Bypass a fuel pump relay, Ford or GM 4 & 5 pin relays

This video shows the difference between the coil (control) and the contact point which is normally open (switch). When the coil side is powered, it creates an electromagnetic field which pulls the contacts in the switch closed which allows power to flow to the fuel pump the same way flipping a light switch in your home does. When your light switch is off your contact from the source to the light is broken or OPEN. When you turn the switch on the contacts are then CLOSED or bridged across which allows power to flow and the light to shine. When you bypass the relay like I did in this video, your powering the fuel pump all the time. This can be very helpful whether your testing your fuel pump to see if you can hear it powering on or if you suspect the relay is bad. This can also tell you of your wiring, at least on the switch side is good if you don't have a voltmeter. Everyone needs a small kit with wire ends, wire strippers and spare wire in their vehicles for emergency situations. Basic tests like these can be very useful and something just about anybody can do

I've seen so many people replace starters and fuel pumps and the problem was a bad relay or wiring

Very useful info, especially in an emergency. I suppose a switch could be rigged up on the relay terminals and using the relay to hold the temp wires in, until replacing the relay. Thanks again and keep safe you and yours.

I appreciate the comment. I've had relays go bad in past and figured I'd make a video to try to help someone in a bad situation. Thank you and have a great weekend

@@singularautomotive3542 Nice of you to think of others and put it on here. I've had the same problem with the fuel relay in the past, and it maybe the same problem I have now. I'll see. Thanks again, and you and yours also have a great weekend. Cheers,

Hi again. I swapped the relay with another and there you go, all OK. Now thinking back, the car wasn't pulling as it should have. Now it seems much better. I'm thinking that the points in the relay weren't contacting all the time, therefore, the petrol wasn't continuous! So not pulling as it should have been. Thanks again.

If you have an older Ford (Crown Vic, Grand Marquis, Mustang, etc) be sure you pop your trunk, and make sure your fuel pump cutoff breaker wasn’t tripped, by pressing the fuel pump cutoff reset button Most people either don’t realize that these are there or never think to check to see if they have tripped, all it takes is the right pothole and it will trip because it thinks the car was in an accident

You're right, I've done a couple of videos about the inertia switch. I'd like to know how many people have changed their fuel pump only to find out it still doesn't turn on

@@singularautomotive3542 I remember 3 specific times, back in the early 2000s where different customers had their cars towed in, they couldn’t hear the fuel pump when the ignition was turned forward, and had no fuel pressure at the rail, so they dropped the tanks, put pumps in them….and well, we know how the story ends 🤣

Question ? according to the manual and Ford customer service , the inertia switch should be on the rear passenger side on the wall next the trunk area yet when I took off the cover marked fuel cutoff here, there appears to be nothing in there that looks like the pics I've seen in past photos ? any advice or ideas as to where else it might be ?

@@Ifnotnowthenwhen-r8s What kind of vehicle do you own? And on my Freestar you take the jack cover off which is labeled fuel cutoff as well, then it's behind a piece of foam insulation in the bottom right corner with the wiring to the tail light

@@singularautomotive3542 Thanks for answering...I've got a 99 Windstar , I did take off the panel but did not remove all the foam..If you have a similar type car and wouldn't mind sharing a pic that would be helpful in me locating where it is in that small space..again thanks for your help P.S. I'll be at it again tomorrow and fingers crossed will locate it and maybe start my car again..

Sorry I just now seen your comment. It should be in the trunk, on the passenger side. You'll have to pull back the carpet close to where the passenger side brake light is at. Let me know if you can't find it and again sorry for the late response

Shouldn't you jump 30 and 85? That's the switch inside the relay.
@johnhurtme

What about 5 pin setups, that have 87 and 87a?
@singularautomotive3542
@singularautomotive3542 2 года назад
Still the same. 85 and 86 is the coil side. When the coil is energized 30 and 87 will be jumped together and this sends 12v to your fuel pump. 30 to 87a is your normally closed, when you turn the ignition over 30 to 87a is a dead path because it is open.
