Just a quick FYI, despite the great jokes (and they are funny), no tithing money will ever be used to support BYU athletics. BYU boosters came up with the money to hire Young. Ryan Smith (Utah Jazz owner) is widely thought to have put up at least some of the $$. We're ecstatic about this hire.

I’ve been BYU fan all my life. I never thought this day were ever happened. BYU never spend that much money on head coach. I’m glad this happened whoever make this happen grateful and I’m happy fan.

Be nice. Mark Pope served BYU very well and made their program better than it was before. No one should blame him for taking his "dream job".

@@outsideview9052 No the last coach did that with taking BYU to the sweet 16 plus mutable mountain west titles.Pope has done nothing for BYU the whole 5 years and UK will find this out soon enough.

@@TheTinfoilmanlive It is hard to compare Mountain West Conference titles with competing against Gonzaga every year. Coach Pope has been part of some of the biggest wins in BYU history. I just think it is best to thank him for all he did and move on. As for BYU, I am concerned that this move to the "corporate" or "professional" level will backfire on them. I dont see coach Young having the passion and excitement for recruiting and student involvment that college ball needs. Coach Burgess would likely have been better at that. That is kind of proven to be true by BYU still trying to get him to be the assistent head coach. They know Coach Youngs weaknesses. In any case, lets let Pope go and move on. I am quite curious to see how the BYU players in the Portal will react.

Not one penny of tithing dollars funds any part of the athletic department at byu. The lds church requires that the athletic department at BYU be self sustaining which is why they haven't paid their coaches market value in the past. The affiliation with the big 12 is the only reason Kevin Young is getting a paycheck.

That might sound funny but you guys should know that Tithing donations to the LDS Church are "not" used to support athletic programs. Heck, even BYU is not paying this new coaches salary. I am sure that is mostly coming from Danny Ainge and Mr Smith (owner of the Utah Jazz and new NHL team he is buying; Arizona Coyotes). This sounds great but NBA coaches usually dont do well in college backetball. Lets hope this one does work.

As a lifelong BYU fan and a student there in the late 70s, I was upset when Pope was hired by Kentucky, and I only wish him and his family the mostest bestest, but I wasn't upset too long with Young as the head coach. 🎉🎉🎉

Well, those fans have heard so much about how evil it is to use money of the Lord to be used for support such a secular thing like the athletics department at BYU. That's very similar to another complaint about how much older BYU athletes are and their evil advantage because of two year missions. Well, if it's such a huge advantage, then why aren't other university encouraging their athletes do something similar and why aren't they heavily recruiting these former missionary. Those two complaints are just crock of bovine offal.
