did you ever think to follow your wife's advise and actually have the camera show what you are doing? Would be nice to see what you are doing instead of the side of the transmission. Duh.
Ouestion...I've got an 1987 F150 with 56,000 original miles that won't go into 3rd gear....reverse 1st and 2nd shifts great I've changed the output speed and ABS sensors already...the thing sat parked for about 8 years at one point, any sugestions what might be the culprit? Thanks.
I actually like your video.inly thing you could do different is let viewers know what you are doing.like removing the 4 governor bolts.there wouldn't be long silent spaces and would idintfy parts to newbe.i couldn't finish someone else's vid because 1/2 way he had covered converter and how clean the fluid looked then skipped over valve body
Have 1973 F-250 2WD with C6, 390ci engine. Trans had 1, 2 and 3 but no reverse up until a week ago. Shifted great from 1st to reverse several times but lost both 3rd and reverse. Any ideas? Drives great in 1st and 2nd. Good power to rear wheels. I might pull trans and try rebuild before shelling out big $ for rebuilt. Your thoughts?
Robert, My 95 F250 has the C6. It does what I call "The Phantom Shift" I have to let up on the accelerator to allow it to shift out of 1st. All else seems fine. I've been told the governor should be replaced. Your thoughts? Also, is the E40D a beefier trans? Due to the twin I beam, I've acquired a Dana 60, and now Im thinking taking the borg transfer case, drive shafts, trans cooler and the E40D.
I bought a 70 ford Ranger with a c6 transmission. The truck has sat for 20 years. ALL foreward gears work great, but NO reverse? Tries to lunge foreward in reverse and neutral. Any suggestions?
The lunge toward in reverse and neutral sounds like possible forward clutches are burnt and stuck together I would pull the pan to see the fluid condition and if metal or clutch fiber is in the pan if so take it apart
Question I always see the front pump comes out last for some reason I'm trying to get my front pump out it's very hard what's holding it I have the bolts out
Give it a try.i did my first one when I was 14 had never been inside one and didn't even really totally understand how it worked.rebuilding mine educated me more on how they work.that also opened door to get mechanics job where I advanced to assistant manager.owner was manager.i was given half of what I made the shop.this included parts sales or commissions on anything.only suggestion I suggest is always with no exception replace converter when you rebuild trans.i didn't once even though advised.turns out that was problem in first place.one thing that helps is have space you can lay stuff out as you remove them in the order you took them out.then you can take the sub assemblies and do them then I put punch in vise and hang case on punch using bell housing bolt hole so trans is tail down and work your way up.before you put valve body on you can air test
My very first automatic transmission rebuild, a C-6, and I had a torrington left over. I finally realized that because I built it from two different transmissions and one torrington was destroyed along with the low reverse section in that transmission that mathematically I should have had one left over. My end play was perfect so I guess I got it right. Thank you.
hey robert,i put new bushings in my c6 frt. pump..but when i pulled it the frt clutch drum pull forward a bit. so when i tried to put the pump back in it wouldnt seat all the way and frt small shaft wouldnt turn. the trans is still in the truck with the engine removed. can i realign the clutch pack and push it back ? or does the trans have to come out ? thanks
+ron shuman it will be hard to get the clutches back in place it would be a lot easier with the trans out of the truck but I would have to try before I pulled it out
I assembly them by putting punch in vise and then hanging case by bell housing bolt hole so tail is down.this prevents packs from slipping out of place.simply work your way up and air test before valve body is put on
If it is still in the car put it in manual 2nd if you have engine breaking then servo and band is working if it is out of the transmission do a good visual inspection the rubber should be soft and seal to the case
Robert, my 89 Bronco C6 is on its last leg. I am relatively mechanically inclined (I do all maintenance on my vehicles) would I be in over my head attempting to rebuild an AT such as this?
Doomzdayxx if you are mechanically inclined as you said then it would be a good first transmission just take it slow and lay everything out stay organized and clean
I was 14 when I did my first with no knowlage of how they worked or what to do.i say go for it.always replace converter on rebuild or you will regret it someday.i use punch in vise sticking up through bell housing bolt hole to hold case tail down to do assembly and lay everything out as it comes out in order it comes out.then I start at front and rebuild sub assemblies such as clutch packs.i didn't have press so i used all thread and two pieces of thick flat steel with metal exhost donut cut in half to compress the clutch pack springs to remove clip to get to seals on piston.one is down in the back of case but short flat steel and exhost donut cut in half placed on top of steel piece that holds springs.you could use nuts standing up.you just half to compress the metal piece enough to remove keeper ring then loosen nut an all thread to relax springs.air test before you put valve body on
