BYU Electroshock Documentary | Gay Conversion Therapy Program

Originally produced by Gentile Pictures in 1996, this documentary, titled: Legacies, features the personal stories of four men who were subjected to vomit, electrocution, and visual therapies at Brigham Young University.
Under the direction of BYU President, Dallin H. Oaks and other BYU administrators, the therapies were designed to rid BYU students of their homosexuality.
To date there is no evidence or personal accounts that acknowledge the conversion therapy programs were successful. Contrarily, victims of this abuse have experienced physical and emotional damage. Some even took their lives as a result of the therapy.

And no one was arrested for this drug, electrical shock anti-gay treatment? Sounds like something the Taliban would do. Someone who suffered through this “treatment” should sue the Mormon church. How could people who profess the love of Christ attempt these tortures against their fellow creation? The Mormon church should and needs to be held accountable.

If you’re LGBTQ at byu or in the church, you’re not alone. The leaders don’t want you in the church or the community, but you deserve a place where you are known and loved for who you are. There are people who will accept you for who you are. There is nothing wrong with you.

I was put through put through electronic shock therapy. It was horrific. It did prove medically I am gay and was born gay. I went through 13 years of reparative therapy that did enormous damage. Imagine how I felt when I learned homosexuality was declassified as an illness 50 years ago in 2022. That period covered the entire 13 years. Masturbation is not mentioned in scripture anywhere. Its fine. I was a Baptist Pastor but I was told I was not welcome to even attend church. I sure wish I had known that as a teenager. I live in Queenland Australia and the electronic shock therapy was conducted in Sydney Australia. I can't watch this any longer. Its too horrific.

Growing up Mormon and even living in the BYU dorms for about 2 years, I can't say how much this disgusts me. Wow. I attended sex "addiction" programs up there for masturbating about once every three months or so trying to get on a mission (dodged a bullet there), but this is just insanity. Had no idea this ever took place. Disgusting.

I was an ex Hare Krishna because I don’t believe in that god nor do I believe that I will or can be reincarnated to an animal. Did you know they can’t smoke or drink coffee or tea either and that gays and all the lgbtq are not accepted either It’s more than Latter Day Saint. I drink coffee and make my errors but I hope you find what your looking for. I have no idea how you can turn away with all the knowledge you have I want to turn my back and I can’t lol nothing else will ever ever make sense about the plan or why we are here or what happens after… but wishing you all the best on your journey! It was in 1976 and 1977 while Dallin H. Oaks was president of BYU. Oaks has denied on record that the practice was conducted during his tenure, but claims it was discontinued before he became president.

Could have been me. Back in the late 70's I had all the paperwork organized, acceptance, finances lined up. Just couldn't do it. Now I know why, the Spirit at some level warned me not to go, I would have been electrocuted as well. On the other hand, a dear friend that has since passed was threatened and blackmailed to inform his parents or to take the therapy at BYU, years later he still had severe burn scars on his body. I DO NOT care that folks say this was done in ignorance to help others. The therapy was evil, clandestine, essentially a secret combination that led to many suicides, impotence, horrible scarring. And to date, LDS, Inc. still largely denies this and offers no apologies for the damage done. Eleven years ago I quit the church to be a whole integrated gay man. Thinking I was honorable and safe I left to find happiness and peace. Instead, LDS, Inc. has come after me and my kind with an absolute hatred and vengeance to prevent rights or even take away existing rights. Is this the way of Christ's church? Hell no, Mormons do not really believe and practice their own doctrines to leave everyone to their own. The church and leaders are frauds and con men, not much better than Trump.

The problem with this whole situation is NOT the technology or failure there of..the problem is the belief system which utilizes whatever system to accomplish testing the technology. New ideas of advancement are never wrong. It's how they are studied, implemented, and used. All these subjects volunteered to be case studies for this experiment. THIS is the tragedy!!! What Jew in 1940, Germany, would not have volunteered to sign up for experiments which changed their hair and eye color? Insidiousness at it's purest form...

I absolutely love The Lord and His Kingdom, but this is a dark stain on those men in authority who professed to love Jesus yet were pompously flaunting their high status in the club and who didn't care one bit for their brethren over whom they held power. It is clear that those "therapists" didn't care for their brethren or for the harm those moronic yet pernicious procedures caused.

@alyssaweyland8562

the LDS church tends to see women as non sexual beings. This is something I’ve heard from my parents and multiple bishops. That’s part of why the idea of a gay man marrying a straight women isn’t seen as a problem- the sexual nature of the woman is non existent. They just kind of forget that women can be attracted to women also.

These "treatments" were going on all over the country at this time, not just within the LDS Church....just to put it in perspective. No, it wasn't right but it happened. But if singling out the LDS Church to further your hate and to help you feel good, justified, happy, then go for it.

Why single out BYU? Because they are the only one I know of that denies and downplayed that it actually happened. They strive to be something better, and rather than make restitution for past sins, BYU covers it's sins, gratifies it's pride.

Yes, how can we expect the LDS church to be better than any other institute that was performing these atrocious experiments, often while exploiting and threatening to tell parents or kick the “volunteers” out of school if they didn’t participate?! I mean, it’s not like they claim to have a man who speaks directly to God or anything. 😏
@GWatt-eo9ix
@GWatt-eo9ix 2 года назад
I’m puzzled by what you say, indeed troubled. That everybody did it is not an excuse, for the LDS Church claims it is not like every other church: it is an exceptional religion, the one true church with leaders who have divine powers of discernment. Behind the BYU treatments was President Kimball’s denunciation of homosexuality as evil, of the devil, foul and corrupt. We should hate what was done, and the lack of discernment in the leaders who claim to be modern prophets of God. This is nothing to be “happy” about.
