not alone in that camp. But I do worry that the impulses that made him rebel against the status quo musically might be the same impulses driving him now - glad to see your comments as always :)

i know, I've been thinking about that too, whether he'd become so out of control / out of touch that he dies from suicide. I remember, eons ago, after the taylor swift debacle, he seemed genuinely embarrassed (idk if that was just PR, I thought Dark Fantasy was born out of trying to pull himself from that feeling). But my point is, if he does feel true remorse at some point i worry it will be too much.

At some point it'll all be hands on a cave, and it'll be art; still. Anonymous, and still influential. I'm saying there's no author.

oh la la, Barthes reference. I'm not sure if I read the Barthes essay you're referencing, but I kind of feel like both things are still true. There was a famous Michelangelo quote where he argued that because his work was in stone he would be remembered forever, hes probably 1/2 right. Your comment also makes me think of the book Chuck Klosterman wrote "What If We're Wrong" where he explores the idea that centuries in the future people will only remember minor touchstones of our time, in all likelihood they'll forget the names.

I think in some ways, works can speak for themselves or even take on a life of their own, like the "ownership" doesnt belong with the OG artist, but I also think that we can't try to look at works without appreciating who made them.

well dog, I had a feeling that would be the overt opinion of a lot of people who watch my videos which is kinda why I wanted to make it. While I do try to put his impact in perspective this isn't a video where I'm cheering him on, I think he's lost any credibility he once had but I think in the past a lot of people did think he was credible.
