Here is a quick little tip on how to bypass the neutral safety switch on your Jeep. This is a VERY unsafe thing to do, but in a pinch it could get you off the trail and back home for a more permanent fix. Be warned, this will make your vehicle less safe and in some places could even be illegal for on-road use.

With an automatic transmission I guess they're not quite as necessary, but with a manual transmission...I've got a funny story about bypassing a neutral safety switch and a clutch switch. A friend of mine had a 99 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4 with the 5 speed manual. He installed a remote start system, and as he's always done in every vehicle he bypassed the neutral safety switch and the clutch switch. Their daughter at the time loved playing with keys, she managed to get the key fob pressed correctly and not knowing it at the time started the truck. So after Thanksgiving dinner they walked out the door to find their truck sitting on top of his father in law's car....ooops...needless to say the safety switches got hooked back up after that one LOL.

Hey, my oldest son got into my truck while I went to get his younger brother from my in-laws & when I walked out, my truck was going backwards & somehow my son turned the wheel just enough that it backed into the next door neighbors driveway before rolling back into the street. A perfect Horseshoe turn. lol, the guy walked out of his house & asked me if ''Matthew'' had a drivers license. Comical, a tad scary but also one of those priceless moments....

the 42re trans you mentioned sucks too. i had a 94 zj with a 4.0 and 42re trans, i recommend if you have one with over 200000 miles on it you just replace it with a rebuilt. i replaced gov pressure sensor and solenoid and the overdrive spring, though i had the problems licked and i think the fluid pump or the torque converter took a dump so i sold that thing for parts, i love jeeps for their 4x4 capability,but they do have issues

Well I forgot to mention that the AW4 is actually far superior to the 42re Doug and I both agree to that but for this specific problem the nss its a much easier swap in the 42re then AW4. I am sorry for all your troubles with your 42re I have been down that path before.

I had same issue 😕 I tried leaving it on neutral and chucking tires 🙃 and was alot easier 🤙

I tried to get mine off the other day and I spent 4 hours trying and the only thing that I accomplished was getting 4 stitches in my knuckle and knocking a big rust hole in my trans cooler line

NSS is probably the biggest pain in the ass ever! Fixing one is a hoax, a myth, a complete impossibility on jeeps with rust! And WHEN we break em off... They're still $150. I can't stand how important they are... Too bad they can't (shouldn't) be permanently deleted! Hang in there Barney... You'll be ok.

The hardest zip tie is the one closest to the transmission that is up in the transmission tunnel it's damn near impossible to cut but it's actually one you can take Loose by hand and is reusable

cbr, The OEM Zip-Ties are reusable & have a tab at the feed through that you press on, which allows the tie to release...

@D&E In The Garage. Eric, I was one video I was looking for since most bypass are for manual transmissions. Hey, if the Zip-Ties are oem, they're reusable & have a tab at the ''Feed Through End'' that you push on it, which allows the tie to release. I forgot about that & cut 2 of the 3 ties before I remembered. I changed my NSS yesterday, here's why. - (Michigan, Sunny, 71 degrees, November 9th) I decided not to wait because I've been down that road before & besides, my garage is packed, lol. At any rate, Is there a way to bypass like you did & leave the rest of the wires running to the NSS while it's still on the transmission, or do you have to cut all the wires off.... If you're not sure, I'll keep looking. One other thing I was wondering about, if it was possible to see where the Black w/Yellow stripe & the Black wire is, inside the plug end, could you jump it at the plug with a paperclip, (sorta like you do with the ''Low Pressure Switch'' on the A/C system), then plug the NSS cable back into it? Just wondering since I'm not sure it's safe to do without causing an electrical issue, or causing the engine to shut back off... Also, I wasn't sure if I'd be able to remove the original NSS, so I did make sure to purchased a new one ahead of time. I was able to get the old one off without breaking the plastic backing. Once I installed the new one, plugged it in & tested it, I took the old one apart, cleaned it up & just before I assembled it, I made sure that the ''Vent Tube'' was clear. The breather end is tucked into the loom, along side the wiring. I also have a 93 XJ Country. Love that Jeep, it's so simple without all the stupid electronics that can go bad, like on my 2010 Patriot that I'm gonna sell...... Thanks for posting your video. It's so cool to learn some tricks now & then......

It is a pretty good idea, but if you dont have any I guess dont worry. Water can get in if you do not and obviously cause issues

Just be careful dont start in drive or reverse because the entire vehicle will move as soon as engine turns

I dont think this happens. But i know if its faulty your reverse lights wont come on
