RIP Byther Smith who was born in 1932 and passed on 9/9/21 after a long career in Chicago on Delmark, Bullseye, Fedora, and Black and Tan records. He was an incredibly intense performer and a real deal bluesman in every way. I was fortunate enough to see him several times, often at The Tip On Inn in Blue Island, IL. Musicians, promoters, fans: please share your Byther Smith stories and memories in the comments.
In this lesson I talk about "Money Tree", "Tell Me How You Like It" and a bit of "Live On and Sing The Blues". I love Bythers concise, hard-boiled, intense guitar playing. It's great for beginners to learn what licks are effective where, because Smitty's lines are very simple but always placed in a canny spot for maximum impact.
