what if you must store the shotgun etc in a hidden location because it is illegal in the country and if almost all guns rust in the salt air environment despite extensive maintenance (even stainless)? If definitely not opposed to lethal options. I agree with what you said about analyze the situation. In our case the odds of having an armed threat against us in French Polynesia are extremely low. The main threats we face are petty and opportunistic theft, aggressive dogs, occasionally upset locals, etc. I've never heard of any cases of piracy etc though there have been some rapes (unarmed). So it would literally be illegal to shoot or to paintball or to spray anyone for doing that. Boat jacking? A real gun, every time, and clean the damn thing like a man. That’s how I operate. It’s exactly like a normal paintball gun. Normal paintball guns can shoot well above 300fps, that’s just what most fields allow. Have multiple that have chrono’d at 350-400.

yeh my tippman X7 would do 500+ with the valve full open. Ive put paint thru plywood walls at a local field once. At close range it would go thru both sides of a 5 gallon bucket filled with water

That certainly has its place but one advantage of the Mission 4 is the ability to quickly switch magazines. We keep one loaded with chemical rounds and one with kinetic so we can deploy the most effective round for the given situation. See cruisersafety.info for more info.

Here in the United States a lot of people will say get a lethal option but in practice there are a lot of people who end up serving life in prison just trying to protect themselves. This is a needed alternative but if I were byrna I would build one that is specifically for hard balls and one specifically for tear gas

Regarding the different builds for different projectiles, I can understand the benefits of that approach but I also like the option of loading a mix of kinetic and chem rounds. If you kill the unintended target, you go to prison (bullet traveling through the aggressor, to an innocent bystander). This ensures you DON'T experience option B. What good is staying alive in prison??? Jail is NEVER going to happen for an unintentional homicide, prison will happen instead.
The key word is, deterrent. Depending on the ball ammo used and I would probably use either the gas or pepper ammo, this weapon should cause the aggressor to think twice. I've played paintball going back to almost it's inception. It was initially used to mark cattle either for inoculation or something similar. Single shot pistol, spring loaded. The Tippmann reputable name in paintball has been around for decades. I'm a bit old school and like to be on the side of, pardon the pun, overkill, an over advantage. I would prefer a hard bullet round. I do realize that traveling the ocean blue, some countries may not allow that kind of weaponry. And so you come to the Tippmann as an option. Is it full auto capable? Semi? The paintballs I was familiar with were made of latex, any issues with this ball ammo being affected by salt and salt water, humidity? Great comment, thank you. You're 100% correct about the difficulty carying firearms in many of the places people like to sail. There's also, arguably, less of a need for one as very few locals have guns in many of these areas. The threats are typially more related to physical violence, edged weapons, spears, etc, all of which launchers like this can be extremely effective at deterring without many of the downsides a firearm may present (trigger hesitation, legal ramifications, emotional impacts, consequences of mistakes, etc). Additionally, most firearms do not do well in the salty environment, even if well maintained. They are also MUCH harder to train with and to obtain new ammunition than the launcher in this video. I'm a 2A supporter, and if I lived in the USA have no problem owning a firearm, but for the reasons you mentioned, and others, I choose the launcher for helping defend the boat. To answer your question regarding the balls, they are made of plastic and are (so far) unaffected by the tropical climate. The weapon is semi-auto. My Tippman tmc m4 is same thing as that byrna mission 4 at half the cost new $399 and with a $7 spring mod I’m getting over 400fps I like byrna but never would I over pay for the byrna mission 4 when I can get the Tippman TMC “M4” for $399 get more power, save $400 in my my pocket and have access to many upgrades including lock bolt to save air when I’m out of rounds I spoke to a Tippman worker they go buy new name now since byrna bought them out he said the Tippman tmc m4 is exact same as byrna mission for except for the slider wear you pop the co2 also said the Tippman tmc is all black
out of curiosity : is this the co2 version out of the box or is this their LE version? On their website their normal version allegedly only uses CO2 so I'm curious how people get it to work with hpa
It came from Byrna set up for CO2 but all you need to do is unscrew a small adapter and it accepts HPA. You'll also need a different stock if you want one. No other changes needed.
Or just get a first strike with full auto. Or if you can't find that the milsig m5 which is full auto and you can get in a box mag form or drum mag. Both you can shot at 400 fps.
Having a less lethal option, depending on the circumstances, is smart. However, good luck if the situation escalates to needing lethal force. Less lethal is childs play against a determined and/or drug fueled attacker.
I've always thought less lethal pepperball and riot ball launchers would be perfect defence options for nautical environments addendum: obviously there is no substitute for real steel spitting hot lead in a life or death situation, so ideally you'd be prepared for multiple scenarios and have a 1911 .45 and a glock 9mm hidden away yet easily accessible - just in case
The difference in power between 9mm and 45ACP is not worth complicating your life with two handguns that share no parts or ammunition. If you want multiple pistols, pick one and stick with it so you only need to stock one kind of ammunition and magazines are interchangeable. Have multiple magazines for both, not only for capacity but also because magazines are a common source of mechanical failure and they're very easy to swap out and fix the problem in a hurry. If you want different firearms to cover multiple use cases, get something that serves a completely different purpose such as a shotgun or rifle. Handguns are king for convenience of storage and carry, but long guns are objectively superior in all other aspects if you have the space for them. Consider a pistol caliber carbine using the same caliber and possibly even the same magazines as your handgun. There are carbines that break down or fold in half for easy storage and quick deployment in the limited spaces of a boat.

@@Sigmund-Fraud nah, there's nothing wrong with a 1911 if it has the caliber and capacity you're looking for. Friend of mine just got a super nice 1911 in 10mm, takes 9 and 10 round mags which is all he can buy in Washington. My point is only that you're better off simplifying your supplies in the limited space of a boat and having pretty solid reasons for mixing firearm types.

And second (pun intended) the second amendment doesn’t dictate what’s necessary. A law biding citizen has the right to use whatever firearm is necessary. If they want a handgun, a shotgun, AR15, a musket, or even a flamethrower. That’s their right, what they need may not be what you need. Nobody has the right to dictate what someone “needs” And the whole Biden (buy a shotgun) is terrible advice. It could get someone killed. Third the AR15 is not an infantry rifle. It wasn’t used in our conflicts since it’s invention in the late 50’s It is a simi automatic civilian grade rifle, styled after the M16 and mimicked through the years to the M4A1 (M4 Carbine) both of which were our main infantry rifle, both of witch are fully automatic. Granted they all share cosmetic characteristics and ammunition. But the mechanics and purpose are not the same. What if a vet that served in Afghanistan wants a home defense weapon that mimics his service rifle? To me he needs an AR15 so that his training coincides with his firearm. Maybe he’s not very proficient with “daddys shotgun” But who is? Sitting on the couch all day while that thing collects dust doesn’t help anyone but the intruders if the time came to actually use it. Stress and fear becomes a big bitch at the worst times. Somethings better than nothing. But always train and have a good game plan. When seconds count. You don’t have time to fumble. Train hard, train smart, be safe out there, the best night of your life is someone’s worst. You never know when it’s your turn.
Excellent choice that passes the scrutiny of short sighted island governments. Add a cross bow to this and it’s the next best thing compared to the real deal. If you do have items that produce “lead poisoning”- you have to declare them or take your chances by dissembling them when you clear in ( hide them)and reassemble when back at sea. But that of course can cause a lot of trouble for you if you get caught.So this guy’s suggestion is an excellent one!! The real solution is to let all cruisers legally carry firearms and that would be more or less the end of scumbags coming on your boat. Kinda of like a floating “ castle doctrine” -then if the authorities would allow this- end of story.
My question is will I go to jail if I use this in an altercation? With a conceal and carry and using a firearm to take down someone it’s almost automatic that you’re going to jail. Not to mention the lawyer fees etc.
Biggest problem? The rounds don’t always burst, let alone if you hit the water. I think it’s a great idea but for someone stealing your pole, not for hijacking your boat.
What are the legalities regarding this thing in the state of California? That looks like something that if the police saw you carrying that around you're getting arrested.
I hope the ammunition is a different size from paintballs because you know someone will try switching the ammo in between the byrnas and paintball guns.
65fps above the max allowed velocity for paintball guns… It makes more of a difference than you might imagine but I guess that’s subjective. Anyway, with chemical rounds if you go higher you begin risking the rounds exploding in the weapon so I think this launcher found a good sweet spot for hard hitting kinetic deterrence and effective deployment of chemical rounds. If you’re only going to use it for kinetic rounds then maybe it’s a different story. In my opinion it depends on the situation but I get your point.
It helps a lot but doesn’t fully stop slow leaking from, I assume, where the tank attaches. But it does allow the tank to remain attached for long periods of time with the internal mechanism unpressurized.

It can shoot Steel ball bearing ls with a ceramic coating and many other projectiles that are for sale online it would definitely stop someone if you shoot em in the neck or head

I agree. I was at the range yesterday training with proper ARs and noticed how similar they were in terms of weight, movement, etc to the Byrna. Almost identical, just different recoil and noise obviously, but otherwise more or less the same.
I'm all for less lethal options but I will prefer my Sig. I get that it has it's uses but as a home owner, wouldn't be using less lethal. Might be a good tool for police and riot control.

But in the time we've been there we were personally boarded late night by a man with a speargun, a man started masturbating from a nearby canoe while Nicole was working on deck then threatened me with a speargun when I told him to stop, a man was beaten on Mo'orea by a pack of teenagers just for 'fun', multiple cruisers were bitten by aggressive dogs, a woman cruiser was punched on Huahine just for being a cruiser, I can go on and on. If having (and knowing how to use) a launcher like this can provide a level of effective defense if it's needed then we think it is a valuable item, even if the chance of needing it is relatively slim. Kind of similar to having a liferaft in that regard, only this is much less expensive and easier to stow. It's our liferaft for self-defense. And sometimes it's fun to shoot targets. Come try it anytime!

@@explorewithsvzwerfcat We agree that the overwhelming majority of the locals are incredibly friendly and that in general FP is safer than many (most?) other places we've been. Our point is that the risk that does exist can typically be mitigated by some preventative measures and, if necessary, deploying the launcher we show in this video. So that's what we choose to do. :) To answer your question, the boarding and masturbating were on Mo'orea, as was the mob violence against the man. The dogs were on multiple islands and atolls. The woman being punched (and other assaults I did not mention) were in Huahine and Raiatea. Then, of course, there was the man murdered and possibly eaten on Nuku Hiva, but that was a unique situation.

This is pretty much for people who live in places where it’s illegal to have guns. If you pull this on an armed attacker you’d better have an escape plan. Imagine hitting someone who has a real gun with a fake gun. Sounds like a quick way to get shot.
There's a video where the reviewer is shooting the Byrna LE pistol (which actually has a higher fps than this rifle) with kinetic rounds at coconuts and they blow holes in it. Would you want to get hit in the face with that? It would incapacitate ANYONE. The difference is, there's a chance you could end up in jail if you shoot someone with a traditional firearm (e.g., 9mm) and a court finds you weren't facing a mortal threat and using lethal force was unjustified.
This is just sad actually I was thinking that might be a cool option for my wife then the fps with a rubber ball made me think well no that’s just gonna piss off who or what ever she shoots it at and put her more at risk of harm
