One of my favorite species. Think I've got 7 of them right now. Their care is so easy that I gave a juvenile to one of my friends for her birthday, who never even thought of keeping a spider as a pet. (I did ask first) 2 years later, and it's a fat, healthy, gorgeous, confirmed female. She tells me how she loooves her spooder and is always talking to her(lol the weirdo) and admiring her webbing. It's SO rewarding to bring a friend into the hobby and see them start to really appreciate how amazing spiders are 🥰

The GBB is a sub adult & I'm so excited lol i can't believe she splurged so much money on me, I'm used to getting a box of chocolates if anything! They'll be here on the 14th & she wants to help set up the enclosures with me, i think my interests may be rubbing off on her which is a big thing, considering this is the same girl that used to scream for dad at the 1st sight of a spider in the house😂

LOVE my GBB. Had a little over a year, super fast grower and crazy easy to care for. Mine is really laid back and has yet to show any stress. Got it at maybe 1" dls at a convention, now about 13 months or so later it's around 4" and about to be rehoused in its final enclosure. As for the semi arboreal argument, I usually explain that they live in a lot of desert like scrub land, so climbing into small shrubs is in their nature. Not a tree dweller, a shrub dweller lol

Hello Tom, I hope you and your family are doing well. A very nice video you're sharing about the Chromatopelma cyaneopubescens. I especially like how succinctly the spider's behavior is described, particularly regarding the space they need and their preference for shrub habitats. I find that aspect very important. As you mentioned, it's similar to Pterinochilus murinus - they are relaxed when the environment, in this case, the terrarium and setup, is well chosen. Tom, I finally got a Eucratoscelus pachypus! I'm so happy. Ever since I saw it in your video, it has been at the top of the list of species I'd like to care for. Thanks to LOVEFORTARANTULAS from Belgium, I now have a wonderful female. Perhaps I'll be lucky and find a male for breeding at some point. Wishing you a great week, and stay healthy! Greetings, Chris

I like your content Tom What's not to love about a GBB?? My wife's stupid cat knocked over my GBB enclosure this week 🤬. The Herpcult enclosure was destroyed, but somehow the spider appears unharmed and has been eating well. I did find rehousing my GBB to be tricky, it is not defensive, but it is nervous and bolts quickly. It took a little time before I could wrangle it up in a catch cup. I've been a keeper on and off over the years, but I have always kept "beginners", so I am not used to the speed Keep the informative content coming

I can absolutely relate to your tip at 13:19 . I rehoused my ~0.75-1inch GBB from a 4" tall enclosure to an 8" tall enclosure and the decrease in defensive behaviors was night and day.
@calliew311
@calliew311 6 месяцев назад
Wow, yours was defensive even that small? I must have a super chill one. She was in a 4x4 cube until she was an inch, maybe 1.25 inches. She has always been slow and dainty, for lack of a better word. However, I did move her into a Tarantula Cribs medium switch, so she could web high and be truly semi arboreal, and she is less dainty, and actually jumps when I put meal worms through the air holes. She catches them mid air, lol. I hope she never gets defensive, she is a bit skittish, since her last molt, but she is still pretty dainty, lol, except when she leaps for food. Haha.
@ryangreen9378
@ryangreen9378 6 месяцев назад
@@calliew311 Their feeding response truly is an incredible sight. I chalk my GBB's previously defensive behaviors up to the fact that he loved to web up the lid of the enclosure (in the 4" enclosure), so every time I would go to feed him I would be ripping up at least some of the webbing and he was left out in the open (completely my fault). Since moving my GBB to the 8" enclosure, also from Tarantula Cribs (because how can you not use your best enclosure on this species), he has been a total sweetheart (except around food as you mentioned).

Hey Tom & Billie, my GBB was my first "real" rehousing as she was a good 4" and rapidly outgrowing her home, and I say "real" meaning I was actually going to cup her instead of the old "put small enclosure into large enclosure and let them move in by themselves" gag. As it was my first real rehousing and the whole "they can be skittish and FAST", I was dreading it. But... what a little darling. Thanks to your videos, I was calm and slow with my movements, and she was an utter sweetheart. She wasn't entirely OK with what was happening, she kicked a little hair, but overall, she was calm and docile. LOVE this species.

Love GBB´s! My girl has always been a bit carefull, almost meak at points. I see videos all the time of peoples GBB´s rushing out and hitting their prey like trucks, being spunky and showing some attitude or even kicking hair. Mine has only kicked once, she gets scared and kicks crickets away with her front legs if they are to big (she is adult btw) and she doesent touch worms at all. The relativley small abdomens and long pre-molt periods whilst being lethargic worried me a lot in the beginning but you get used to it in time. She was one of my nine first tarantulas i ever got ( got nine at the same time when i turned 30) and will always have a special place in my heart. On a sad note, i just lost my G pulchripes to impaction. She had been doing great for several years now. Always got super big booty and then went in to 5-6 months pre-molt periods. This time around she didint get as large booty as she usualy did and the pre-molt period had been almost 11 months. Last week i found her in a death curl and i couldent save her. I just couldent figure out what i did wrong since i always do my research and follow the consensus care guidelines for my animals. Today i was going to clean her and her cage out and when i lifted her body she kind of "popped". I am now pretty sure it was impaction since there was a lot of poop coming out. No signs from the outside.

Hey Tom & Billie 🥰 Thanks for yet another great upload! 🤟 I've been keeping mine in 12x12x18" (30x30x45cm) exoterra with mesh on top since they were about 2" or 2" 1/2. I gave them a long, curved piece of bark in the back, they did just like an arboreal (webbed themselves a cosy chamber at the back). 😅 I was giving them a lot of moisture back then, now I keep them on the drier side. I still give the substrate a good soak once in a while (every few months) to maintain the plants and the clean up crew alive (isopods & compost worms). The mesh top allows for enough evaporation anyway (no condensation as you'd get with a full-bodied top). They're about to mature (over 4" 1/2 big now), after 1 1/2 years in these enclosures, so it clearly proves the "keep them 100% terrestrial" concept wrong. Quite laid back for GBBs, never flicked a hair either. ;-) On hindsight, I guess a 12x12x12" terrarium would've been more than enough for them, though. If I get some arboreals next year, I might move the GBBs to this size of an enclosure. Would probably be more visually appealing, too, since the empty 6" are useless for a GBB. Cheers guys! Hope Santa is getting you all great presents haha 😜 -Thomas

Hey Tom! Took me a while to get around to this one; work has been nuts- everyone and their mother (literally) has mice (I'm sure Billie can understand...) Wonderful video as always, that rehouse was *chef's kiss* perfect. I'm a D. dia fan myself, I know you just mentioned this in your podcast regarding them and the GBB, but I have a reason! I started the hobby with 3x each of GBB, OBT, and C. versi. All 9 were males. All. 9. No I wasn't ripped off, they were 3/4" slings and the vendor is one of my friends and she and her husband do not have the time to sex those under a microscope just to make me miserable. I just had terrible luck. I raised all 9 to adulthood and sent the C. versis and GBBs off to breed. No one needed the OBTs so 2 died while I was looking for someone to take them and the third I finally found someone to take him. I later got an additional GBB from a friend who matured out literally 2 days after receiving him. Yay. This has left a very bad taste in my mouth for this species. All 4 were psychos. It's honestly starting to irritate me when people give my favourite genera- Lampropelma, Phormingochilus, and Omothymus- grief for being "crazy" like, bruh, have you ever met a MM GBB? But yes, the 4 males, especially with 3 of them being my first EVER tarantulas, really ruined the species. I MUCH prefer the D. diamantinensis, sadly I struggle MASSIVELY with this species, I have never lost so many specimens of one species before, so I've given up owning a spider with this colouration since I clearly can't keep D. dia alive (frankly I'm too embarrassed to order ANOTHER from my vendor cause he's going to start asking questions) and I have zero interest in raising another male GBB. Furthermore, as you mentioned, the "semi-arboreal" thing is somehow wildly misconstrued by new keepers in the groups. I know you touched on this in your podcast regarding GBBs as semi arboreal, but WOW it is so, so bad. You ever look at something and have to sit back, close your eyes, and take a deep breath? I really, really, REALLY struggle to understand why people hear "semi-arboreal" and set something up FULLY arboreal. Someone posted a picture of a 1 inch GBB sling in a giant Exoterra with 1 inch of sub, some pointy skull, and a leaf or something. The GBB was all the way at the top over pointy wood and bone pieces. I just can't anymore. I'm Mrs. Nice all day at my job; I deal with stupidity that borders on criminal on a daily basis and I just can't come home and be Mrs. Nice on the groups where constructive criticism is disallowed because people are too sensitive. I'm polite but if someone is doing something wrong I will point it out, POLITELY, and effectively (I've listened to your podcasts regarding unsolicited advice and similar topics at least 20 times each.) Honestly, I'm going back to Arachnoboards. The Facebook groups censor you to the point of not even being able to give advice and that's frankly a massive waste of my time. BACK to the GBBs, the mix of the 4 males, the unnecessary kicky behaviour and skittishness, and the semi-arboreal thing and general idiocy on the groups regarding this species in particular, the GBB has to be one of my LEAST favourite spiders sadly. They are absolutely beautiful but I have negative interest in ever owning one again, so I'm glad you have them so, again, I can vicariously appreciate their stunning beauty through your videos. Sorry to be overly negative, it's a very rough time of year at my job as we are still playing catch up with overdue services and I'm pulling 65 hours a week. Hope you and your family have a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year! - Charlotte Edit: I want to reiterate that the reason I bring up the high-strung behaviour is not that it's a turn off or overwhelming or unmanageable, but it really grinds my gears when people say very negative things about species and genera I love (the aforementioned Asian arboreals) and then sing about what wonderful beginners GBBs are. I have to stand up for my favourite genera, lol. Second edit: On rereading this, I feel bad for being so negative. You're sort of spider therapy for me; my boyfriend isn't super interested in listening to me talk for hours on end about spiders which is valid and my hobby friends are great but don't always have super articulate responses to what I say, they just agree and move on. I really appreciate you taking the time to reply to my comments and being a safe space for me; this hobby saved my life and I have very strong opinions about it but I ADORE my spiders and I would not still be walking this earth without them, and without you, as you were the first resource I found and have continued to be amazing and helpful throughout my journey. Your podcasts are helping MASSIVELY with my seasonal depression (on top of my chronic depression; I'm miserable all the time but I'm even more miserable in the winter, yay!) and they allow me to stay positive when the world seems- and literally is- so dark. Thank you Tom, keep up the awesome work.

I concur with the 12x12x12 enclosure for housing. My adult female lives in one and does very well in it. I’ve never had a bolt or any hair kicking from her and I’ve had her for 4 years. I keep my female h pulchripes in a repti zoo 12x12x12 set up the same way as my gbb and she’s always been a sweetie too. Just because they are a tarantula doesn’t mean we shouldn’t give them options, they are not all the same 😊

Thanks Tom, another brilliant video. Probably my favourite T the colour together with feeding response is truly amazing. As for premoult ive had one skip a sling skip single feed and a few days later it had moulted and was feeding again definitely a highly recommend speices once the keeper gives them respect they deserve. The hairs aren't too bad either in the event you do get haired.

I’m really really thinking about getting a T. The two at top of my list is the GBB and the C versicolor. Also thinking of a Chaco Golden knee. Thanks for the video!
@TomsBigSpiders
@TomsBigSpiders 2 месяца назад
Two great choices (they were my third and fourth tarantulas). The GBB is definitely more forgiving than the C. versicolor. The Chaco is one of my favorite species of all time. If you go that route, try to find one 1" or more, as it will grow more quickly. Thanks!

@@TomsBigSpiders just got home w two new slings. Alas the only pet store within about an hour that I’d trust to get a T from didn’t have a C versicolor and the owners daughter just got their last G pulchripes two weeks ago! They had a sub adult male GBB and about an inch+ sling but it had literally just molted - so we didn’t even want to to disturb the lil one They had a couple really nice looking A. avicularia and about a 1 3/4 inch B smithii. Both very fairly priced so I did get an arboreal and terrestrial new world after all. And he gave me a deal to boot since I also had to buy some other supplies for a leopard gecko enclosure I’m working on. Told them I’d stop by next week (ish) to check the GBB tho the price was a bit high. Super excited about these two. Tonight is a deep dive into specific care. 👍

Tom I've now got a ggb and I keep it just like a common pink toe. One of the local pet store I normally go to my feeders for my turantulas. I bought three others with it. The one I have is definitely that same color right now. I love the feeding response it has. The one I've is a b. Minimax and wonder if you can do a care and husbandry video because there's nothing about that. Love the videos that you produce.

New to the gbb and have noticed the males seem to get their full abdomen color sooner than the females that stay striped until they are bigger. My male is barely 2 inches and already lost all stripes. Mainly just an observation, but curious if this is with all and not just from what I have witnessed?
