I'm retired Air Force. Although I didn't fly I certainly know these planes well. The C-17 is a fine aircraft. Light years ahead of what it replaced the C-141 Star Lifter. But if you need to move heaven and earth you need the C-5 Galaxy to do it. It's been flying over 50 years and still going strong.
Both are very good transport planes but a C-5 Galaxy has its opening in the front whereas, C-17 Globemaster III have it in back so C-17 Globemaster III can be used by paratroopers, this is very important feature which the C-5 Galaxy lacks!
THE C5 opens from both front and back, your essentially able to drive straight through the aircraft.. It's also lowers its fuselage to make loading and unloading cargo etc easier. C5 is old and C17 is new, both are spectacular aircraft
Both would win. The C5 is used to move the most/heaviest goods the farthest to a place with a long runway. The C17 is designed to carry a tank such as a Leopard 2A7 and bring it close to the fighting area with a short runway. The C5 can carry 270 troops, while the C17 can carry102 paratroopers. So the C5 can bring those troops to an area where those troops can be brought to the front lines.. The C17 could technically allow them to drop anywhere, even behind enemy lines. Both are awesome, yet different. If the C5 could do it all, the US wouldnt use the C17. Same vice versa.
I feel the Galaxy is such a so much more capable plane, I do not understand why they didn't just improve upon the design and add more required features (like a paratrooper door for instance) and more efficient high bypass turbofans for even better performance. With two GE90s that thing would be even more powerfull, a lot lighter, have more range, even shorter takeoff, would make it an unbeatable aircraft in my opinion.
Flew alot of equipment and byrd expecdition to wright pat., several hundred dead corpse from byrd, frozen in ice, the plane, the C5,was used. Flew very good.
This is an apples or oranges comparison. And just by me viewing and commenting on this is giving this "creator" a penny is obscenely overrated. The C5 is over twice the size of the C17. They both perform their function perfectly. But you would not put a C5 in to replace a C17 nor vice versa. This is a BS video that needs to be taken down and the poster removed from youtube.
I think putting two realistic military aircrafts up to fight against each other is pretty unfair. The C-5M is literally twice the size of the C-17 so it's most likely going to win. C-17's are faster, but that's not gonna matter much in this because the C-5M Super Galaxy is still fast as well.🇺🇲🩶
Why are the dimensions given in metrics. Were as the united states still primarily standard measurements? I hate taking time trying to convert. Metric may be easier but my brain still in standard. My milk is gallon, gas gallons hwy signs miles per hour, penis size inches.????? Wait a minute let me do the math....carry 2. Add the 3, multiply...hey wait a minute might be something to this metric system😬
