I personally think the rufilata is the most stunning pokie of all, their unique green colour would blend perfectly in a jungle environment. Sadly not ready for one of these yet, yours looks massive Tom!
I only have a P. metallica juvenile. She is fast, but not defensive or overly bolty. When I have people look at my collection, she is always the one I start with. Absolutely gorgeous. If you take precautions, learn to identify their behaviors, and treat them with respect, I honestly find them way easier to keep than a lot of other old worlds I am looking into grabbing a ruffilata and smithi soon from my local breeder.
Just found your channel and instantly subscribed I wish I found your channel earlier. I also keep Ts and few true spider species but mainly keep and breed reptiles specializing in big lizards like monitors. I also film my critters just to share knowledge and make great friends all around the world. I’ve been keeping and breeding reptiles for over 30years and spiders about 20years now. I wish I started filming years ago but just started. Luckily I’ve worked with a few different breeders and pet stores so I’ve been lucky to work with a lot of different animals and critters of all kinds. My main focus is sharing the knowledge I’ve learned and share these amazing critters with everyone to help inspire the next generation. But anyway these are my favorite group of tarantula species and unfortunately do catch a bad rap but in my opinion they are some of the best tarantulas to keep because of their hardyness and beauty but definitely should not be for beginners.

Gorgeous genus, I’ve had a few Poecies. Been bitten twice, absolute agony, worst pain I’ve ever experienced. There is no pain killer that can stop the pain. Don’t get bit.
All of them are gorgeous (great job taking the footage!), but my heart definitely goes to P. metallica and P. regalis. These colour patterns are just unreal. The latter would actually deserve the 'ghost ornamental' moniker. Thanks so much for the great work! 🙌

Dear Tom, I saw my first Poecilotheria when I went to buy my Eresus walckenaeri, Lily. I may or maynot have had an internal panic attack and almost spun around and walked right back out. Fast forward six months, and every time I go to get more crickets and spiders, I spend a lot of time staring in absolute awe at the Poecilotheria Metallicas and ornatas. My spider dealer showed me how calm his specimens are while feeding them and changing their water dish. I treat my Dolichothele diamantinensis the same way I treat my Acanthoscurria geniculata, ie with a lot of hands off care and respect. So I'm not particularly worried about slipping up and getting bit. Although I will always keep the possibility in the back of my mind. I've been absolutely smitten by the pokies I've seen at the spider shop and I've stared at them for so long my spider dealer offered to let me buy the adult specimen that's actually not for sale lol. But I live in a two roomed apartment in Tokyo, I can't in good conscience buy an animal I can't provide adequate living space for. My Acanthoscurria geniculata already has dibs on the space I do have. I will get an ornata (or some other pokies!) one day! When I finally get a place of my own or of I ever return to India lol. This is a little unrelated to this video in particular, but I wanted to share regardless. Seven's struggles have also absolutely inspired me in my personal life as well, watching her fight to live despite all the horrible misfortune she endured made me seriously question my own will power and made me realise if I let the pressure of my job and personal problems take me out, a tarantula has beaten me in terms of sheer willpower! So out of spite I've decided to live on and keep fighting. I can't thank your channel, and especially Seven for in some ways saving my life. Was that too much information? Possibly. Hi, Mausami Rai! They really are normally very shy and calm spiders. Sure, the potential for a nasty bite is there, and when startled, they can really MOVE, but good rehousing and care techniques should really prevent that type of behavior. And good for you for recognizing that you have to have the space for them when they are adults. Many folks will buy a bunch of slings and then scramble to find room for the adults. And that is absolutely amazing to hear. I DO hope that things are looking better ahead. Believe me, you are not the first person to express these these types of feelings. Tom your absolutely right about the P. Metallica being a stingy eater after a molt. My P. Metallica sling molted about 3 weeks ago and I have had a hard time getting it to eat. I'll put prey in there and find it there the following day. I remove the prey item and usually try again every 5-7 days. But it is a little frustrating when you want it to be a fast grower and you know it won't be. Still a beautiful spider.
Great video Tom. I have females 3 in my collection - regalis and rufilata juvies are around 4 to 5 inches and my smithi is around 2.5. My rufilata is out almost all the time and is very photogenic. I love how all 3 of these spiders hunt when i throw crickets into their enclosures. Alot more entertaining than pure ambush predators.
This is a great video. i am one of those who are too nervous to keep these, but I am always amazed at how beautiful they are. Maybe I will be brave in the future!
So happy to see this video, I'm receiving my very first pokie this upcoming week, a P. regalis. I chose this species specifically because of the price point, in Canada they're about $40 or so for a 1.5" sling. I have lots of experience with Tapies and Psalmopoeus, but it was the experience I got rearing my OBTs that gave me the most confidence to look at Pokies. My OBTs are so chill, and I've never had a threat posture from any of them as I provide them tons of hiding places and respect their privacy. I'm really looking forward to having a pokie!!

I have heard from so many T keepers that Poci's are very mean and are bitey. But you always say they are not as mean as some say. I think you are an excellent keeper. Please do remember to tell those who have not yet kept T's or been bitten, some folks like me are very allergic to bee venom and will be allergic to spider venom. Whenever I get a little spider bite I react badly to it. I get a huge red bump, itching and burning. So I cannot keep any old world. I am sticking with my dog who is cuter than anything. Hi Billie. I'm not lying to you, Joyce! In fact, this seems to be a US thing, as they are MUCH more popular overseas. I thought I read that tarantula venom had something with the proteins that makes it so that they don't cause allergic reactions. I'll have to search for that paper, as I remember reading something about it. And I love my dogs so much, so there is nothing wrong with that. haha Billie says "hi" back!

Hi, Elaine! I've never really needed to do that. Most are on shelves that black out the back naturally. They also tend to take residence inside the cork bark or behind it, so it hasn't been an issue. Mine are quite calm and fairly visible during the day, so they appear to be okay with it. Thank you so much!

Wish us luck. 1 striata - juvie 1 vitatta - male 1 rufilata - mature female 1 tigrinawesseli - pretty sure female, but I will see next molt And 1 metallica - sling... Very picky like you described yours. Out of them all, I love my rufilata and regalis the most. The rufilata jump started me back into tarantulas after almost 10 years away from them (had a regalis back then too). I cannot wait to have the opportunity to breed the tigrinawesseli, vitatta, regalis and the ornata... But since this will be my first attempt and the ornata is an MM, he has to go first and then I will see if breeding is my "thing". Wow, what a great video. I have a P. Regalis and P. Ornamental. I have never experienced a problem with them, however I am always respectful as to how I manage them. I am cautious and observant of their mood and movements. I have twelve of the more colorful tarantulas in the hobby, because I think they are so beautiful and not fossorial. I love pokies! They're my favorite genus. I covert twenty dollar 10 gallons into arboreal enclosures for mine. Your right they love having two hides. I started offering all my Ts two hides. I think most terrestrials like it too.
@@sneakysquidgaming916 I dont have any that big yet but think it would When a 10 gal is used vertically it provides a lot of room for arboreals. You can buy a conversion kit from Etsy or make your own. I haven’t converted a 20 gallon yet but I think if I had an arboreal that large I might.
For me it's the metallica , i just love how they look , getting a sling on tuesday, looking forward to gaining more experience as the little one grows, got a small bio active set up for it already prepared so hoping all goes well, i've watched alot of guides on these guys so all should be good, thank you for adding another source for me to refer to :)
Loved the video, thank you for the keeping tips. I recently got few slings from Poecilotheria genus and they are so amazing. I actually had incident with one while feeding it, but it was all caused by me, I stressed the sling out and it bolted out of the enclosure. Fortunately I was prepared for that and everything was fine. I learned from that and I won't ever do the same mistake. Other than that I had no issue with them so far, they all eat well, they are usually shy and calm. I really love them and I am looking forward to watch them grow.

Whew ! Lots of stunners here ! For the time being, I have no intention of getting any. In 10, 15 years from now, who knows ? So much can change over the years. Regalis would be my #1 pick because of it being the "Classic Pokie" and I have to say that I really like the look of subfusca, so that would be another one to consider. Hey Tom, awesome video! I've kept regalis x3, metallica x3, and subfusca lowland. My regalis and metallica all matured out male and I sent them off to breed, and after 6 males I FINALLY got a female subfusca LL, and she is absolutely stunning. She's very photosensitive but an absolute sweetheart and I'm so so so excited to finally have a female! I was pretty much ready to give up lol. Quick question for Billie: my friend works at an exotics store with a giant invert section. They have a rat problem and the rats are unfortunately bringing in rat mites, which are getting onto the store rats. I'm in pest control myself and suggested the obvious rodent control solutions (they already have poison bait, glueboards, and snap traps) and vacuuming regularly as well as deep cleaning the rat enclosures. Her boss wants to spray something and I told them that was a big no-no and pretty much anything they spray they would have to remove all the animals beforehand. Their vet gave them an ivermectin spray that helped in the past but they are just completely overrun with the rat mites. Does Billie have any suggestions? Thanks! I just ordered one p rufalta and one gooty sapphire to add to my collection I love the pokes I also have two trinidad Chevron's that I love they are both very active they also grow very fast they are definitely one of my favorite species. Hi Tom, finally got to catch up on your podcast on the pokies. I’ve only been keeping about a year. When I started researching Ts I decided my most wanted was the C versicolor, T Seladonia, and P Metallica. Due to size Seladonia was out. So I got the Versicolor as my first T. I’ve been keeping Ts about a year and recently got my first pokies, metallica, rufilata and regalis. They are all slings. Long story but the regalis didn’t make it, but the other two are doing really well. I had ZERO problems getting them to walk from the packing vial to their enclosures. The rufialata made a web curtain on the back of their half round cork bark. The metallica eats like a beast and out quite often. I plan on getting another regalis and more pokies in the future. They really are amazing spiders

I've only been keeping for a year and half. I still haven't gotten a pokie. I think I will take your advice and start with one of the smaller ones. They are truly stunning spiders and I want to keep them. I've become so much more confident withy keeping. I've rehoused several psalmopoeus species and my OBT with no issue so I think a pokie is a perfect addition to my collection! This video was so informative. Thank you so much.
I had a young regalis that passed during a molt, and I absolutely loved the way she looked! I plan to get another one and a metallica after my vacation in the spring.
Thanks for the poking blow out,all mine have been easy to rehouse and deal with.if nine get disturbed they run back behind there cork bark.they are very shy,and I've never had a threat pose from either of nine.i currently have a p Metallica,p ruffilata,p miranda,p regalis and a p fasciata,who is a female.ive had all mine from slings,they are all about 6" apart from my p miranda who has grown very slowly.i would say for people who are afraid to get one don't be just go get one and you will be rewarded with a stunning species. P. Metallica is my favorite pokie. I have one that's doing fine currently in a mainstays container. I also have a P. Tigrinawesseli which is actually one of the shyest, but more chill t's I own. I love them both.
Hi i have got a Tiger Ornamental Tarantula (Poecilotheria Tigrinawesseli) seen it out twice and never seen it take crickets. Raised from a sling 2 years ago and now about 3 1/2 inch. Thanks for all the great information.
I have had more pokie escapes than any other species I have kept. Found my P. miranda just cruising in a corner of my living room early one morning. My 5" P. rufilata took off during a cleaning and flew up and out of the container, down the shelf, across the living room, up one wall, down the other, and finally under my entertainment center. My striata leapt out when I dropped a cricket in. I highly recommend keeping them, when you feel you are ready. You won't regret it.
Awesome video Tom a real treat. This genus boggles my mind. My fav is P metallica as I love all blue spiders but vittata regalis tigrina wesselli striatta rufiliata are so close behind. One of the reasons I havent jumped into the hobby is Im overwhelmed with which to start with.As with my snake collection many years ago,I was into developing relationships with my stuff rather than being a zoo keeper. I was sure I would start with maybe 4 Ts first. Ok....great. But how do you choose which Pokies let alone Brackies,Grammas,and Xenethesis? Saints preserve us.

Rufilata and regalis are my favorite Pokie's but I'm definitely not feeling ready for one. I'm a keeper for two years now and will wait at least another three or four years before buying one. I have an M. balfouri commune though (9 juvies, 14 months old now (7 females, 2 males) and rehoused them a while ago into their final enclosure. Pleasantly surprised how chill they are. I love them to bits. 🥰
Great Footage of this gorgeous Genius. It's so sad that they got such bad reputation, wich is unjustified for the most part. I've kept P.regalis and P.rufilata in the Past and had never recieved Aggression from them, not even during a Rehouse they've just clinged stubbornly to their Corkbark. Wich can sometimes be useful. If this demonizing will go on they might be getting extinguished pretty soon, except a few Species who may be able to adopt to a poorer Environment. Anyway...did Your old P.metallica show some bluegreen Iridescence on the Femurs? If so...even more Beauty.

Hi Mr. Tom! I have to credit you for my own Pokie madness. I now have six species and am totally in love with them! I have a curious thing going on right now. My P Fasciata matured out into a big male, but I haven't had any luck finding him a breeding age mate here in CO yet. The funny thing is that he has taken to coming out at night and is drumming like mad on his enclosure on the side facing my Regalis female right next to him. He's gets full on body quivers going to match the crazy loud clicking. The lady in question will pop out the top of her hide to take a look, and quickly retreat. I keep telling him he's not her type. LOL! Not that I would EVER attempt a hybrid, but that started me questioning... can they cross breed? Do they in the wild? I've not found any information at all on it. I know snakes of closely related species will in transitional zones, like bulls and gophers or kings and milks, but I've not read a thing about T's doing it. Do you have any info? Also, do you need a a Fasciata male or a Vittata male? I'm having no luck finding breedable females for either, and both molted out mature in the last four months or so. I'd hate to see them go to waste of no breeding oppty's..

I have a P regalis that recently reached about 6" and has been nothing but a sweetheart that loves to sit on it's corkbark. I think it's a male but love him all the same. I'm dying to get a P rufilita! But I currently have shelving unit of mainly juvenile tarantulas so space is at a premium for the moment lol great video Tom!

that bit of advice about crushing the dubia's head for feeding arboreals is helpful. I struggle to get my Avic avic to eat. She seems to strike it and let it go even though she has tiny abdomen. My struggles with my Avic are why I haven't yet picked up a Poecilotheria, I wonder if I wouldn't enjoy keeping one. However, once I get my Avic to start thriving again hopefully, I'll look into getting my first Poeci. My favorite is P. regalis but I love the ones with purple too.
Hey, Madeline! Yeah, before I started doing that, I used to find them still alive months later. They are great at burrowing or playing dead. Avics can be a little picky. Have you tried other prey items?

Something that needs to be said is the incredible sexual dimorphism pokies have. Specially the P. Regalis. When my male matured and completely changed its look from a beautiful black and white to an ugly ass hairy brown it truly was a shocked. Still love him dearly but it’s a striking difference. My P. Metallica was my 4th T and it was a little daunting at first but there’s so much resources online now that I felt pretty comfy dealing with rehouses.

Hi Tom, I have a dilemma With my P.mettalica.... She molted on 20th September this year and sometime after i upgraded her into a large tub. Today is 19th October and she STILL is refusing food. So she ate last on 20th September which is 1month ago. Any ideas what's going on Tom ? James 👌 🕷
i just got a P metallica resently she is 3" and i rehoused her into a pretty exoterra nano tall. she will out grow it but i have caribeana versicolours that will use them. She was a dream to rehouse being my second old worl (OBT was my first) she got out when i was feeding and they are fast. she was just curious and staying calm easily returned to her home without much effort. She is almost always on display rarely hiding. I adore her and will get a regalis since i adore the black and white! My OBT is also always out and never given me a threat pose. She has a small home with a hide and will get very happy when i open the lid expecting food. amazing spider to watch feed!! I dont think either the pokies or the OBT deserve their reputation just stay calm and move slowly.

I have to try my hand at the OBT before I get one of these. The regalis is the one I really really want!!! I need to get used to a faster spider so I picked the OBT. Why? A vibrant orange spider, darker substrate, darker bark, and darker plants! The orange should pop when and if it is out! Hoping it doesn't do the poop cannon thing.... looking at you versicolor.... Yes! The regalis would be the highlight of my collection! I love the stunning contrasts from the white, black, and grays! Even on muted out older species that yellow still pops! I lost my itch for blue spiders once I saw my favorite spider the Caribena versicolor. The regalis is my second btw. When my T albo male passes I will have room for a regalis. 1 to 2 years, 3 if he is hearty! He is still eating for me. Fed him 3 large crickets the other day. I was amazed as he only takes one once a month or so. Anyways keep up the good work as always. Loving the podcast review at the beginning btw. I am going to have to dig around and find that link to the site were I can comment on it. Those almost 1 hour podcasts.... chef's kiss! It makes my Mondays mornings at work enjoyable!
I absolutely LOVE my regalis...the tones are just so striking. I DO like the blue spiders, but I'm not as crazy about them as some folks are. I think that I've just come to respect all colors. hahaha Sorry that the one this week was a bit shorter! Hope all is well, Dusty!
