I've been carrying a Byrna Hi Viz model which was designed for Police, Security, and Military. I've had it for the past year and spent dozens of hours practicing with it to the point that I can hit a 2 inch target at 20ft with all 5 rounds no problem. My son has one as well because he was taken hostage last November by an armed drunk guy on the commuter train he was riding home from school on when we lived in California. You can buy the kinetic rounds which are much more effective for stopping aggressors instead of using Pepperballs which can get you in trouble for discharging of a chemical weapon in a public venue. The Byrna is legal in California except in San Francisco because San Francisco passed a local law that stops people from owning it because it was hurting the criminals who were trying to rob people and the DAs didn't like that. The Pepperballs have always been illegal for civilians unless youve taken the Chemical Certification Exam, but Governor Newsom changed the rules last Spring so civilians can no longer take the Chemical Certification Exam through Byrna and the BSIS anymore. He only wants Police, Military, and Criminals to have access to Pepperball ammo now. The Kinetic rounds travel at over 210 mph which will really really hurt when they hit, I know because I got accidentally shot in the ribs by someone. Anyone who carries a firearm should carry a LTL launcher if nothing else so they don't have to deal with the legal issue that come with discharging a firearm if some nut tries something stupid. I currently have a 16 shot 40 Joules shottie on the way for home protection so I dont have to use my 9mm if I can avoid it.

The kinetic rounds are very reasonable. They are only $49.00 for 95 of them. They are reusable if you don't fire them into a very hard surface, like a concrete wall or a steel target.

Byrna runs sale promotions often so you won't need to wait long to get 25% off and free shipping. Had mine (orange) a year now. Super accurate in no time, so fun to practice with reusable rounds. Remember to always keep an UNpunctured CO2 cartridge in it so you are 100% ready to protect yourself and loved ones.

How many shots can you get in on 1 co2 cartrdge? And how long can you leave that punctured co2 cartridge in the byrna, or does it all have to be used up at one time?
@kp2874
@kp2874 9 дней назад
@@HK-uj9qc about 20 shots on one CO2 cartridge. You will only ever want to keep a new, unpunctured one in your launcher if it is sitting unused and loaded for any amount of time. You will not want to rely on a partially used cartridge to be effective over time because it will leak. An unpunctured cartridge will not leak and the first shot squeezed off the trigger punctures it so the launcher is effective for each magazine. Cartridges and eco rounds are inexpensive enough to take out for target practice and shoot until the cartridge is depleted. Always wear safety glasses when changing cartridges.

This guy is great. I hope he's in some role in which he's teaching/instructing people - he's an excellent speaker, a skill that's surprisingly rare in a country full of native speakers. He just made my short list of greatest communicators in America - people who are clear articulators who aren't just making sounds with their mouths, but actually communicating the ideas in the heads in a way that nothing is lost in translation. People might be curious who else I consider on this list - Greg Hartley, former Army interrogator, host of the Behavior Panel. And the other person Luke Thomas (MMA journalist).

He is a straight forward and honest business owner who wants to help as many people as possible to attain their CCW in California, not such a simple thing to do. I also own a Byrna in international signal orange. I want it clear to any law enforcement officers that I am not holding a lethal firearm. Good work Joel...keep up the updates. I am a subscriber.

I’m considering one of these since SB2 passed in CA on January 1, 2024, and my CCW is near worthless. The LE version hits much harder, and is CA legal for non LE civilians; it is going to be available mid January. The downside is quick deployment because of the size; it’s close to the size of a full sized service weapon.

Here the thing about the ammo. It is reusable. How many times do you think you'll actually need them. For target practice, one bottle is fine. Buy or make a trap to recover your practice rounds. They also have two specific target rounds for sale. One is reusable, the other disperses and is safe for environment in a powder burst on impact. So, having the 20 rounds that come with the gun + 1 bottle of 95 practice rounds, are going to go a long ways to save you a ton of money. You will need the new c02 cartridges, though.
@PDSClasses

One point of clarification: The pepper balls are not reusable. Only the polymer balls are reusable.

I got one of these for my truck. After a few weeks, I took it out to show a friend but when I tried to fire it I found out the gas had leaked enough that I could not fire it. The paperwork does mention that there is some leakage but does not give timelines/expectations. I have put it in my bedroom as non-lethal option and have the magazine out/ready to twist the co2 cartridge but my first option will be lethal if there is no time. I bought a new unit from Big5 for $80 that activates the cartridge by slamming the bottom on a surface so I know it will be ready whenever I need it. I have looked at a few of these "Review" videos but NONE talk about this issue.
@PDSClasses
@PDSClasses 29 дней назад
Apparently, you did not buy a Byrna. The Byrna costs about $400. The Byrna does not puncture the CO2 cartridge until you fire the first shot. Thus, there is zero leakage.
@shawny5338
@shawny5338 29 дней назад
@@PDSClasses that’s correct. My second unit is not Byrna. I couldn’t recall the brand/model but it normally sells for around $120 at Big5 and I got it on sale. The leakage problem solved but, Byrna has detachable magazines which the cheaper model does not. I was hoping that someone had a third party option for Byrna? Or maybe one of these companies could do better research and have a better solution?

I appreciate your review. I understand also your choice of color as non lethal. My concern is that a potential attacker(s) may see this as a toy and will not be deterred by appearance alone forcing you to have to discharge the launcher. If it was the colors of traditional firearms that potential attacker might be deterred by appearance alone and discharging it may not become necessary. Not that I am by any means endorsing brandishing the launcher. Having it a non lethal color may also stop law enforcement from making an error that you are holding a live weapon if they happen upon the scene, however with all the cerecoating options that people can have done on firearms making them look like toy guns that may not be of any advantage. I am looking at a less then lethal carry option because of all the legal ramifications of discharging a live firearm in a self defense scenario. The good guy with a gun is looked upon as bad as the bad guy with a gun today. I am also wanting to have this to carry when traveling as some states will not honor or reciprocate on CCP's issued in other states.

I live in Florida where most of the California issues don't exist. I have 6 firearms and a rifle. There's one additional reason for a civilian to have a Byrna. I'm 75 years old and live in a retirement area. Short of being robbed at gunpoint, most issues that I'm likely to face don't call for lethal force, yet I might need an equalizer. The Byrna is great for those situations. People may be shot with a firearm and not know it immediately. But if their eyes and throat are burning and they're coughing and choking, they can't help but notice and discontinue whatever they're doing.

I have a Byrna LE (orange, of course, I would rather not have my less-lethal look like a gun) and it has an advertised accuracy distance of 80 feet. That outreaches pepper spray in keychain, pocket and law enforcement sizes and probably has more reach than the riot control tear gas and bear spray cannisters. I tested the kinetic projectiles at 10 yards on standard falling plates and at 20 yards on paper targets for accuracy. I was able to achieve 100% hits on 8-inch bullseyes. The 8" steel plates did not fall when hit. No wonder--about 12 foot pounds muzzle energy! Also, of five rounds fired at the plate rack, all bounded back and hit me, one bouncing off my safety glasses. Perhaps I'm better off with a pocket full of golf balls! Still, the ability to put pepper balls on target at 25 yards is better than having nothing at all. The Byrna LE takes the larger 12 gram CO2 cartridges and the two magazines provided in the kit hold seven rounds each. Accuracy is superior to throwing golf balls. I have a combination aiming laser and light module and a holster. It should be effective as a distraction and might deter--but like using pepper spray, hosing down an enemy is for breaking contact and opening up an escape route. It might drive off a dog or smaller mammals.

I own a Byrna launcher and since I have not had a need to use it for years it just sits in an optimal place. My concern was the shelf life of the projectiles since they were so expensive... This was their reply... "Optimal shelf life for the chemical projectiles is around 18 months from the delivery date. The chemicals remain potent for much longer than this, however the chemical cloud may not disperse as well which can reduce the effectiveness of the projectiles after 18 months. " ... Does anyone have any real life experiences with this?

Criminals get their guns illegally. It's not your job to protect yourself, that's why the police exist. Owning a gun is a precautionary measure. The reason why your gun needs to be licensed and registered, so law enforcement can separate you from the criminals who posses loose fire arms. People don't need to wake up, you just need to inform yourself, of your state's gun ordnance and regulation laws.

Yes. As long as you hit the upper chest or in the face I've shot one of these the pepper ball rises and spreads out and looks for an air opening. Face. mouth. Nose. i bought my gun . I made the mistake firing one of the pepper balls for target practice. It almost knocked me out. Basically if you use the pepper balls they will be choking on their own air. They will get their breath after a while. It will not kill anybody. They also have nerve gas balls mixed with pepper spray. So my advice is to buy one of these guns. You get a kit for 325 d Includes the gun. 10 pepper balls. 2 air. Capsules. 10 practice balls. 10 white hard balls. Also two clips. The company also sells tear gas spray which is only $20. I was really impressed with this company.

UR correct: expensive launcher AND ammo. The launcher is bulky; I suppose because of the 0.68 caliber balls it has to fire. I think that's the same caliber as standard pain ball gun. I hope Byrna will have some competition in the ammo realm to reduce prices. BTW, there may be "generic" 0.68 caliber ball ammo that works and is cheaper. I shirk from carrying mine because it's far too big for my pockets, including jacket pockets. I think a belly pack is the answer; Byrna does sell what looks like a backpack, but will one really have time to remove it AND grab the "gun" before it's too late??

If one of those pepper rounds exploded in the chamber from the burst of the cartridge... are there odds of that happening? If so what are those odds and are they more or less than a squid's odds? If there is any chance of that I would not get one.

@@jhkindt968 it’s very possible for a pepper ball to break in the barrel. That would NOT likely cause a squib load. But if it burst in the barrel, that’s one less ball you have and it’s also going to affect you because it’s so close to you. Every pepper ball and paintball guns operate alike, in that they’re operated with a bolt of some sort that hits the ball to create pressure to force it out the barrel, breakages happen with $2,000 paintball guns, so it is likely that this $400 pepper gun can and will at some point break a ball or two. Further more, I just wouldn’t trust it. If a bad guy is running toward you and you shoot him with this pepper ball launcher, the ball will break upon impact as it is designed to do, but because your attacker is moving toward you, the “cloud” of pepper fog will just move past him. Honestly, this is all just marketing to get $400 from people by fear mongering them. A $10 can of pepper spray is far more reliable. Or, of course a firearm can be a good tool as well.

The CO2 cartridge is not punctured until you fire the first shot. Until you fire that first shot, the cartridge can stay in the gun indefinitely without leaking.

With mine, I can shoot both magazines and then reload and fire them again with no loss of power. I think about 30 rounds would be pushing it. If you mean how long will the co2 cartridge last if you fire it once and then set it down , the manual says it will take about 36 hours for it to completely leak out.

Question: Should I load 5 pepper ball spray units or maybe have a kinetic round first in the chamber to stun the attacker then 4 pepper balls? I'm wondering if the force of a kinetic round is more painful ON IMPACT than the pepper ball ones? Thoughts anyone?
@southbirdsouthbird
@southbirdsouthbird 2 месяца назад
I've had three Byrnas. (One for me, one for my wife, one stoIen out of my stupidly unlocked car.) Great functionality, but in my opinion too big and clunky. They could make it smaller and slimmer. . . I have the new 7-round magazine in my LE with a laser sight. Very intimidating to the perp. Very accurate. Very powerful. I load the first 4 (top) as kinetic rounds. Those are very hard and painful and should deter any bad guy, especially with shots to the chest, neck or face. (Saw a video where a homeowner dozing on his couch shot a 6'6", 300 lb. drunken intruder just once in the knee and put him on the ground until police arrived.) Keep in mind that if you are in a stressful self-defense situation your instinct is going to be shoot everything quickly. If somebody is crazy enough to keep coming after those 4 painful rounds then the rest of my magazine are pepper balls. I've tested them (inadvertently - I was down wind of my outdoor target) and they are completely, instantaneously disabling. . . Keep in mind that Byrna itself is now warning that the pepper ball rounds in the 7-round magazine could fracture from the extra pressure of that magazine. You don't want that stuff in your face or your house. So my advice is to save the pepper balls as a last resort, whether you use the 5- or 7-round magazine.

How long would a co2 cartridge be effective when left in the gun? It would seem that it would lose effectiveness over a short period of time, so you would have to load a new cartridge every time you go out, that is a lot of waste and money on cartridges you won't use
@tjrl339

Once "opened / pierced" the CO2 cartridge will only be useable for a couple of days. HOWEVER if you have an unopened cartridge in the weapon, it will stay ready for use almost indefinitely. This is covered on the Byrna website, the first trigger operation pierces the CO2 cartridge, so you always have your weapon ready for instant use.

And after you hit them with the "non-leather pellet" a week later the next thing you will hear is a lawyer knocking at your door with a "lawsuit" form the person that you injured while he/she was trying to kill you with a "real" gun. Sometimes it better to have only one side of a story, yours against the dead person.

Just got rid of my hand guns due to the stress of possibly using one. In 2020, I took a CCW course here in FL and the instructor gave us a gun law book that's two inches thick. All I need to do is make the wrong move or decision in self defense..I'm in jail. There are so many variables that one must do in case of an situation. For me, it's not worth it. So I decided to look into a less lethal device. If anyone out there has doubts about owning an actual firearm, there is a reason. Check out different alternatives like this and free your mind of "Grey area Gun Laws". Because if you make the wrong decision and kill someone, you can't go back in time. Your Done.

@PDSClasses
@PDSClasses 5 месяцев назад
In order for the taser to work as described, both probes have to hit and connect to the body. They also have to be at least 4 inches apart when they hit. If not, then it only causes pain. This is why criminals learn to wave their arms in an attempt to break the wires connecting the launcher to the probes. If they break one of the very thin wires, NMI (neuromuscular incapacitation) does not occur.

@TheMMSpirit
@TheMMSpirit 3 месяца назад
Don't buy anything like this for her. A pepper spray canister keychain is good. If your wife has no intention of shooting regularly to learn a semi, buy her an easy to use and care for revolver. Face it, women in particular and even many men who haven't the training aren't going to be able to rack the slide in an emergency, clear a jam, change magazines, or anything of the sort. A revolver can sit in her dresser drawer or purse for a hundred years and still shoot. A semi can't do that, the magazine will likely wear out. A revolver has a very heavy trigger - this is super important for safety. Never lighten your trigger save for some competition gun or something. You don't want your trigger to catch on your shirt or love handles and shoot yourself or others. Many people pull out their gun in the car, and try to holster it again afterwards and shoot themselves. You won't notice the trigger in an emergency at all. A revolver takes no training to shoot- aim and fire. It is instinctive. If it doesn't shoot, pull the trigger again. That simple. Nothing can go wrong. I own semis and revolvers, but my wife is little, and will lack the awareness to handle a semi, even if I could get her interest in it. Thus, a revolver bedside gun. For carrying, a ruger LCR, smith 642, or even Taurus models are very well made for concealed carry and are perfect for pocket carry. You can't pocket carry and get a good grip on a semi to draw that as easily as a revolver, in my experience. Easy to wear, as long as you wear pants with a pocket. Or a coat pocket in the winter. Reliability first, then speed of use. The first person who gets a round on target wins the fight, I've heard it said. It is also super important that the gun be light enough that you don't mind carrying it, otherwise you'll leave it at home. For me, I pocket carry a smith 642 or LCR, or belt carry a G43. (replaced the G26 previously) Super light, carry and forget. Never lower caliber than 9mm, you need stopping power. Shield, Hellcat, G43, G26, CZ P10 s/m are all super reliable subcompacts. Avoid the sig - the 320's for the military literally fell to pieces, and the p365 used to have strikers that broke. Reliability first! Cheers

@TheMMSpirit
@TheMMSpirit 3 месяца назад
@@andrewbrumagen3479 Please don't waste your money on any pocket pistols. They are just plain garbage and are unreliable. Those calibers are weak and don't have enough stopping power to entrust your life to. .380 is a shorter 9mm, sure, but more than 10% weaker. You want something to stop the threat, now. 32 caliber is even worse. I owned an LCP for a time, failure to feed every few shots, and that even after my complaints to the manufacturer who put a new slide and barrel on it. I don't trust that caliber, or pocket pistols AT ALL Sounds like you want your wife to carry something, but small. A taurus revolver can sit in her purse for decades and still fire. Cheap and light. They're fine. Get her a pretty little blue or green one in ultralight, she'll love it. Weighs less than a pound, no different than the pocket guns you're talking about. If she's like my wife, she'll keep it in her dresser drawer anyhow. Then you still don't lose, she'll have something she can use even if panicked and you're not home. 38 special is a good caliber, and I use hornady rounds in mine. Not +P either, never use them in a subcompact. No need to hurt my hands, no need to put extra stress on my gun. Same with my 9mm. I use +P on full sized steel guns, like a ruger GP 100. It can handle the stress. I've been shooting over 40 years now, and bought, traded in, and tried a variety of guns. Every one I still own is carefully considered, and has a purpose. Good luck!
